I don't understand how old money has become a trend/esthetic when I always thought it was an existence. A being. A verb. 🫠🫠🫠 you cannot dress or become old money. You just are. And quiet luxury is still supposed to be rooted in you actually having money

I like the concept of neutrals that are easy to mix and match. Also, buy nice pieces and switch them out. Don't buy trends and stuff that can only make it through the wash once. Also get breathable fabrics. It is really healthier for your skin. There are positives to this "trend" even though this concept has been around forever

Old money, new money, black, white, it does not matter. Live the life that you want. You should only wear whatever feels comfortable for you. It would be very boring if everyone was dressed the same. I am only wearing classic items because I like this style but I love to see other trends. For me even the blingbling sometimes is nice to look at.

It's the business casual for me 😂 this is definitely not *old money" because I don't see one cowboy boot in sight 😂 people who have old money focus more on personal style. She was in a bad boy phase and dated Scott bc she wanted to and then settled for a regular rich guy because she got tired of being cheated on by bad boys and thought she would be safer. I feel like there are so many layers to this subject.... The need for validation is central to why trends exist at all. It's all a matter of who you are trying to be accepted by or impress... The lack of genuineness in people is a result of overcompensating for feelings of inadequacy, caused by capitalism, chauvanism, classism, and racism. Personally, I am a big proponent of buying high quality clothing and I'm am highly interested in fabric quality and construction quality. So I am really big on knitwear and my closet staples from brunello cucinelli, loro piana, zegna, and tods. Personally I have never liked the idea of big labels as I never liked the idea of essentially advertising other brands. I think however a distinction needs to be made between old money aesthetic and quiet luxury. Whilst I personally support quiet luxury (and have been into quiet luxury way before it became a big thing), I thing the old money aesthetic trend is what is actually problematic. Nothing worse than supporting fast fashion brands that source cheap unethical labour, use crappy fabrics and poor construction.

I went to school with some very wealthy people in NY. At that time it was considered "de-classe" to wear clothes with labels on the outside. I remember in the early 80's people started wearing labels on the outside, like Izod.

Quiet luxury, or the "Old Money" aesthetic, has been around forever, and will continue for another 100 yrs or so. Nothing about it every changes aside from what we call it. In the 1980s, it was the "preppy" look, and it took its inspiration from the films Chariots of Fire, Maurice, and Out of Africa. Ralph Lauren drove it, but he ripped his looks from Brooks Brothers, the Ivy League, and families like the Kennedys and the Windsors. You can take this concept all the way back to the 1920s with The Great Gatsby, the Duke of Windsor, the Vanderbilts, the Astors, and even the early Bush clan. There's nothing NEFARIOUS about the concept, to be honest. It relies ONLY on the following ideas: Quality over quantity; Subtlety over flash; and Eternal style over disposable fads. Sure, you can spend $10,000 on a tasteful cashmere or suede coat that will never go out of style, or you can buy a camel safari jacket from Banana Republic or J Crew for 200 and get the same effect. The point is to invest in classic pieces made with good fabrics that the owner can wear for decades. The end result is that 1) you will slowly build a large and versatile wardrobe that never lets you down, AND 2) you won't be laughed at when pictures of you surface 15 yrs from now of you wearing a tacky, blinged-out Versace track suit with a shiny gold lame top coat. Trust me... no one wants that.

Quiet luxury is basically “how can I position myself as close to whitness as possible?” I am exhausted with these trends.

Old money are the people you never see. One of the best books to read is Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. Old money has a phenomenal history of exclusion and slavery. Old money can ruin a reputation with a whisper- I worked in Princeton- where old money were the worst dressed on Nassau at. And lived in a few rooms in their massive homes to save on electric. I really wished the trend setters used a better phrase than old money. There is a higher class that lives in the stratosphere who wouldn’t be caught dead in designer clothes. Is anyone else frustrated at this being referred to as a 'trend'? I feel it's the novices who got into very casually following fashion during the hypebeast/ logomania era who are just now discovering ‘quiet luxury’ and ‘stealth wealth’, calling it a trend, and discussing it ad nauseam on social media in what feels like an evolution of _their_ idea of luxury. The pendulum is swinging away from that era, and they noticed. Did they not notice quiet luxury is nothing new? That part genuinely gave me pause. 🤔It’s bizarre seeing people behaving as if quiet luxury is some kind of brand new idea or aesthetic. It's not a 'trend', it's been people's lifestyle for decades. If anything it's a mindset. It makes sense for a lot of people to avoid the trending hopping and invest in timeless, versatile, understated pieces in neutral tones made from quality fabrics. Since when is that 'new'?

