Dr. Shabir Ally explains that the general outline of the Muslim prayer is the same for men and women in terms of the sequence and what is being recited. However, there are some minor differences depending on the school of Islamic interpretation. He also points out that there are congregational prayers that are required for men but not for women.

I find it strange how we Muslims have added some extra stuff when our Prophet Muhammed "peace be upon him" has specifically stated Pray as I pray, who are we to change or add anything to that?

@@rashidhumine Follow the hadith, rest never heard of being praying differently for being a woman. Coz Ayesha Radhiallaahu Anha never stated i prayed like this and my husband Allah's apostle guided me, even Fathima Radhiallaahu Anha never said or commented about his father Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam said so and so to pray for being a female. And we should never fight or we should never argue for the hadith. Pray as you have seen me praying. Follow as mentioned, rest is in allah's favor, accepting or not its up to Allah. But never keep doubt on it and pray or inform females to pray in any other way. We should only follow Quran for guidance and Sunnah hadith's how to live life, it contains everything from day 1 born till the last breath.

I'm Indian and I grew up watching my female elders pray in this "compact way" almost like making themselves smaller and shrinking....and I used to pray like that too, not knowing any authentic hadith or reason behind it, just following it blindly. But Alhumdulillah I've started doing my own research and seeking knowledge from various well-known and educated experts of Islamic laws and regulations and correcting myself wherever applicable. Being raised in an Arab country all my life, I'm now able to see how people from subcontinent are heavily influenced by culture and how we end up mixing it with our Islam, while the Arabs seem to be following most of the unadulterated version of it. Alhumdulillah 🙌🏽 we should all strive to learn and better ourselves to please Allah....

Exactly! I always follow hanafis which was fine when I was in pakistan. When I came to US. I started searching and learning. And get to know there are thousands of things I was doing wrong. Wrong in the sense I prefer authentic hadith rather than follow any imams. I do believe as we grow older we should read Quran and start follow sunnah. Instead of just following the path of our parents. We should always search for if what we are follow is actually right? . I mean I wanna pray the right way. And until the age of 17 I prayed wrong way. But its ok because I didn't know. But we should start following authentic hadiths and follow sunnah :)

Bowing and sujood are not minor points, they are obligatory in salah. Follow the prophet! Men and women pray the same way, because the prophet taught us through hadiths how to pray . Why use logic when proof is there? That's why the ummah is in pieces because we got 10 scholars saying 10 things instead of using proof they use logic when it's not needed. Allaah keep me and every Muslim on the straight path

True. And since there have been no special instructions from the Prophet Sm to women, nobody else has the right to "maintain their dignity" even if there was something "immodest" about bowing or prostrating for a woman.... my God. Also modesty in public is for both men and women, not just women. Men need to be "modest" at least from the navel to the knee which constitutes the area of concern here.. Move on to more important discussions Muslims. These things are not "clear" in the hadith for a reason... cux these were never important. But you have taken upon yourselves to raise unneccessary questions and make religion difficult.... And both these things are actually what's prohibited by the Prophet Sm in several ahadith...

The thing to remember brothers and sisters is that school of thoughts differ in opinions , All four imaams may Allah be pleased with them, had evidence and had their own criteria in fiqh, so the difference in criteria of fiqh leads to different opinions. So please be respectful because school of thoughts were never to divide us they were to educate. follow the one you find closer to truth and you are satisfied with but it doesn't make others wrong. So basically it depends on the school of Islam you follow- if you follow any? Also, I feel like since he said it depends on if you are in a more public space versus a more private space that it isn't actually compulsatory since that then becomes more about who is around you than it is about Allah. My focus would shift from praying to Allah to who is around me and how closely my body to should be to itself/the ground to "maintain modesty".

Salaam alaikum. With all due respect to those who disagree about the contracted posture, this tucking in is the most comfortable posture for sujood if you intend to lengthen your sujood. This posture supports your weight (my experience) because our strength lies on our hips whereas the men's lie on their shoulders.

Yeah their is always something hidden in the teaching of Islam , those who intrepet that their is no difference actually goes against the teaching of Islam as the Salah of a man and woman equal in all respects, except that she is to adopt the postures that are most concealing for her, by bringing her limbs and parts together in all the actions of Salah, and not separating between them as a man does. This is what all four Taabain peace of upon them also said as well May Almighty guide us better

With all due respect, it’s so uncomfortable to always have to be so worried and preoccupied with guarding our modesty because let be real it’s men that find any of those postures attractive in anyway. It’s just very tiring. They don’t do half the work we have to do to be modest humans.

