Very good demonstration…..it’s not always easy to remember that color temperature is relative…..one always needs to be comparing the color to another color as it appears beside the other color…..thank you!

The trick is remembering that everything is relative, be it painting or drawing, constant comparison to what's around it.

Colour Temperature is the final boss in Fine Art Painting. No wonder so many are confused in the comments. This is something you are going to have to painstakingly lay out on a canvas or panel swatch after swatch to get a feel for colour temperature effects. You can make things recede into the distance, or come forward in the work, even though by all other accounts it should not work. Relative value is key to understanding this concept. Colours appear warm or cool depending on what neighbor they are surround by. I personally use the same thought process as I do when dealing with light and dark value transitions. Velatura (glazing, in the Queen's English) is a good way to control your temperatures, especially after completing the picture and letting your brain dial in all the values correctly. Then you can excavate your precious painting using temperature, all the while looking like you aren't progressing on the work at all.

If I’m unsure as to whether a particular colour is warm or cool, I imagine myself on a freezing cold day and think of what colour sweater I would like to put on. Or on a hot, humid day, what colour t-shirt would I like to put on? It can really help! Thank you for all you share so generously, Dianne, and it must be a lot of work making these super-helpful videos.

The trickiest aspect of all this are the optical illusions that occur when slightly warm colors are surrounded by even warmer colors and vice versa. There have been times that I could have sworn I was looking at a very muted blue only to find that the color was actually a grey on the warm side of neutral when revealed by a color sampler. Sometimes our own eyes deceive us.

Colour and how we perceive it is very strange. When we look at snow or ice, we certainly don't get a feeling of warmth, but we do by looking at fire. This is how I try to determine the temperature of a colour. Is this normal? I don't understand why certain colours effect me emotionaly, maybe I should look into it, but I'm a sucker for sunset's and sunrise's. Even more so for the magnificent display of colour's we see in space.

I have been experimenting with using complementary colors for grey. The one which has me puzzled is violet and yellow. Mine always comes out brownish to which I have to add blue... could it be a problem with the specific color I use? Thanks
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with yellow/violet is that so yellows tend to lean towards orange or green which requires that the violet be adjusted accordingly to get an exact complement. If the resulting mix turns brownish, then both have too much red in them. If they turn olivish, then two much blue is present.

Diane, have you ever gotten so frustrated by a painting that you just painted over the whole thing and started over?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction

Thankfully, those days are behind me. I have discovered that if I get the colors and design right from the beginning, that won't happen. That's why I do lots of studies before beginning a painting.
@omnesilere
@omnesilere 2 жыл бұрын
Diane's really gonna lose you guys. It is 100% not based on our physical experience of heat and cold; color temperature is about the relative color differences. A reder blue is warm, a yellower blue is cool, a yellower red is warm, a bluer red is cool, a reder yellow is warm, a bluer yellow is cool. It's not a split down the middle of the color wheel, temperature is relative. Honestly there are better people out there for this concept than Diane though she's great at a lot. I recommend you play around with two colors and white, ultramarine blue and either transparent red oxide or burnt sienna or (burnt umber would be fine.) You'll see how you can turn form or make things recede or pop even keeping the same value just by alternating the temperature.
@amandagermany5933
@amandagermany5933 2 жыл бұрын
I think she does a good job of explaining that temp is relative by telling us to compare values and hues.. Generally speaking, it IS actually a split down the color wheel according to most artists and theorists. With yellow, orange and red in the warm group and blue, green and cyan being the coolest. The only thing really being disagreed upon by you vs Diane is how this came to be. It only makes sense that we developed the IDEA of warm or cold based on what we physically associate those attributes to relate to. Warm is a sensation as much as it is a visual aspect. Same for cool.
