• J. Prince Talks Drake ... -~-
In this week's Breakdown, we examine the rivalry between Prince and Michael Jackson. Many know there was tension, but it's deeper than most think. We speak exclusively with Quincy Jones on the relationship between these two fallen icons. He reveals Prince's nickname for Michael, as well as the night he nearly ran over the King Of Pop. Jones also provides incredible insight into what it takes to create an album as transformative as Thriller.

Jimmy Jam said in an interview after Prince death that he and Terry Lewis went to MJ's house to discuss an album and MJ kept replaying the video over and over again of Prince falling off the stage and laughing. He also mentioned Prince sent MJ a box/gift and he told Latoya, this guy's crazy! He sent me a bunch of voodoo. I'm never talking to him again. I think it all started when MJ went to studio to see Prince and Prince beat him in ping pong and laughed at him and MJ got embarrassed. There was something there.

Incorrect. In Prince's mind no. But Michael thought Prince was trying to put a hex on him when Prince gave him a gift. The reason why Michael wanted O2 arena shows was because Prince did 21 shows (I think) and Michael wanted to do more. And you know what happened then.

If you really think about it, Prince was in a genre all on his own. He may have written songs for other artists but he almost NEVER did any collaborations. This made him one of the most, if not THE most unique stand-alone artist in modern music history. Paved his own lane throughout his career. He always gave praise to other musicians that he digged (including MJ I’m sure). But his originality was always unadulterated and his inspirations were always internal. Won’t be another like him for a long time.

Or perhaps, Prince may have thought the music industry was out to KILL him NEXT, so he was trying to PROTECT himself, by going into hiding. You see FIRST, Tupac was KILLED, and then Tupac's BIGGEST rivalry being 'Biggie Smalls' was KILLED less than 6 months LATER, or within the year. TOO 'SUSPECT' on BOTH artists. But, the REAL TRUTH will NEVER really all the way come out. Just only bits and pieces, to KEEP it like a conspiracy theory, because TOO MANY lives are involved, and oaths have been given.

Robin Song, What does that have to do with Prince being more musically talented than Michael? You just touched up on something very sensitive. It is no secret to the world that it was Michael that had to face the law twice for his involvement with boys. Whether he actually did anything or not, it was his name involved in that type of sexual behavior, not Prince. The topic is who is more musically talented, not their personal life.

He created music in his head just like Prince he created melodies to his music just like prince and sung the shit out of every song just like prince. So saying he was only after money is biased considering he gave up most of it up every chance he got and considering when he could've sold out and let the record company rip everybody he grew up with off he was one of the first to speak out got set up , legacy trashed through the mud and died because of it also just like prince.

So be a be a good prince fan and have enough faith in your artist to know he was great without tearing down others accomplishments the only thing mj had help on was producing which he also did half of he wrote most of his hits and composed 98% of them he was the ultimate composer he was known to musicians as the one who can't play music but can tell you exactly what he wanted each note to sound like by ear. Prince was far superior musician but just because he decided to do everything himself doesn't take away from mjs talent he just decided to put his foot in everything performance wise not just the music. People like to say mj was a trend follower well why couldn't he follow the trend he created in the first place music videos, the sound of music ,the way pop was sung in general was changed by mj now every pop song out there is someone trying to repeat what mj created in his music. So in his later years he had every right to update his sound considering that sound was created and influenced by him in the first place. Prince and mj were people who created history. You can't have one without the other period. So to correct you one was a musical prodigy and one was the greatest entertainer \musical genius who ever lived. Also like to add its debatable mj was a better song writer "they don't really care about us" wipes out everything prince ever wrote. Plus Stranger In mascow.

Quincy instigated a beef between them. He used to play Prince albums for MJ to get him going. He said he brought the 1999 album to MJ and kept gushing on and on about it, trying to get MJ's juices flowing. Quincy was angry at Prince later for skipping We Are The World and just contributing a song to the album instead. Prince didn't wanna sing but said he'd play guitar instead. Quincy was pissed. I think Quincy had a secret desire to produce an album for Prince. He once said Prince was a genius but he thinks he works too hard doing everything. Writing, producing, composing, arranging and performing everything himself. Quincy said Prince was taking a bit too much on his shoulders. I'll bet he would've like to see HIS name on a Prince album.

You have a point, Quincy just wanted to be the only one to produce those two. Prince didnt need him to produce a damn thing for him. Michael was smart to leave Quincy alone also. i'm so dissapointed with quincy for airing not just Michael and Prince's business after they passed , but in the interview he was just throwing everyone under the bridge, it reminded me of Crazy Kanye!!!

Prince's legacy is great as it is. Prince is a university when it comes 2 music. U can study & learn something new each time u listen. However, let's not 4get that there's so much music in his vault. It's already said that he has enough material in the vault that an album can be released each year 4 an entire CENTURY. There's no telling who he may have collaborated with. 4 the record, he collaborated w/ Eve on "Hot Wit U", Pharrell on "Greatest Romance Ever Sold (remix), Kendrick LaMar on "PretzelBodyLogic (remix) & there's a live version of him & Kendrick as well. He collaborated w/ Gwen Stefani on "So Far, So Pleased". U gotta dig deep because there is a lot of material he released while alive that many people have 2 catch up on.

