Thanks again. I have been watching for a while now and always enjoy your videos. I like to watch others painting or talking about painting as I drink my morning coffee before starting with my own painting. Thanks as always

i have just dove into oil painting, and being an enthusiast especially in folk, i know the importance of good tools. I wanted to thank you again for all your tips. Also, if you are interested in trying another good brush, I highly recommend the Tisch Dagger. It does wonders and sets a nice line. Thanks Again

This was great, Dianne. I am a watercolour artist but would like to get into oils, especially portraiture. I have recently ordered Rosemary Ivory filberts, flats and one or two rounds. I think they are synthetic. Classics looked lovely but have badger hair. I have a problem with that. You must really look after your brushes to have them so long. Love learning from you.

Anne-Marie, if there IS one thing I'm towards obsessive about it's taking care of my brushes. They are the tools that enable me to make a painting do what I want it to.

I use Rosemary brushes, I find them perfectly balanced, I was fortunate enough to meet Rosemary at an art fair some years ago.

I think in general there are no bad or inadequate brushes. It's a matter of finding the right way to make use of them. Precise or loose brushwork, broader or smaller areas, etc. Some artists use cheap wall painting brushes, hard scrubbing ones, rags, sticks, their fingers, rubber window wipers, and more bizarre painting tools.

Yes, precisely! Some artists use horribly splayed brushes to place infinitely delicate marks. It's amazing. Imagination, trial and error. Excellent page and insights. Congratulations!@@IntheStudioArtInstruction

Thank you Dianne. I’ve only recently started to get a feel for my own preferences. (Soft filberts are my favorites). I felt like I had taken a step forward just realizing that I did, indeed, have a preference!

I've got some Rosemary bristle brushes. They're very good, I recommend. I also like the Windsor & Newton bristle brushes. Equally as good.

I love rosemary brushes. I have quite a lot of different types from them. Their ultimate bristle brushes are wonderful. Also the masters series. And there sables are fab. The cost is amazing. Much cheaper than anything else of similar quality. Another big thing that makes them my favourite is how good the company treats me. They are really helpful and always go the extra mile to make sure you are always happy. I highly recommend them

@@masterpainters1706 Their customer service is indeed wonderful. I once had an order which was late, phoned the company and they immediately offered to send me a new package, but I told them I would wait a few more days, and then my package came so I emailed them to say all was well.

I have a collection of expensive sable watercolor brushes and have been reluctant to use them with oil. What are your favorite soft-bristle brushes made of?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 5 жыл бұрын
John, it's not a good idea to use watercolor brushes with oils if you plan to continue using them with watercolor. The oil will absorb into the bristles, contaminating their effectiveness with watercolor. The Vermeer brushes are made of mongoose hair.

Thanks for this review. The Rosemary are way over rated, my Ivorys were ruined in 10 days, some of the other brushes I received already splayed. My make up brushes have lasted way longer (12 years) and I wash them every day. The Zen brushes from Langnickel are good, cheap at $3.-/brush, then throw them away when they're done.

That's a pity you had that experience with Rosemary brushes. This is the first negative report I've heard about them. I have a question: why would you want to throw away a brush? They are to a painter what a bow is to a violinist.

You should call rosemary and tell them the problems you have had. I've never had any similar problems. I know they would want to hear from you and hear what went wrong for you. I have to say I have never had any problems with their brushes and mine are in amazing condition even the oldest. Of course they do have expected wear and tear but in my experience it's less than others I've paid more for from other companies. The synthetic ones likes the ivories have been very robust. I'm not trying to downplay your experience though. It's just unusual. I really really do suggest that you call them up and let them know. I'd be shocked if they didn't try to help you out.

Brushes are like ballerina pointe shoes, a dancer uses 1 to 3 pairs a day, once they're broken, you can't mend them, or if you do they break again at the 1rst use, and I know about that having been a dancer. What you can try with twisted filaments is stick them together with gum arabic, leave the brush for 6 months, but the straightening doesn’t last, I suspect because they are synthetic. When the tip is bent like an inverted L shape, you have a hard time doing precise strokes. You try to adapt your strokes but it becomes hit and miss, with more and more misses. Nothing like a new brush for good solid work.

@@toequantumspace That might work well for trees, but not for portraits unfortunately