If women did pray different to men then why hasnt this been mentioned in any books of saheeh hadeeth..bukhari and muslim and tirmidhi. Good general advice. But do wonder if there are special prayers for (1) woman expecting her baby (2) woman who is a teacher in a school doing the first lesson of the day (3) a single mother starting a long journey in a car with her children (4) with her dying mother or father or a relative (5) her children getting married (6) herself in her last moments before she passes away. Christian women will have good stock of prayers for all these situations and much more.

We do have a particular prayer for any of these circumstances which and women can do when crisis strike or good measure. This prayer is called nafl prayer. It is not obligatory prayer if we do it we get rewarded and if we don’t do it we don’t get sinned for it. It’s an optional prayer. Say in case of a decision such as getting a job or getting married these are big decisions to make and we are not sure where to go ahead we pray the same way it’s called istaghara. We ask Allah (SW) for guidance. We get a good dream or a clear vision after that. Hope that helps what your asking

@Islam only Not such an impossibility. Fallacious arguments don't cover up facts. Indeed, the Prophet Sm said the listener of a hadith might understand it better than the conveyor.. And there are many irrational things that may come from people's own understanding rooted in their social norms and customs, which was also the case with the early scholars since they were also human, things that Dr. Shabbir himself spoke against... Like a woman should cover her face and see the path with one eye.. there's a tonne of these actually, nothing new. The Quran and the Prophet's Sm message remain unchanged, not their interpretation by their followers in different times.. So must always go back to the source if something doesn't sound right. Allah Has Ordered all Muslims and all scholars of all times to ponder and use their brain that He Gave to each one of us, not just the early scholars.. And Islam is not a stagnant religion; there is still a lot to learn and a lot to understand the way it was meant to be understood as we see with eg new scientific discoveries, new social situations and challenges.. or the continued study and investigation by scholars.. Tc!

Indeed, Allah looks at her and informs the angels by saying: "O Angels! Be witness that I have forgiven her! [Sunnan al Bayhaqi al-Kubra (3/74)] This hadith is reliable and also corroborated by many ahadith [I’laal al Sunnan (3/33)] Wahabis do Jarh on one narrator of this hadith i.e. Abu Mutih al Balkhi. Without going in detail we would like to prove hypocrisy of Wahabis as they quote from same Abu Mutih al Balkhi to assert that Imam Abu Hanifa (rah) believed Allah is on throne in literal sense (Naudhobillah), but when a hadith comes against them from same narrator they start criticizing him! Note: This article is composed on the basis of "Sound Principle" that even if some hadith is weak in it's chain then it can become "Hasan (fair) or Sahih (correct)" due to many corroborating evidences, hence If some people dispute over a certain hadith then they would be wrong principally as the same matter is proven from many different Turaq which strengthen eachother, hence whole article with all ahadith with different turaq (ways) have to be understood. This is amongst the great principles in science of Hadith classification. Proof # 2 عن يزيدَ بن أبي حبيب أنَّ رسولَ الله مَرَّ عَلَى امرأتينِ تصليانِ، فقال : «إذَا سَجَدْتُمَا فَضُمَّا بعضَ اللحمِ إلى الأرضِ، فإنَّ المرأةَ لَيْسَتْ في ذلِكَ كالرجلِ Translation: Narrated by Yazid bin Abi Habib (ra) that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) passed by two women while they were performing prayer. He said: When you make prostration “KEEP YOUR BODY ATTACHED TO THE GROUND BECAUSE WOMEN ARE NOT LIKE MEN IN THIS CASE” [Sunnan al Bayhaqi al-Kubra (3/74)] In I’laal al Sunnan (3/26) it is said that narrators of this hadith are relied upon and not rejected. This is a Mursal Sahih Hadith and proven from Maraseel of Imam Abu Dawud (rah). Mursal is Hujjah according to Hanafis, Malikis and many great scholars. Plus now it is proven from different hadiths having different narrators that prayer of man and woman is different. It is not possible that different chains present the same case hence it becomes established from Prophet (Peace be upon him) that prayer of man and woman is different.

