To dispel the myth: Quokkas do not yeet their babies at predators. They can't throw anything with those cute little arms. The mother's pouch will automatically loosen and expel her joey when threatened, so she can run away. In a classic case of nature's ruthless practicality, when fertilized, a mother quokka will usually have two embryos: one which develops into a joey, the other which is literally kept as a spare in case this sort of thing happens. So first, it's not like quokkas have much of a choice since this is an automatic response with a built in safety. Second, Nature firmly believes in the "heir and a spare" philosophy of reproduction.

I think its a bit more complex than that. They are tiny prey animals, if they expelled their joeys every time the mother felt threatened they would not have any for long. It would only happen in the worst circumstance. And definitely but there are other reasons for the embryonic diapause in macropods. If a joey dies during a drought (common in aus) the mother will be able to immediately have one when the drought breaks. And Idk about quokkas but most macropods take care of 2 joeys in a good season. 1 joey will leave the pouch and become 'at foot' though still suckling and another will be born right after. Kinda a baby factory situation. And they occasionally have twins which is adorable. sorry for rambling.

That IS a hell of a myth. Because where THEY MAINLY live is on an island with BARELY ANY predators.... no foxes there and no cats allowed. There's SOME on the mainland but their numbers have never been much. But they're slowly increasing apparently and are very slightly different in their looks from being genetically separated from the rottnest island ones.

@@joshuakarmann7488 there's virtually NO predators on the island they're on. The handful of them on the mainland have cats as their main predators but these are rarely seen and only in a certain area. So it's a myth. I have seen quokkas a few times but never even heard that myth.
