Sonic was always supposed to be the “hip”, “trendy”, “cool kid” type character, so the flossing honestly makes sense.

I didn’t really view the plot as “I’m lost in the human world, what do I do?” I more-so saw it as “I had to come to the human world as a child and stay hidden from everyone, I’m super lonely.”

I love the fact that in order to make the “best video game movie ever” all you have to do is not screw it up horribly.

This movie is just like 90's energy incarnate: - There's Jim Carrey - It's a buddy road-trip movie - It's a found-family movie - It's a stereotypical good-guy vs evil scientist story - It's technically a buddy-cop movie - Government is after top-secret alien - Sonic himself just radiates 90's kid energy; his cave is the best example cause it tells us so much about him without even telling us anything about it. There's nunchuks, there's a boombox with a variety of cassette tapes, a beanbag chair, a pile of comic books, a ping-pong table, there's fairy-lights strewn about the place, it just looks like a kids clubhouse full of hand-me-down stuff. - Sonic is a kid and he acts like one; I know a lot of people didn't like it when he flossed (nobody had a problem with Marvel when they partnered with EpicGames and shoved Thor playing Fortnite in Endgame), but he's a kid, he probably saw other kids do it and thinks it's cool too so he does it. On top of that, he's quippy and sarcastic, he's always got some smart-allec remark, and he does stuff without thinking it through - There's blatant, almost self-aware product placement; Wayne's World is probably the best example of blatant, self-aware 90's product placement. - It's a wild and wacky plot as a whole. - A parent character dies early on (spoilers I guess?).

What attracted Jim Carrey to this project more than anything else was that his daughter was a big fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog games growing up. The "Mushroom Planet" directly evokes Mushroom Hill Zone from the first level of Sonic & Knuckles (1994). In that zone the various mushrooms could be used as springs and platforms for Sonic to jump on. There is a Chaos Emerald drawn on Sonic's map. Many Sonic games revolve around Sonic's efforts to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds. When Sonic starts rolling along the ground, two sounds from the games play simultaneously: the iconic "Spin Attack" sound, and the "Dash Pad" sound. The ring sound effect from the games is heard when Sonic catches a ring with his quill in midair. Tom (and Sonic) live in Green Hills, Montana. While this is not a real place, there is a luxury property in Montana called Green Hills Ranch. The Flash is seen to be Sonic's favorite superhero. Both are speedster heroes, obviously. Sonic's bare feet are never shown. Tails is voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who has voiced the character since 2014. The Sonic movie in a sentence: simple yet fun. To further explain: Sonic's personality and the character chemistry between him, Marsden, and Eggman helps this movie shine-just like in the games. The reason he has such a lasting legacy is BECAUSE of his iconic personality. Here it's much more kid like, but the tone works. He's cocky, but not arrogant. I like that. And this isn't the first time Sonic has come to Earth-it's never clear in Modern Sonic games if he's on Earth or not, such as with Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic X he's also on Earth for the first two seasons. Somehow, it works.

"Because Sonic can't go to San Francisco himself?" Well...his whole life he's lived in Green Hills. He's got no clue where San Fran is. Tom told him to go "West" despite the fact that their town is somewhere in Washington or Oregon. I'm sure Sonic doesn't have a map or knows where to point out Green Hills on a map. Sure, he'll eventually figure it out but not before Robotnik finds him and such. But still.

This movie reminded me of why I loved Sonic as a kid. I was an angsty adolescent, and Sonic made me believe I could do anything. It also made me curious and fearful of technology. I was also a foster kid, so that ending reminded me of that last home I had, where I was truly wanted, and how it changed my life. I was in much tears at the end of this movie, and I still believe I can do anything.

Really enjoyed your review, fair critique I do agree with some of the points your made about Jim Carey but Dr Robotnik is pretty eccentric in media particularly the old cartoons of Sonic and he captures the Americanised version of Robotnik/Eggman very well.

SPOILER Also, Sonic went on a road trip with Tom instead of just finding his own way in a few seconds because he wanted to finally have a friend for the first time in a decade and *really* didn't want to go to the mushroom world, which would be infinitely lonelier than Earth was to him.

This movie was pretty good, but I can say with confidence that this movie ACTUALLY has potential to be a good series of films: If they play the cards right with the characters and a serious, but still family-friendly plot, this can be an excellent thing in the Sonic Franchise.

Honestly I except cheesy buddy-road-comedy-movie with characters going back to their world with the human characters completely changed because of the encounter like most “cartoon in rl” movies or something I wasn’t expecting the story of a tiny blue child getting adopted after fighting an insane robotics mayor BUT I LOVED IT