Proof # 8 عن إبراهيم قال: إذا سجدت المرأة فلتلزق بطنها بفخذيها ولا ترفع عجيزتها ولا تجافي كما يجافي الرجل Translation: Ibrahim (rah) said: When a woman goes in Sajdah she should join the thighs to her stomach and also not raise her posterior and also “NOT STRETCH HER LIMBS OUT LIKE A MALE” [Mussanaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/303)] Proof # 9 عن مجاهد أنه كان يكره أن يضع الرجل بطنه على فخذيه إذا سجد كما تضع المرأة. Translation: Imam Mujahid (rah) considered it “MAKRUH” for a man to attach his stomach to the thighs “LIKE A WOMAN DOES” [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/303)] Proof # 10 حدّثنا أبو بكر قال نا ابن مبارك عن هشام عن الحسن قال: المرأة تضم في السجود Translation: Hasan al Basri (rah) said: A woman should draw herself close together in sajdah [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayban (1/270)] Proof # 11 وعن وائلِ بنِ حجرٍ قالَ: قالَ لي رسولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم : «يا وائلُ بنَ حجرٍ إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ فَاجْعَلْ يَدَيْكَ حِذَاءَ أُذُنَيْكَ، والمَرْأَةُ تَجْعَلُ يَدَيْهَا حِذَاءَ ثَدْيَيْهَا». Translation: It is narrated by Wa’il bin Hujr (ra) that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said to him:..O Wai’l bin Hujr when you (men) start the prayer then raise your hands till your ears”WHEREAS A WOMAN SHOULD RAISE THEM TILL HER SHOULDERS (ONLY)” [Tabrani in his Mu'jam al Kabeer (22/19), I’laa as-Sunnan (2/156)] So It is established from Prophet (Peace be upon him), leading Sahaba like Ibn Umar (ra), Ibn Abbas (ra), Hadrat Ali (ra) also leading Tabiyeen like Mujahid (rah), Ibrahim al Nakha’i (rah), Hasan al Basri (rah) that a women should not pray like men do and their prayer is that which is more concealing. There are many proofs from Fuqaha in this regard including that of Hanafi school which are not mentioned in this article due to brevity issues.

I can't understand one thing, if all mens and womens should pray salah in the same way then from where it came that womens should pray salah in different way ? How can anyone make it ? And why the old ladies and womens learnt to pray salah in different way then mens?

It's mostly on Bangladesh, Pakistan and India and I think this is because of the British era that we've been went through for like 200 years. And from there it's been coming towards us and we can call that a "cultural thing" as long as those Hadidh are not true. And yet in this generation many people doesn’t understand these things cause they do not look through the actual Quran and Hadidh!! (Allah knows best)

Well my question is ...... How on earth this scool of thought decide that how a women should pray ?? Where does this instructions originate from ???? The mind of a person? Does that not baffle other woman? I respects imam greatly and mean no disrespect but at least women should be told that when we are subjected to these differences with such vigor who decides them? Did a sahabia performed it?? Our prophet's wives or daughter or any shabaia or they just decide to makes us modest out of nowhere??? My society pressures me alot into adopting them yet i feel frustrated.. I'm not the kind of woman who follows without sound evidence... It's matter of deen not instructions on ikhlaq 🤐

I would be careful what he explained as he gave no proof what so ever...i could of given this talk myself. This is common practise amongst certain madhabs...they follow blindly their school of thought due to high respect but forget to know that islam isnt based on this but firm proof from quraan and sunnah. If women did pray different to men then why hasnt this been mentioned in any books of saheeh hadeeth..bukhari and muslim and tirmidhi. U will not find 1 hadeeth in these 3 books that women pray differently. X

And both these things are actually what's prohibited by the Prophet Sm in several ahadith..

Prostitutes perform salat and namaz in this way - this is the salat or namaz of prostitutes. A prostitute first initiates this method of salat or namaz. Therefore, there is no control over time in this prayer and it has to be performed until the consumer is satisfied - as prostitutes do during prostitution. So don't be offended if you see prostitutes offering namaz or salat - this method of salat or namaz is the contribution of prostitutes.

Yet another Hanafi blunder. Women ought to keep themselves less exposed and tuck themselves in more. That’s the only difference. Other than that, there is no difference. I believe in Sadl/Irsal arm position anyway so obviously there wouldn’t be a difference in hand position.
