Ever get nasty deformations around the joints of your character? Learn to use triangles the right way in this quick tip video.
You may already know this if you’ve been modeling characters for a while, but this technique was new to me.

Whaaat?😮 Wow, that was a really nice solution. I'll try to replicate the scenario and add a horizontal cut on the rectangle you ended up with on the back of the knee. Cheers.

@@RELFIR well since he's doing this in blender you could just apply a material instead of a texture and that wouldn't be warped.

I see what you mean, but then why not just replace the triangles and fill in the space with two squares?
@CertifiedDoc
@CertifiedDoc 9 ай бұрын
If I understand your suggestion, then you end up with an n-gon on the back, and you still have extra vertices on the sides. Or you have two n-gons on the side with vertices in the middle of them. Either way, that *might* work, but it's much more prone visual artifacts than triangles or quads alone.

Any tips for joint that has subdiv modifier? For low poly this method is awesome but at high poly the folds are smoothed so they are visible
@BasedMando

Put an edge loop in the center of the quad at the back. You now have two quads at the sides instead of tris. Now subdivide to you hearts content.

Sorry to say, but this is not a good solution, it deforms the texture in a bad way, and is a bad overall tehnique. Just use loops and all is good, bu stay away from triangles wherever there is deformation going on. I am a game developer and artist, so i speak from experience.

I'm happy I read this because I've come across this exact triangle based joint a million times on the Internet and this video right here actually convinced me to start using it despite the triangles. I still didn't like it however. I do wonder how you'd do joints on higher detail models as you obviously wouldn't be able to get away with a mere 3 edge loops and if you have to work even just 18 edge loops on the joint, moving the edge loops about becomes a lot more tedious to get right. in my case I have an extremely low poly arm(basically just a beveled cube) and it needs to be able to make a full 90 degree turn and when turned that way the upper arm and lower arm should also meet and not go inside each other