My self care obsession is HEALTH and WELL BEING. Buying my Vitamix, my Pure Juicer, fasting, improving the quality of my water (Reverse Osmosis system!), turning my phone off at 8 pm ('You no call me after 8!' LOL), getting custom bloodwork done so I know EXACTLY what my body needs, getting custom vitamins designed for my body, getting IV flushes every month, fasting from social media for certain periods every quarter, prayer, recopying the Bible for the second time, playing my strings and cooking...because it relaxes me. Haven't had personal social media in over 5 years. Only for my business. My face is barely ever visible there. One of the best QUALITY things you could EVER do for yourself is to get your OWN custom bloodwork done independent of your doctor. Just doing it once! You will get a microscopic view of why you have certain irregularities and then start crafting an eating regimen to address what you find. Best thing ever! (You will get tired of the Doc telling you there's nothing wrong with you, and you know better. Be your own doctor.) Make self-care count! Don't waste on how things LOOK, what's going on under the HOOD?

I'm really interested in personal finance. My friends and coworkers do not hesitate to use a credit card to finance everything (and I mean from groceries to clothes to trips abroad). They don't even know what an emergency fund is. My family has taught me to be frugal and I couldn't be more thankful for them. There's literally no better time than now to apply saving techniques. Like you, I'm exhausted of these trends. Everyone aspires to have the same holiday, clothes, makeup look, and home. No personality at all.

I love quiet luxury. No bling bling, just very decent shapes and good quality. A matter of taste and good for the environment because quiet luxury products will last for many, many years.

Here's how I know there is a lot of puffery in this genre. Because...when you find something that WORKS, why would you CHANGE it? Why? OK, I'll give the following possible reasons... 1) There may be acute moments of change, but that doesn't happen every year. Not even every year or month. For instance, skin changing in pregnancy or menopause. 2) A company changes the formula of a product and it no longer works. So you have to search for another solution to replace it. I have 1-3 influencers I watch RELIGIOUSLY because they have some of the same skin concerns I do, and their suggestions have REALLY worked. Other items? Gifted to me. I have a play daughter who works in retail and gives me Ole Henriksen, Sisley and Clarins samples on the REGULAR! I don't have to pay for it. I have to replenish skin care MAYBE once a year, that's how long it all lasts. When Covid hit, and I wasn't in the polluted air every day? It REALLY saved using products! I am JUST NOW, in 2024, replenishing a few things. 7 skin care brands, 19 items. I only use 4 every day. The others are used in those acute cases of need. Usually acne breakouts when cycling or cleansing. So they last 4-EVER! Especially since I was given a cosmetic fridge! 3 makeup brands, 4 items I use every day. These items work. ALL.THE.TIME. So I don't need to keep buying! The ONLY thing that I constantly buy is perfume...because perfumes are actually unique and I wear them every day...so yes, I run out. I watch hauls and such for inspiration and background noise while doing my skin care or cleaning. I was surprised to find out how many other ladies do the same. Let me re-emphasize, if it gets really hot where you are? A cosmetic fridge will be AWESOME for preserving your more expensive skincare. You don't want an $80 cream that should last a year going bad in one hot season. Just a thought.

I’m not american, and while I know my country has its own problems with racism that are really really terrible the way white americans treat plantations is still shocking to me. Why are they wedding venues?? It’s sick. There’s literally organisations dedicated to American history, and particularly the history of slavery, who are willing to help people handle these historical sites appropriately. They can go to those people and get help. There’s people who work trying to help African Americans find their ancestry, I’m sure they’d appreciate having access to those sites so they can hopefully find more info to help people. And I imagine some of those descendants might like input into what happens to these places! Or maybe a cut of some of that “generational wealth”. What you don’t do is turn it into a wedding venue or airbnb, how do they sleep at night??

My understanding of "quiet luxury" is investing in quality items that will last for years and usually have a more "classic" style. The items don't need to be expensive (though it will be more expensive than your average Target shirt), but they do need to be of a quality that will look good for years to come. My personal style and mentality means my clothes fit into this category but it is because I now have quality item I will own for the next 10yrs that I enjoy wearing, not because it is the "trendy" thing.

This is very interesting and I’ve enjoyed the video, but I don’t share the perspective. Literally everything we wear is with the objective to impress other people. Dressing in simplistic good quality clothing is not about wanting to be white, but feeling comfortable and classy without being flashy.

