Quilt As You Go: Attaching the Blocks with Sashing. There are many different methods of quilt as you go. In this tutorial, I teach you how to attach your quilted blocks using sashing strips. This is the most common method of quilt as you go.
I like to use my machines decorative stitches when I use the quilt as you go method. I feel like it gives my quilts more character than when I do traditional quilting.
In this tutorial I cut my front strip 1" and my back strip at 2". I ironed the 2" strip in half. That is a common practice for using strips using the quilt as you go method, and I honestly can't tell you why. My guess is that it gives more stability and strength to the quilt. I hope you enjoy this method of quilting.
Crafting made fun and easy! Join me as I teach you how to make beautiful crafts and quilts using different techniques.
I get a lot of questions regarding the sewing machine that I am using. The machine that I am using is a Janome 9400 QCP.

Good information. When you square your blocks make the star block points at least 1/4 in from the edge, otherwise you lose the point on your stars when you sew them together.

Great tutorial! For 2" [finished] sashing, cut 2 1/2" for the front and 4 1/2" [folded] for the back. This creates a wider space on the back, so cut a strip of batting for the inside. Then sew the seam closed by machine or by hand,, if you want it to be invisible.

Your hair looks fantastic. I love the way the quilt is coming together. Thank you and all for the prayers. When the surgeon injected the alcohol the heart attack was so painful I passed out. The second time he brought me back to, I wanted to punch him in the face. LOL! It didn't really hurt anymore and it was so peaceful before he brought me back. But the surgery was a great success. I can already breathe easier and no longer have pain or fluttering in my chest. For well over 30 years I had been told it was mitral valve prolapse, when it never was that. I watched your last video before this one also but didn't comment. I'm just beginning to get my strength back up and will be starting physical therapy as soon as the virus takes a break again. Take care and see you soon. 💗😊💗

Hello! I really like the way you do your QAYG. I've see lots of videos, but don't like how they look. Yours look great and have inspired me to try QAYG with your method. What size squares did you use? I'm thinking of 9 or 10 inch finished blocks. When possible, I'd always sew the backing first and then the front sashing strips. That way your 'odd' extra line of stitching will always be on the back and therefore less noticeable.

Rosalee- No. The strips are not as thick. The strip is just a single piece of fabric, with the exception of the 2" strip which is ironed in half. The batting should butt up together with the blocks and the rows to make the thickness for the sashing. I hope that makes sense. 😊

Not sure if anyone has asked, but where to start from top block down or from left to right block to joining blocks?

Here is an older video that I did showing how to attach the row on a large quilt. It is a much older video, so I will apologize in advance for the quality. It shows you how to attach the rows and I am using a Singer domestic sewing machine. 😊 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rOBzf8yU2s2Vj4E.html

What is a walking foot
@MelanieCravens
@MelanieCravens 2 жыл бұрын
Terry, it is a special foot for your sewing machine that moves the top and bottom fabric evenly together...it 'walks' .Most regular sewing machine feet tend to move one layer faster than the others.

I would rather put the folded strip on the front, so that the sew-down line is in the back.

I have done that before as well. I like that method as well.
