Welcome! My name is Jface and I'm a TTRPG & Board Game enthusiast. I'm in the midst of creating my own game, and as I go through the process i'm exploring what makes other games work so well. We are analyzing mechanics, and the math behind it as well as the general feel. If you are also building a game then come along for the ride!

I've been playing Dragonbane since the BETA rules were released and I really love the system. It's really interesting to hear a first impression of the rules from a game design perspective. There were a few points that, having played the game, I noticed weren't quite correct, so I thought it might be useful to mention them. When you’re rolling your attributes you can put each roll into any attribute, you're just supposed to decide which attribute to put a roll into before making the next roll. It’s not that you have to put the first roll into STR, the second into AGL etc. like in OSR. (Also, the rules say you can use any system you like to generate your attributes, as long as everyone agrees.) The fifth attribute is Willpower, not Wisdom. The number of Willpower Points you start off with is the same as your Willpower attribute. It might be a bit misleading to describe professions as classes, because the only mechanical effect they have is determining 6 of the trained skills (out of 8-12) your character starts off with, and their starting gear. There is a recommended heroic ability for each profession, but you can choose a different one if you want. Your profession is more like a background than a class. It's what your character did before they became an adventurer, rather than what kind of adventurer they are. Profession has no effect on how your character develops - that's all down to the skills you choose to improve and the heroic abilities you give your character. The exception to this is the Mage profession, as they're the only ones who start off knowing magic (although any character can choose to learn magic as they develop). When you push a roll you don’t need to take the condition for the attribute associated with the skill you’re using. You can choose any condition you don’t already have, you just need to be able to justify it narratively. So if you push a Swords roll in combat, you don't need to take the Exhausted condition (associated with STR). You could just as well take the Frightened condition (associated with WIL) by explaining that your character is starting to fear for their life and wonder if they've taken on an enemy that's too powerful. This mechanic often feeds really nicely into the storytelling. Critical hits in combat allow you to double the damage dice OR make a second attack (or ignore armour). You have to choose one effect - you don’t get all of them! A stretch is 15 minutes and a shift is 6 hours.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this all up. I also realized after reading the game further that I did not grasp a LOT to it, so I ended up making two more videos. If you get a chance I’d appreciate your take on those! Mainly because you have a lot more experience than me. One video is already up now, and the combat encounter demo one goes up in about 3 hours Learning the Rules: Dragonbane kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbV7gbyCt7DLioU.html

Savage Worlds uses a card-based initiative system done each round. Simply hand a card to each player and one to each significant NPC combatant group and call out from Ace to Two. Ties are handled in reverse suit order. Anyone who draws a Joker can act whenever and gets a bonus to their trait and damage rolls. Afterwards, the deck is reshuffled. Certain edges (feats) allow for characters to get two or three cards on their turn and pick the best one, while another calls for a redraw if given a 5 or lower. Having played Savage Worlds in the past, this is one of the fastest initiative systems if you want to change up turn order on a round-by-round basis (which keeps things spicy).

That’s fantastic to know. I’ve only played Savage Worlds on a VTT platform (Fantasy Grounds). Within that platform it was silky smooth and fast. I was only assuming that it would take a long time live in play. However, I assume that this takes the place of all the dice rolling, asking the players, and then setting up the cards. Probably not as fast as turn based initiative and going around the table, but will add so much more tactical decision making and the proverbial *spicy*ness ;)

@@jfacegames7354 Yeah, you'd shuffle the deck before the game starts and after the round where the Joker is drawn. I'm honestly quite surprised that I haven't found videos where folk try out the newly-proposed initiative for the upcoming D&D not-6e, where initiative is still rolled to see who goes first, but then players and monsters alternate their turns (player goes, then monster, then player, and so on) so that the group doesn't blow the Big Bad out of the water before it gets a chance to act. That would seem like something interesting to experiment with for at least one session.

I think Bob World Builder discussed that concept. I like that idea as well. I think it’s a cool concept. I wonder though if it makes it feel too “board gamey” because it’s so over structured though?

@@jfacegames7354 I'm not so sure if it would make it feel too board gamey. I prefer to have my combats have some feeling of everything kind of happening all at once, as one side taking their turn before the other side feels too artificial for me. "Hold on, my fellow bugbears! There are still two adventurers that need to unleash their attacks before we can act on this combat round!" That's kind of what I want to avoid in my combat scenarios if I can help it.

RuneQuest had ducks you could play early on. One of the original play testers was a fan of Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge and Howard the Duck.

I think that's where the Mallards in Dragonbane come from originally. The first edition of Dragonbane in Sweden was a translation of Chaosium's Magic World.

They're not classes. Your profession is at best a background, but they have 0 input on your progression as you become an Adventurer. Every PC's "class" is Adventurer, except that there aren't any classes in this game. But all professions do is give you a different starting spot than other players. They're *literally* your background before you became a hero. Also, stat rolling isn't straight down. You choose where each one goes when you roll it, but if you know you want high will power and you roll 18, you can put that in Willpower first. But you can't change them as you go. The only exception is being able to swap 2 at the end of. For example, you put a high number in a wanted stat then roll higher later.

Appreciate it. I wish I could go back and edit my own videos on the fly, haha. I played the starting adventure with some friends through maybe 7 sessions. We figured out a lot of that character creation aspects, and play. Appreciate the corrections! I’ll have to double check that I already changed it on my website after learning about it previously

Isn't that condition per attribute not pretty much something that many Powered by the Apocalypse games also do?

@@jfacegames7354 The basic Apocalypse World had five stats and four of them could get a penalty based on a condition, that idea of conditions as penalties to the stats is something that quite a few games powered by the apocalypse then also went with, often then with conditions for all stats.

All that money for an incomplete rules intro-booklet. Brigandine or ringmail anybody? Let's look at pole arms. Zombies, there are no zombies. Did they just forget? Just 16 monsters. People should be complaining not praising. This is poor in content.

Core Set on Drivethrurpg was $30 and gave me 15 PDFs. This rule book was one of those. That’s a serious deal to me As opposed to the 5e ones layers handbook that has no monsters in it and costs twice as much. I agree that it’s no PF2 book that seems to have an amazing wealth of information, but that might also not have any monsters? Was their an expectation that they had on their kickstarter that this was supposed to be more? I’m not aware of the history at all. Thanks for the feedback/opinion. This is stuff I like to learn