As someone who's been a Sonic fan since I was 12, here's some interesting parallels in the movie that I wanted to point out (SPOILER WARNING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANNA WATCH THE MOVIE): -Robotnik randomly says a Japanese line in one part of the film while reacting to Sonic's quill. This could very much be a neat reference to Sonic X, the first Sonic anime, along with Eggman from Sonic Adventure 2 who also spoke random Japanese lines like "Yosh" -In the beginning of the movie we see that Sonic in this incarnation of him was raised by a owl creature, forgot her name, but that has never been a thing in any other version of Sonic and it's both strange and creative at the same time. Usually Sonic is depicted as a orphan (as his creator intended) who just lived all on his own his whole life, and is basically a nomad. Here he has someone he cares about as a family, which is interesting to see. Yes in the Archie comics he had parents, along with a mom in Sonic Underground, but Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Uekawa has said that Sonic is meant to be a orphan with no parents at all -There was echidnas who appeared in the beginning, and I recognized them as Knuckle's family tribe! There are the people who protected the Master Emerald before Knuckles, and they died in video game canon while Knuckles was a kid. Since Knuckles is a bit older then Sonic, 16, I'd imagine they must have died during the fight with the owl or they died shortly after but that's just a personal theory of mine -Sonic also got to live in Tom's basement at the end of the movie, which I think is a neat parallel to Sonic X as well, where Sonic and his friends all hid in the basement back at season one of the series whenever they needed to hide from people, so they technically lived there -We had never really seen how Robotnik was like before he became ape shit while trying to get Sonic, but I do know that there was a descend in his sanity levels. This was mainly exploded in a good bit of the comics that I read as far as I know, but Robotnik never really had a good grasp on his sanity in the first place. So it's hard to say if it was really Eggman or not that we saw slowly descend into madness throughout the movie, or Jim Carry just being Jim Carry, but either way it was interesting to see -The rings I believe did indeed have powers to open portals to other worlds, that's just common lore, but they never really had a creator or something beforehand, which is why I think the owl is a good character to have that could answer some pretty nifty questions about how the movie writers think the rings were made -Sonic in pretty much all incarnations of him is usually seen as someone who's constantly optimistic, impatient but he doesn't really have a temper and he doesn't quite get angry, a natural born leader, constantly witty and cracking up jokes and sarcasm, and doesn't quite show his age as being canonically 15, expect when he's running on his pure impulses or avoiding Amy. Here, we can actually SEE how he's still just a kid. He's still growing, and it shows. He isn't a leader yet, he isn't someone who can handle his powers yet, and he isn't someone who can naturally roll with the punches yet either. This makes me wonder if there is a sequel, how they could possibly get Sonic to grow. I find it intriguing that here they made Sonic's powers tied to his emotions because that was never a thing before, which was why I was surprised whenever he got angry or upset, because that's not the Sonic I know. However it wasn't until the end, when we saw Sonic start calling Robitnik Eggman, when it really clicked for me that this is supposed to be a Sonic that's still growing, and maybe what he really needs now is actually his other friends in the series to get him to become the Sonic we see in the movies, which I'm excited to see if they do try to do that. -Finally, I shall end this with a out of context quote from Eggman in the movie. -"LOOK WHAT CAME OUT OF MY SACK" -Robotnik

Sonic in this Movie reminds me of Silver. The Fandom version of Silver, more specifically. The pure excitement Sonic has in this film is adorable, and it instantly reminded me of my favourite boi. They're both so innocent, and I love it. 💙💙💙 This is my favourite film of all time. I was more excited than I can even express, and I walked out with Tails in my mind, and how the sequel's gonna turn out. See, I thought the whole Sonic interacting with real humans was a nod to the Sonic Adventure games, and the Sonic X anime. Oh! And apparently the rings being portals to another universe was a reference to the Sonic The Movie OVA, according to my brother. Edit: I feel like he doesn’t know that much about the Sonic franchise… I saw this and saw more elements of Sonic than he talked about.

I just saw it today, and I'm glad I watched it :D To be honest, though, I didn't go because of any attachment to Sonic but rather in support of the heccin amazing people who put all that time into redesigning and reanimating Sonic

Here's my take, before taking everything Saber said as gospel please take a sec to read this: - As an almost 21 year old, I fucking LOVE the trope of humans becoming friends with a creature. (Don't lump me in with kids, not everything you don't agree with means it's only liked by kids, Saber) - In-movie ads don't bother me at all. Places exist, they can be referenced in movies which are supposed to take place in a realistic world. - The human characters were fun, I liked Tom and thought he was a pretty realistic character. He's also endearing and kind-hearted. The other human characters are good too. - The jokes are completely fine, they're really funny in some areas. I'd agree and say not all land completely, but it's no where near as bad as Saber was making it out to be. - Sonic looks fine and is a fantastic blend of cartoon and realism. - Action in the movie is extremely fun and entertaining. - Jim Carrey was fucking AMAZING, don't listen to Saber, he's a great Robotnik. Saber shouldn't be offering this kind of opinion if he doesnt know Robotnik's character. Also quick note to Saber, don't shit all over a movie with a character that you know nothing about???? Of course you're not going to fucking like/appreciate it if you don't like Sonic??? This line of logic is so confusing to me. If you like Sonic, go see this movie. It's a fun, not-so-serious hour of your time. I went to see it with my friends and we were all laughing really hard at a lot of the moments. Just don't go in with a super critical eye and you'll have a lot of fun!

Sonic was the first movie I've seen since How to Train Your Dragon in the theaters and while I didn't love it, I enjoyed it. It got a few laughs out of me, especially the bar fight scene!