Most of my clothes are 2nd hand. I am trying, to be myself. If that's what a certain, possibly rich man likes and if I like the certain man, we will see. - But what do I know? I am living from paycheck to paycheck. That is something, I am changing. The fact, that I am without a rich man, may change, if he can show me, that he will not take away my freedom, because my freedom and my inner peace are mostly important.

I would not say that old money/quiet luxury is by any means positive trend, but I noticed at least one positive effect, which is ppl realizing that there is actual worth in buying more valuable clothes with better quality and timeless style instead burring yourself in Shein. 32 year old millennial here 👋🏼 I think it’s a bit much to say “tik tok is going to be the downfall of civilization/society.” IMO - Like everything else, tik tok is a trend. Social media app popularity ebbs and flows. I don’t think it’s fair to say “back in my day we logged into AOL or MSN Messenger or MySpace or (insert app/website here) to find like minded people and to communicate with our friends unlike today’s generation who are only on tik tok to curate an aesthetic…” Because that is pretty much what Gen x and baby boomers said to us millennials: “back in my day we went to the mall or (insert location here) to find like minded people and to communicate with our friends.” Trends have always been and will always be a thing - you know this very well. IMO, the only thing that’s changing is the speed in which trends rise and fall. Not saying that fast fashion and surgical trends are not harmful in myriad ways, but I just don’t think it’s fair to be so hard on Gen Z and what they’re into. As a kid 10 years younger than Britney Spears back in the early 2000s, I was obsessed with dressing like her and looking like her (and similar celebrities) well into the 2010s. She was my goal ✨aesthetic. ✨ I even wanted brown contacts so I could look like her as close as possible. Kids are always gonna unhealthily follow celebs and trends until the end of time. I don’t think it’s that deep or serious. What IS serious is when teens/people in general start having irreversible surgeries like buccal fat removal to look like someone they’re not. But that has been a problem for as long as cosmetic plastic surgery has been prevalent. Bottom line, people are gonna want to copy other people and they’re always gonna want to be someone they’re not. And Gen Z is gonna go through their weird phases like the rest of us did - it’s a rite of passage. But yeah. Quit romanticizing slaves quarters you fuckin weirdos. Good grief. Girl, I love your channel and commentary, but I disagree about "old money" being first and foremost a "white" style. It is coming from England and from elsewhere in Europe, where monarchies ruled (and rule). In these countries 99,9% of the population was white as a chalk back in the day, so "old money" is bound to look inherently very white. But it is not "white" - it is by the rich, for the rich - it is exclusion by social class - not necessarily race. Let's not forget that these ruling classes have made their money (and still do make) off of OUR backs - everyone who was not or is not belonging to a powerful, rich family - not of black peoples' especially. So, one should not observe the situation through the race of these rich people only. The aesthetic is definitely not something of my country Finland, for example, nor is it affordable for a normal Finn. And we are pretty much 100 % white here in the North.

One thing that never crossed my mind but makes total sense is that old money is basically white aesthetic. It doesn't include old money from people of colour. Because our ancestors who had money, they wore intricate embroidered designs, colors, jewellerys. Plus it doesn't make sense to look like you come from money, when you're broke af. The only good thing about this trend is to use it as inspiration, like any other trends.

Well, it is white successors of wealthy slaves owners (or those who rebelled against slave ownership and helped abolish it) who love neutrals, but it is Indian, Asian, Arab and African slave traders and owner's successors who love other aesthetics- bright colours, silks, logos, gold. You can always find an ex slave trader, owners, or exploitation heis style for your own liking if you search based on such parameter. I definitely agree that the “quiet luxury” trend is nonsense. Any person that was raised with class was taught that you don’t wear loud prints to show off your wealth so this isn’t technically a trend for wealth, it’s a trend to exclude non-classy people. Which in some senses is good because it’s taking us away from the trashy reality tv stars that have dominated pop culture for the past decade, however it does scream “whites only”. Also, I do have to point out that those “plantation homes” are actually old Indian homes that were stolen when the British, French, Portuguese and Spanish arrived in America. They are not actually slave plantations but Indian mansions. My Indian ancestors didn’t live in teepees, they had land, beautiful architecture, castles, pyramids, empires and kingdoms. That was all destroyed in the 1600-1800s when everything was flooded or burned down, they were removed from their lands, their homes stolen and they were forced into slavery. The history of America is wholly incorrect. Just putting that out there.
