Craft in America

www.craftinamerica.org. Victoria Findlay Wolfe has a fine art degree in painting but found her life’s passion in quilt making. Now a New York-based International Award-Winning quilter, fabric designer, teacher, author and lecturer, Findlay Wolfe is known for making quilts that look difficult to make, then teaching quilters to make them. Each quilt Findlay Wolfe makes pushes boundaries, supporting her premise that creativity requires risk.
Learn about contemporary quilters from diverse traditions as we celebrate the important role quilts have played in our country's story. Featuring Susan Hudson, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, Michael A. Cummings, Judith Content, the International Quilt Museum, and special guest Ken Burns. PBS premiere December 27, 2019 (check local listings).

My art teacher said the same thing, but like you, I went right back and made another one. Art is in the beholder and it’s creater.

Wow Virginia just said out loud my definition of art! “If you make it it is art!” I really don’t like the word CRAFT! It has morphed into ‘CRAFTS’ which to me does not allow for diverse media to be used in or recognized as art! Kids today ‘make crafts’ they don’t do art. It waters down the importance of art in society. My skill was watered down because my sister took an art class in high school & won an award for a painting. I like more 3D media so when I entered a textile and was granted a lesser award it was not recognized. It was said she was an artist but I just liked doing it. No recognition for me. Even recently my aunt saw me drawing along with her l son and adult grandchildren and compared my loose style with their tight anime and degraded my drawing. I hate this! By the way my sister hasn’t picked up a paint brush in over 40 years!
