Guest Coleen Barnhardt started quilting fifteen months ago, wanting to get good at multiple quilting designs as quickly as possible. She used her sketchbook for practice before perfecting that practice on the longarm quilting machine, sometimes using rulers to aid in her learning process When a doodle quilt has been fully quilted, the next step is to color it in. Coleen demonstrates how she uses different shades of paint with an extender to blend the colors right on the quilt, explaining why she uses the type of paint, paintbrushes, and double-layers of Hobbs batting she uses. Plus, see finished examples of Coleen's Doodle Quilts. In the Short Takes! on Longarm quilting, Marie Eldredge shows how black yarn applied with the couching foot can lend visual emphasis to quilting designs.
