Quick MOD: Identify your Huddleston trout ROF

Huddleston offers their legendary trout swimbaits in multiple ROF (rate of falls)...this is good. Huddleston does not mark the lures in any way for you to identify said ROF...this is not good.
Here is a simple way to put small, permanent identifiers on your Hudds (or any other soft lure).

If you look very close, it’s on the end of the tail. You have to turn it in the light just right sometimes. I’ll post a pic. Very hard to see. Some are marked well. This may be a new thing though, but I have noticed it on the deluxe 8”. Also squeeze the belly to see how far the lead extends. I’ll give measurements shortly. Sometimes hard to get a ROF you want so I save the ballast weight and mark the ROF. If I want a 0, I’ll take a ROF 5 and do surgery and stitch with mend-it

Great video, as always! What I do is, I brand my swimbaits using a letter and number stamping set. Just heat up for only a few seconds, then press gently upon contact and you are set for life. And you can use any combination you want. I use a 3/8" size and a 36pc set can be found for around $ 10 at hardware stores, probably even less when on sale.

+KeepinItReelFishing Nothing wrong with the paperclips, they do the job just as well and at the end of the day, that’s what counts. A good example showing that creativity doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Best regards and tight lines!

Right now its postspawn here in new england and im looking to fish some hudds. now i know theyd be way more effective earlier in the season during the spawn and prespawn but what can i do as of now to land some giants on the hudd? any tips for big swimbaits in postspawn???

what kind of luck have you had with the savage gear line through? anything comparable to the hudds? I have both and one huge hit on the hudd (so fare) but she came off right at the shore, however i think that the line through swims much more life like.

Great minds my man. I'm 3 mins in and can't resist commenting, lmao. I actually made a "1", a "2" and a "5" out of paper clips and branded the tails like that. Hudd used to stamp a number designation into the tails but I noticed they stopped doing that. The marker will take to the bare plastisol better but it still fades. I do have a little trick that I'll soon reveal in a vid I'm currently working on.

What do you think about using these in illinois??? No trout in these lakes I fish but plenty of big musky and bass...I have not caught one over 7.6 oz yet but catch lots of 4 lb average fish..Most I catch are 18 to 23 inch and thats real big here....I just know we have some bigger ones but maybe they are to smart or maybe with our winters they don't get as big...not sure??? Anyway I just bought a few 6 inch ones in more of a shad color and one 8 inch one...Also bought some mattlures gills and some huddleston gills....I don't think anybody is doing this yet around here on these pressured lakes..
@KeepinItReelFishing
@KeepinItReelFishing 7 жыл бұрын
I think its a great move. I'm a northeast angler and its the same deal in terms of max fish size. But, like you stated not too many people, if any, are doing it yet on the waters I fish. So....its still a high risk / high reward technique (at least with the 8" Hudd), but the upside is there is no pressure from other people using these lures. The 6" models and Huddgills are great, and I have averaged larger than normal fish, but the magic is with the 8" model. That lure gives big bites and almost only big bites.
@deionramsey1640

They make them in bass colors too. I live in Arizona and our lakes do have trout but I use the smaller Huddleston in bass colors when the bass are spawning. I will throw it all along bed lines because i want to make the bass think that its a hungry baby bass looking for food and the adult bass hammer it when it get near their nest.

If you look VERY closely at the end of the tail on the 8”, sometimes you can see the rof stamp. Mine are easy to identify. They’re all ROF 5 and 0 and I custom weigh them. I can squeeze one a little and tell the ROF.

@jackmoore2733
@jackmoore2733 7 жыл бұрын
Denver Williams I also live in texas and almost all of my big swimbaits are in rainbow trout color and I catch a lot of fish on them. I have a couple swimbaits in shad color and there's no difference. they don't stock trout in the lakes I fish, btw. the bass will eat anything they can fit in their mouth, color doesn't matter that much.

You were saying the marker doesn't bond to the bait very well. Do you think it would be possible to use JJ's magic and a Q-tip and draw it on? Like using the dark blue on the lighter baits or the chartreuse on the perch color? I know using it on worms it bonds pretty much permanently to the bait. Not sure how well it would show up on the hudd though.
@KeepinItReelFishing

+TheBushwooky Oohh....that's a good idea. Yeah, your right. JJ's appears to chemically bond with whatever you dip it in. Good thinking man!

on a day of fishing how many bites would you average on the swimbaits?
@KeepinItReelFishing
@KeepinItReelFishing 8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Whatley On this particular lure Jerry (the 8" Huddleston) I will average one solid bite a day. Operative word there is "average". There are many days where I get zero, and there are days I get two or three bites. Averaged out over the year its around a bite per outing. Again, thats on this lure. Other lures have very different averages depending on the size of the lure and the action. I find the 8" Hudd to be a very low numbers lure, but averages considerably larger fish than any of my other lures.

Any tips on how to fish the ROF 0 ? The one I have floats on its side 😢
@KeepinItReelFishing
@KeepinItReelFishing 11 ай бұрын
ROF 0's are tricky. Mine always fished as a super slow sink. They are so much more susceptible to being 'off'. The tiniest change in weight, or placement of it in manufacturing can/will cause a slight sink or as yours is doing rolling on its side. I know of no fix for it. You can try to counterbalance it with the lightest nail weight(s) you can find, but in correcting the posture you will likely make it a very slow sink.

I have a few savage gear trout. Are the Huddlestons a lot better?
@KeepinItReelFishing
@KeepinItReelFishing 8 жыл бұрын
+Shawn “Uncle Dukes Kayak Fishing” Barham Hey Shawn - No...not better, but certainly different. The Huddleston goes for minimal motion (just the tail swag) vs the whole body serpentine swim of the Savage Gears. You can do some things with a Hudd that you can't do well with the Savage....namely SLOWLY crawling it on the bottom. You may have seen video's on this or heard about it, but going crazy slow dragging a Hudd is a ong provem technique for cold water bass or just bass holding very deep. The Savage excels at inspiring warmer water fish to strike due to its intense action...something the Hudd just can't do. Both will certainly work in varied conditions, but they are very different and excel in the above mentioned respects.
