2 ideas to add to this. Before using pipe wrench to turn the cylinder, put protective cloth there. The pipe wrench will still be able to bite hard enough to turn the cylinder, but you wont score the hydraulic piston that in turn will penetrate the seal if lowered enough. Second, you can use the hammer on the plastic roller star of the chair while it's all together to get the rollers off, that way your not hitting the pressurised cylinder, so you have less chance to damage the cylinder. Once the star with rollers is removed, then flip the chair and use the pipe wrench to remove the cylinder. Less chance of overall damaging anything.

I've never had one that was this easy, lol all of mine get stuck and no matter how much you hammer it or try to twist it, they do not come off from the swivel and don't budge.

Hope the following tip is useful to others: Long story short, if the pipe wrench is not budging the old gas piston, get a blow dryer or a heat gun (basically the macho tool version of a blow dryer) and point it as the base of the gas piston (i.e. where it enters the seat) for a good 10-20 minutes. I'm in the middle of doing a gas piston replace on a second chair, and I had hoped it would be easier than the first, but it looks like I'm going to have to pull out the blow dryer again. As other commenters have said, I tried all the obvious tricks. My pipe wrench actually cut GROOVES in the metal of the old gas piston. The blow dryer worked. I'm still not sure why. Obviously metal expands when it heats up, maybe some combination of that expansion breaking the seal, or just forcing the hole to widen, or the heat softening the plastic sleeve it slots into. Any way you slice it, it worked.

I used 18inch pipe wrench both ends, and 3lb hammer to no avail. WD40 too. Can't think of anything else.

Pipe wrench does NOT work for Winrise WR-999 model chair. Once gas cylinder is attached to seat base bracket, it is permanent. Only total annihilation of the cylinder would get it removed. So, viewers, please note that this cylinder removal tip is only for select types of chairs and not all.

Life saver. So simple, but if you didn't know how...

I was able to twist the top end using the pipe wrench, but the bottom part got stuck in the wheels-frame. Hammering the bottom part didn’t work. I tried the pipe wrench on the bottom part as well but didn’t work. It just ruined the pipe. I’m stuck. Please help!

it wouldnt come off for me, the wrench was shaving the cylinder no matter how hard i tried to squeeze it. Had to cut the base with a grinder to take the cylinder out
