Locate the beekeeping associations in your area.
Recenty I have seen some inquiries about how to get started in beekeeping next year. So these quick tips for a while will answer the question, what should I do to get started in beekeeping next year?
How do you do this?
1. Contact the county extension office. Here in Kentucky we have county extension offices. They are associated with the University of Kentucky and provide all kinds of educational opportunities from 4H to agricultural methods and opportunities. if that does not work then contact
2. Contact the state beekeepers association. Here in Kentucky there is the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association. They maintain a list of all of the county beekeepers associations on their web site. If that does not work out
3. Contact the department of agriculture. Beekeeping rules and regulations fall under the department of agriculture. You will want to ask for the office of the State Apiarist. The state apiarist should be able to point you in the right direction.
4. You should be able to locate this information by doing a web search, so you do not have to contact these people directly, however, once you find your local beekeepers association you should contact the president of the association directly and introduce yourself and find out about the next meeting.
5. Attend the next meeting. Meet a few people. Find out about how they communicate with their members, email list, social media, Facebook and the like. Ask which social media groups are good for your location. Get to know these people. They may be the most helpful resource you have on your beekeeping journey.
For example, I am a member of the Bullitt county beekeepers association, they meet on the second
Wednesday of each month at the Bullitt county extension office. Nearby counties also have associations Nelson, Spencer, Oldham county, Jefferson County.
By the way one beekeeper association everyone should be aware of is the Southwest Ohio Beekeepers Association. Recently many of their meetings have been online and they have had some great speakers. People from all over the country attend these online meeting.
