Exquisite demonstration of rhythm in art. Reminds me of Vilppu's rhythm in figure drawing. Gorgeous and deserves far more views and thumbs up. So rare to find such ideas in the arts. thank you!

You are bringing life to art! "Rhythm, flow, curves" - such is the language of mathematics and science studying light, color, sound, and energy. So touching and inspiring! Thank you. Blessings.

Wow! All these disciplines are responding to the universe, just taking different approaches. What delights me is that every single principle of composing paintings is also, in one way or another, a principle of how the universe works.

That was a lovely demonstration of rhythm lines in art by a lovely lady. I'd love to see her bringing her great framework to life.

I am really learning. What a wonderful way you have of explaining ' how to' paint but I am learning how ' to observe' the object I am wanting to paint! You are a great teacher!

Thanks, Donna. A lot of folks think they can learn a formula for "how to" paint, but when we learn how to observe, we open up a world of infinite possibilities.

This exercise is amazing and thank you so much for showing all this! It can look like Rhythm it's a subject that may seem like an easy concept but in reality, it's so hard to get right and really understand. In music, it's more obvious, but in visual art, I found it's not so easy to catch and really understand at all.

Like all the visual art principles, once we understand it intellectually, we can make it work for us. Have fun with this.

@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Yes, thank you so much!! I'm trying to understand it intellectually and I came across this idea that, a beautiful thing had three primary characteristics: integritas (wholeness), consonantia (proportionality) and claritas (radiance). And as Joseph Campbell was trying to explain consonantia he put it as a rhythm that if fortunately achieved/rendered, then you are held in aesthetic arrest, and you can feel this radiance. And this part puzzles me because it made me think about Unity and Harmony as principles of art and how Rhythm is different or it's actually the same thing?

So important and so beautifull. Its very rare that anybody talk and illustrate this basic quality of any image. And the image of the iris flower is a true dance of petals. I intend to develop this image into an abstract image of the wonderfull flow of movement and the rhythms oflight and dark

It is one of the most graceful of all flowers. I think we miss out when we look for only description in our images.

Lovely tip! So understandable and timely for my art growth. I am doing a painting and noticed the gestures the mushroom created going up the tree and thought to myself, how can I capture that? and now I know.

What is the purpose of doing this? Is it only to get a feel for the gesture of the subject, but then when you paint your subject in oils you don't do this? I am confused. You said in Tip 22 "never paint the grasses first," but block in shapes only. So, is this just an exercise to see the rhythms, but you never start an oil painting this way? Or, do you do it later on top of the value block in? Do you only do it with subjects that are more complex than tall grasses so you can understand the rhythms?

Rhythm is a composing principle that helps bring life to our painting. It is created by how we move the brush, how shapes are arranged as well as how they are created. In my book, Finding Freedom to Create, I call rhythm an energy in consistent flowing motion. It is a functional partner of order, unity, harmony and balance--the other universal composing principles. So it is always in the mix of everything we do when we are composing paintings. This is just one exercise to bring that into focus.

Hi, I am intrigued about the thought of starting out with gouache and then painting over in oils. I know that some people do a light acrylic underpainting and then continue the painting in oils. Also: on the subject of misting (when not doing an underpainting with OMS and a transparent color): how would you "number" that step in the painting process? First familiarizing with the subject =1. Then a preliminary drawing =2. Thirdly a block-in, etc. My question is: doesn't the misting deserve a number? Is it, for example, before or after a preliminary drawing with a tombow pe Thank you so much for your enlightenment.