Quincy makes Gene Simmons look like a choir boy here. It's so easy to talk junk when the other person is not alive to defend himself - I've seen Prince play Michael Jackson medleys as a tribute to him after he passed in 2009. "It always hurts to lose people you love" is what Prince was quoted as saying following Michael's passing, he left the past in the past and stayed positive. He had many opportunities to slam Michael in the media during his scandals and never took the bait. Why can't Quincy reciprocate the respect? Has he said ANYTHING positive about Prince here? This is shameful and classless in my humble opinion, Prince as short as he was, was the bigger man after all.

I love the music of Prince. But Quincy Jones has told a different variation of the story regarding Prince and MJ. Originally he said Prince said to them "You don't need me for this, it'll be a hit without me"(regarding "Bad").As for Prince being offended by the whole "You're Butt Is Mine" lyric. I'd like to think Prince was joking with Chris Rock and the media. This is the same guy who wrote "Darling Nikki", "Rasberry Beret", "Little Red Corvette", "Get Off", "Sexy MF", "Cream", "Peach", "Do Me Baby", and "Soft and Wet". Along with the whole "Sugar Walls" song he wrote for Sheena Easton. So I sincerely and highly doubt he'd be offended by that lyric. Overall I think it was just a friendly competition between the two. Both are iconic, contributed massive and legendary status to the world of music, videos, fashion, and pop culture in general. They both literally personified the 80's along with Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and even Weird Al. In the end there shouldn't be any comparison. They were both amazing artists and I love them both equally. Even saw Michael Jackson live during his World Dangerous Tour when living in Germany. The real tragedy is we never got to see MJ and Prince do a collaboration musically.

Prince did need others. He didn't do everything by himself. That was a myth. Just like the myth that he played 27 instruments. He played 5 and a MOOG. Prince worked with other musicians and often took credit for their contributions. He had a lot of help. Michael Jackson always collaborated but he wrote several hits by himself. Being a person who does it all is not such a big deal. All of the greats had songs written for them, produced by others and written by others from Frank Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles and even Madonna. Sometimes, the songs weren't even theirs. Sometimes, they lifted songs and passed them off as their own. Prince was sued by his own sister for U Got The Look lyrics and used a few of his dad's songs for Purple Rain and Michael was notorious for borrowing pieces of other's music for his own, which you can hear in songs like Billie Jean and Wanna Be Startin' Something.

Is just like watching Michael with the voice of Barry White lol I think Michael nailed on that aspect. Then again, I think it was Prince who started with the make up. Make up was a thing of the 80's. I think if Prince wouldn't have been so threaten and so much to want to do it all by himself, they would've been good friends, because deep inside they both admired each other.

In my opinion, Michael Jackson and Prince are the biggest icons in music history. Ironically, they were the same age, both were Black men, both were from the midwest of the U.S. and both idolized James Brown. Yet, despite those similarities, they couldn't have been more different as musicians and as people. Still, I think it would've been wonderful had the 2 of them had been able to collaborate at least once! Michael Jackson was on the music scene long before Prince. If there hadn't been a Michael Jackson there may have never been a Prince. I believe underneath Prince's spirit of competitiveness lay some insecurity and even jealousy. Had he really wanted to collaborate with Michael, he could've done so on a song other than Bad. It's unfortunate that he chose not to. To date, Michael Jackson remains the top-selling solo artist in the world and was the world's greatest entertainer. He performed before more audiences and received more awards than anyone else in music history. Prince, however, was the greatest musician and most prolific songwriter/composer of ANY era!!!! He was also a dynamic entertainer and he created enough music that will last well into the next millennium. These 2 musicians were the BEST in music history and we'll never see the likes of either of them again!!! They were both musical geniuses that we were fortunate to enjoy simultaneously. I am most grateful to have been influenced by them both and I am a die-hard fan of both!! No one will ever surpass them!!! They are the GREATEST musicians of all time!!!!!

Great video, I love your wall images. I don't see Rakim. What opinion, what you said here were facts. Great ones at that. Do you ever cover any GO GO?

Thank you! I haven't covered much Go Go honestly. We don't have Ra on the wall either. Even writing that sentence feels blasphemous.

Great video 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 i personally feel prince didnt need to do many collaborations because he already had to many ideas in his head spinning around to deal with anyhow....i mean they should have called him “the show” or better yet “the whole f’n show” because he was incredible on stage.

I have been a Prince and MJ fan since Prince dropped his first album "For you" and since the Jackson 5 dropped their 2nd album "ABC". They're both phenomenal artist in their own right. Prince's career speaks for itself and his legacy will be known for what is was. He will always be knows as Royal Badness. MJ's career also speaks for itself , NO one will ever come close to his dance moves and videos (often imitated but never duplicated) he will always be know as the King of Pop. Both artist have pave the way for future artist. Prince and MJ left this world to soon but, they will never be forgotten.

Prince was a classically trained and extremely strict with his discipline... None of the so called modern day musical icons that Justin mentioned are anywhere near the Musical Mindset of someone like Prince... his legacy is best exactly as it is now.

Jimmy J : I have inside connection with Prince, I knew him and I know some of his band mates. I am a musician who has had the opportunity to have played with Prince. He was not classically trained! His talent was natural.

Considering Quincy and Michael's close relationship, I don't believe you can consider Quincy an unbiased source of information on this rivalry. Of course he's going to paint Prince as the villain.

Don’t believe Quincy. He probably hated. Prince because he couldn’t make any money off of him. Prince was all talent on his own, no need for producers and all that crap. I will forever refer to MJ as Camille 😂
