Quick tip on seating a tire bead with a tie down strap. This works pretty good unless you have a huge bead gap.

A little squirt of starter fluid with valve stem out of course pops any wheel to bead instantly as well. If mounting car tires for example with big gaps it really hard with strap as it will end up just crushing one side of wheel and not push out uniformly the whole tire. I ended the struggles with starter fluid. 😊

If you can’t get the bead to seat as shown here, try running the strap diagonally across the tire. Also, a wider truckers’ type strap also might work better. Wider straps, with their longer handles and greater leverage, also are easier to release. Successfully seating the bead and airing the tire to ensure it stays put (assuming the valve is left in) makes the ratchet strap really tight.

Just used this trick. Used it before. Thought I invented it. Came on youtube for some tips a ether and the strap trick was all I found. Didn't want to blow myself up so just used the strap. First time i popped the strap to soon and it didn't seat. Second go I gave it hell a set both beads then released the strap. If some blew the strap it could do some serious damage.

On the money mossman, I just did the same thing with 2 new mower tires. I couldn't get the QD to fill the tire w/o an air chuck on it though. I've seen others do it too but mine wasn't having it. I was lucky that I was doing smaller tires (20x10x8) that I could set the bead with the valve stem installed, remove the strap and continue to air up.

Been using a long pipe clamp (wormclamp) and drill with nut driver bit on small wheels like on hose reel carts etc., for years. I run the screw on the clamp with my drill just enough for the bead to contact the rim and put a little air in the tire, valve stem IN, then remove the clamp and fill tire to about 10 lbs over inflated rating to make sure the bead is "set". Then bleed it down to proper pressure. Works EVERY TIME! Thanks for "highjacking" MY idea!🙄 😂🤣😁

I've never had success with the strap on trailer tires , Lt 35x12 e load on stock 17x8 Dodge wheels , 265 70 17 mud tires e load on stock 17x7.5 jeep commander wheels . The strap did allow some heavy soap to make the final bead seal with a lot of air volume on a couple tires but it was a pita. A can of starter fluid and a lighter are much easier and making sure the valve core is out so you don't have to rush to fill it with air before it cools in second or two and sucks back in with the core out it will stay where it is .

Funny, I didn't think I needed a valve stem remover since I already got the old tire off without it. Guess I need one away. Good tip. Question: Some videos say 100 psi or so is needed. Which is right? How much pressure are the "explosion" or seating tank methods producing? I'm struggling with a front motorcycle tire but I'm sure your video will help. Thank you.
@mossman381
@mossman381 4 жыл бұрын
Motorcycle tires can be difficult to seat the bead. My advise is to get some tire paste. That will really help to bead pop on. You will find the recommended psi for seating the bead on the tire. I wouldn't recommend going over that.

I only heard one pop for the bead seating? I just went through this (that's why I'm here watching) If you don't hear 2 pops, one for each side, is it a bad sign? Couple hours ago, mine only gave me one pop. Was getting ready to deflate it and start again, but it is holding air and I"m going to wait until morning and mounting to see if it is properly seated.
@mossman381
@mossman381 3 жыл бұрын
They don't always pop. You should be able to see that the bead is seated. There will be no gaps and the tire will look even on the rim.
@Redmenace96
@Redmenace96 3 жыл бұрын
@@mossman381 Yes! Did that check, and looks even to me. And I also put more dish soap on the wheel/tire edge. No bubbles. Googled it, and found that pops are relative. Depends on several factors. Picturing one side of the tire riding high, being well lubed, and 'sliding onto the bead'? And then just one side giving the expected pop. Was working with one source of information, when I started. After reading more, your comment helps, I think it is seated. Some people change tires 5-6 times a year. (pros do it daily) I've done it about 3 times in my life. Need some reassurance that things are jake. Thanks for the comment!

Anytime you are working with tires you need to be careful. Even just airing them up to need to listen for weird noises and stay away from the blow out area. When I am airing older tires up, I look away. If the tire blows up it will probably seriously hurt me, but it won't take my vision. I saw a guy one time that had a semi tire blow up on him. He was blind, deaf and had some pretty bad scars all over him.

You just have to be careful and use common sense. I have mounted a lot of tires in my life and I could not get the beads seated on some. This works and if you use common sense, you won't hurt yourself.
