QUIT Your RA/TA On Campus Jobs And Do This. I am going to share two key reasons in this video.
** EXCEPTIONS **
1. If RA/TA helps you to build skill sets for industry which you dream to work in, definitely do them.
E.g If you are TA for a web development class where you have to learn MERN stack , definitely go for it.
** Disclaimer **
- Before you take this advice, STOP ! please take out time to evaluate and analyze if it applies to your situation and then take the decision which is best for you.
- In this video, I have shared my perspective which stems from my personal experience of getting and multiple RAs and TAs in the past.
- If you do not agree with me, I respect your opinion and would love to hear it.

Just my perspective... Being an RA involves working under professors on different projects (improves your technical skills), helping him in lab work (you gain hands-on work) , doing brief literature study (going through tons of research papers - which in term improves your knowledge in your domain), drafting research papers. All this not only helps you gain knowledge, but this experience can help you in getting internships between semesters gaps. Also, working under professor, he can recommend you to his network (LORs) for an internship position or a full-time job. Also, working as RA in same domain will help you strengthen your acads too. One more advantage as an RA, sometimes you get subject waiver along with stipend, so assuming you get 60-100% tution fees waived off, you can use stipend for your accommodation, food and other stuff. Thus, you drastically reduce your MS expenses. On the other hand, working in a cafe or library, you would be involve more in physical work. You may get physically exhausted at the end of the day. Also, since this job may not help you tuition fee waiver, you have to balance between tuition fee, accommodation, food and your other expenses. For students looking forward to work in research or core-job, RA/TA >> other jobs. It's not just about investing your time, but also if that helps you gain something which will help you in future (not just money).

I totally agreed with you, I never tried to explore TA/RA jobs, I focused on getting a good Internship, I covered almost all my tuition fee through my internship, apart from that, I easily got calls for full-time because of an internship in a good company.

It’s a perspective… and very strong on your part to discourage people who follow you. Being an RA and TA is chill as you already have taken up the courses … it helps you handle questions from students you get prepared about questions on your subject and it helps you a lot in your job search a search and develop dialogue delivery and presenting your ideas to people clearly. It is a perspective which you should allow people to chose not impose as a real experience..desk job are physically draining you end up coming back and sleeping

@@nitinkumargove You are doing a lot of good work trust me you are doing a good job in educating people to come to pursue there dreams but if we feed there minds with something as a hard no they will never try some people might benefit from desk jobs and some from the TA and RA. For eg I benefited a lot from my TA as I was teaching algorithm to students and faced 100 questions per week on it and it really helped in interviews. What’s unique about studying in us is that there is the freedom to choose and try things and learn from failure but if people take words from seniors as the ground truth then there doors to ever exploring let say TA and RA world is closed in there minds before they even try. All the best.

5:15 Hey Nitin. 1. So what are things that will prepare me for job, while in the program - which on-campus jobs would be more relevant for me to get a better industry role? 2. Which kind of on-campus jobs will instil the skills which are needed for the industry? (For someone who is primarily coming for working in the industry and get that experience🙋🏻‍♀️)

I think this video is misleading and revolves around single person's perspective. As he said in the video, they expect a lot from Master's student. If you are taking a TA/RA job, you should already have most of the required skills but it's not necessary, obviously you'll pick new skills eventually. How will you get a job if you don't have minimum skillset for it? Also, from my personal experience, I learned a lot of new things and I know a lot of other people who did as well. It's totally worth it. It's the education system in our country which promotes these kind of reviews. Rather than promoting other "simple" jobs, I would suggest developing a better time management strategy. If you want to learn and grow, take the challenge!

Hello Kanak, thank you for sharing your views. I do want to reinstate that the views shared in this video are my own & stem from my own experiences. I dont think they are misleading on any front. One key factor to consider is what skills you are building through RA/TA jobs and how are those skills required / used in corporate setting ? If the skill that you will get through RA TA can be built with much lesser effort, would it still makes sense to go for RA TA jobs ? Personally the way I think about this is that I have two key resources Time and Energy. I want to make sure how can I make the most on the these investments. The fundamental point in this video which I have tried to highlight is that the ROI from RA/TA jobs is way lesser compared to other jobs. But thank you for sharing your opinion. I really appreciate it, brother !

@@nitinkumargove I totally respect your view here. What you are saying is also not wrong. I should definitely take my words back. But I do believe that we can definitely learn new things with these jobs. For instance, I was TA for a react native class. I had prior experience so I got the job but I literally learned quite a few new things. I think it depends a lot on what kind of TA/RA are you getting. How it aligns with your interest. Indeed there's no straight line to divide it. I had TA/RA in all 4 semesters and even the RA experience sometimes help me in corporate life. Anyway, I really appreciate your efforts here. Hope you'll include this point in future videos to help out students.

Getting a TA, Ra job has become very easy these days, since professors outsource this work to their current TAs, RAs, to choose the incoming ones. Some professors have favorites, some really tax the TA with the most menial work. So it all depends on the professor. I agree this video is somewhat misleading, however, some realities are that TA RA jobs do not really add to your skillset, since they are already studying 3 subjects at that time, and this extra responsibility totally counts as a new subject. Unfortunately, there are TA jobs where you have to learn about the subject all over again. I had a pathetic experience, a professor's TA has zero knowledge about the subject, she never came to the class, and never graded the assignments. To this day, I wonder why was she even there? Favoritism maybe?

@@nitinkumargove I worked as RA and TA both in my masters, it helped me get an internship and a full time job, I still have a good relation with the professor, that is important for future as well if I decide to go for PhD or in the industry, his name holds enough value. I agree that it would require more time but some professors pay you for that if they know it needs more time but if we lack skill and need more time we should put in hours, I would definitely put in hours where it can help me in the future as it is from your own field rather than understanding how a pizza joint work, hours you put in RA, will definitely help you any time in the future, I agree some desk jobs are lucrative but not all jobs gives you free time, food joint hours drains you for 4 hours and you will have to take rest after that plus pay is also better in RA jobs usually
