It would if this was actually Rob's own thoughts. If you watch his eyes he's pretty clearly reading it all off a prompt. It's David using another person to point out his flaws so his self depreciation doesn't become contradictory. I still love it though

for anyone wondering, the scottish language is pronounce ga-lick, the irish language is pronounced gay-lick. webb had it right, he was just talking about a different language than most people thought

This is something that gets said a lot, but i've known enough native speakers to refer to it as [gay-lick] when speaking english. varies a bit by island (Only ever known long à used in gaelic ofc, but i imagine there is some regional variation even there that i'm just not familiar with).

john finnemore writes all of these, he probably wrote robert webb's lines too. he also wrote most of their mitchell and webb stuff. you can tell which sketches are by him from their liberal use of the word costermonger

I'm pretty sure it was written by Rob - he's an English major and actually as smart as David if you listen to him out of character (like in interviews and such), so it really seems like something that he would think about language.

You're right of course, specifically the variety I speak is Mandarin (and a little Cantonese) but a great degree of the grammar and syntax across all the Chinese varieties is quite similar, much like the descendants of latin all share similar grammar, so the point still stands.

@xTunafishx I too think he is very good. Love the way he talks and I think he is great as an actor for comedy as well as for drama. Maybe he is underappreciated because he is not in as many programs as David is, perhaps because he has less time, having a wife and children. Anyway, they are great together.

The question of whether to try to preserve a language should factor in how much decent literature there is in that language, more than anything. Losing the ability to apprehend the subtleties of a text is no small matter.

Yeah, true. While investing large amounts of money towards something like adding a translation to every road sign might be wasteful (unless the language use is increasing/has a significant pop. in a region) but if there are existing facilities(e.g Gaelic speaking schools), there's no reason to cut funding from them. The meaning behind a lot of words is often lost when borrowed(not in all cases).Languages shape attitudes and perception. We limit ourselves in other less obvious ways w/o variation.

So a common language is needed. I don't see why other perfectly functional languages should die in order for it to happen. Like you said, most Welsh people can speak English, for example. They shouldn't have to drop their native tongue for progress. That sounds like a step back. Languages aren't purely for communication. They open up new possibilities for expression(art/music) and can create different feelings in the speaker. A lot of people prefer the secrecy of an alt. language too. e.g Shelta

Apparently Webb's criticism hit the mark because the Gaelic language video has been made private in February or March of 2023.

@m4g35l4y4r Not really. They're both "gale-ick" if you're speaking in English, but in their own languages the Scottish one is Gàidhlig (which is pronounced "gahl-ick") and the Irish is Gaeilge (with a pronunciation that depends on where in ireland you're from, but is most commonly "gwil-geh").

@TheLordSod Not quite correct, rather bizarrely there is a small population of native Welsh speakers living in the far southern reaches of Argentina. And in answer to your statement regarding the benefits of a new pan-lingua-franca, I would refer you to my friend the Babelfish. In the words of Douglas Adams; "by removing all barriers of communication between all races and civilisations, it has caused more and bloodier wars than any thing else in the Universe."
