We had one in our last residence. It was awesome. We'd wait til Bout 9pm, open all the windows, and in 20 minutes the entire house was crisp and cool. Saved us a bunch on AC costs.

If you were in Hellifornia where a 1,000sq ft well insulated apartment gets $400 electricity bills keeping the thermostat at 81, you'd realize a large house electrical savings your first bill, so much so you'd throw a party with the $600 you saved off of a normal $800-$1,200 bill which is typical house bill for CA in the summer. I installed whole house fans in 3 houses in CA because the PG&E bills were so horrific. They've become much more horrific since PG&E was directly responsible for burning down 10+ towns and CA allowing them to constantly raise their rates. You can literally buy a Quiet Cool with the savings off one bill... Quiet Cool wasn't around for my first 2 homes. I had the biggest fan I could find and stuck it in the ceiling. It sounded like a jet plane but I absolutely did not care as all of that amazing cool night air came in and I knew it was blowing the 130+ degree heat out of my attic.

What about using filtered fresh air returns with some check flaps? Would it be able to pull enough to draw through the fresh air foundation vents?

My question is does it drawn in a lot of dust into the house have you noticed if you need to clean more often?
@Myksgarage

No that hasn't been a problem. We will only use it when the air outside is clean. If it's a dusty day, we won't use it.

I own one of these and absolutely love it. I've had it for probably 10 years now. My question is the following. Looking to install this for someone else, They have a two-story house and the attic is such that I can possibly put this fan on the first floor. Do you see any issues with installing the fan on the first floor? Seems to me it shouldn't really matter. As long as at least one window's open it will pull air from wherever that open window is. Thank you!
@Myksgarage
@Myksgarage 24 күн бұрын
Yeah I would say there is no problem with Installing it on the first floor, if you open a window up on the 2nd floor, it easily pull air through the window.

Heat rises. It will work best if you pull the air out of the upper floor.

Don't buy the Energy Saver 2 speed version (Green) sold to home owners featured in this video. Sold without controls and with only 10 year warranty. You want the Stealth Pro x 3 speed model (Black) with 15 year warranty.. These models are sold to contractors only. Most contractors can install these models with RF Remote for around the same price you will pay retail on an ES model. Also, you can buy an extra remote without buying 2 complete remotes. This will enable you control the fan from bed or upstairs and down.

I have a question. I read that it's recommended to pair an attic fan with the quiet cool fan. My understanding is, an attic fan will kick on automatically when the attic gets super hot, and this is a good compliment to the quiet cool fan. Any feedback would be welcomed.
@Myksgarage
@Myksgarage Ай бұрын
Yeah that makes sense to me, it would help exhaust the hot air from the attic and that is a big cause of heat in the house

@Myksgarage Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. I live in Southern California. Gets pretty hot during July, August, and September. If you don't mind me asking, what part of the country do you reside in where you didn't run it during July and August ?

Have a quick question hopefully you could answer so if I have my windows closed, and my house is warm or hot and I turn on the quiet fan. It won’t suck up the air. The windows have to be that kind of doesn’t make sense. I understand the part of having the windows open, but I think that even if your windows are closed, it would still suck up air Into the attic
@Myksgarage
@Myksgarage 2 ай бұрын
Be sure to subscribe to my channel, I'll do a video on this topic in a couple of weeks. The short answer is this fan is so powerful it will still suck air from the outside, like through door seals, from the fireplace or other small openings and will create a negative pressure. So you don't want to run it if your doors or windows are closed

Air has to come from somewhere. If you are removing hot air from your living space, then that air has to be replaced with something. You are wanting to remove hot air so that cool air can take its place. That air is coming from outside, but it needs a way in (Door, window, chimney, etc.) Now, unless your house is perfectly sealed then the fan will still draw air in from all the nooks and crannies that arent airtight, but this is not good for 2 reasons. If you are pulling moist air in through small gaps in the home, then you can be subjecting yourself to possible mold/mildew problems down the road. Also then fans motor relies on the air it moves to be able to cool itself and keep it running optimally. If you choke off the air supply by having your windows and door closed, then the motor will get hotter than it should and decrease the life of the motor.

My current house has a similar unit, but it's very noisy because the fans are right at the grill. This setup is better. ONE CAUTION: Make sure you have enough outlet for the air, otherwise you will pressurize your attic which may push hot & dusty attic air down into your living space.

So what kind of exhaust vents do you need in the attic?

One factor to consider with this approach is how well an attic and vent it's own air. If not that well, then pushing house air into it with the WHF will tend to make the attic behave like a balloon - not as efficient at evacuating house into it, because there's no where for it to go once it gets to the attic. If the attic has good ventilation, then a discharge into it would achieve one of the intended secondary goals, of lowering the attic temperature. If it doesn't, then I'd think you could add an attic fan. Or as a previous comment suggested, have the WHF discharge directly out a gable vent. It seems like it would would be relatively simple for the controller to have an option for temperature-based control: have a temperature sensor outside the house, one inside, and the a controller where you could set the delta (ie. outside needs to be > 10 degrees cooler), that would automatically turn on the fan. You'd want this as an option, as if that was met, but you didn't open your windows, you'd be evacuating that air into the attic, with no replacement.
@Myksgarage

Yes, figuring out how well you are attic is ventilated is a key component to the system. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

These don't make sense to me when used this way if you a drawing air from inside the house some of that air will have moisture so any vapor barrier would be useless. For me you would need two systems the whole house fan should vent straight out of the gable end thus keeping the any integrity of any vapor barrier and exhausting warm moist air straight out. The second system should be purely to cool the loft space as heat can build up here very quickly and radiate down into the living space. The second system has more benefit IMO as no matter how how it is outside the loft space will be hotter unless it is well thermally insulated.

I’m curious about this issue too, why not just vent directly outside? A lot of attics are poorly ventilated and I would think you are adding a massive amount more dust and particulates over time. Yes, you do get some attic cooling but that as long as you are insulated well should not matter and you avoid another exterior hole.

My home is from the 1940s here in north texas. Still has the ancient attic fan up in the attic that’s obviously no longer in use but back then thats what they had available to cool the home. Anywho Yeah i have a new one in my home. During spring and fall i rarely use the AC and the energy savings from those months are definitely worth it. But yeah obviously not going to pump nighttime 110 degree air into my home in the middle of summer lol
