Qutub Minar is one of the most popular places to visit in Delhi. Qutub Minar Delhi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Qutub Minar History in Hindi is briefly explained in the video.
Constructed of red sandstone in 1192 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, Qutub Minar is one of the tallest minarets in the world. Presenting a perfect example of architectural excellence, it is situated at a height of about 72 metres.
There are many stories about the construction of Qutub Minar. Some say that this minaret was built as a symbol of victory and to mark the beginning of Islamic invasion, while according to others it was built for the purpose of prayer.
According to history, Qutub-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim conqueror of Delhi, built the Qutub Minar in 1192. Although the construction work was started by him, but only single storey of the minaret could be completed during his reign. Later, during the rule of his successor Iltutmish around 1230, three more storeys were added to the minaret. After that in 1368 Firoz Shah Tughlaq added the last storey of Qutub Minar.
The Qutb complex also includes the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, which is believed to be the oldest mosque in Northern India. Also known as Jami Masjid, the construction of this mosque started in 1193 AD. Originally constructed from red sandstone, gray quartz and white marble, the building is currently in ruins.
Iron Pillar is also located nearby, which is another popular tourist attraction in Qutub Minar. The iron pillar is about 2000 years old and was constructed in honour of Chandragupta II in the 4th century during the Gupta rule. About 7 meters high, this pillar is made of 98 percent iron, yet it has not rusted and is still in robust condition.
Another popular structure here is the Alai-Darwaja, which was built in 1311 in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The Alai Darwaza is the southern entrance to the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque.
Built by Sultan Alauddin Khilji in 1311, it is a square domed gatehouse.
Among the many historical monuments within the Qutub Minar complex, Alai Minar stands out.
Alauddin Khilji started its construction to make a tower higher than Qutub Minar. However, the minar was left incomplete as the king died in 1316 AD, soon after the construction of the tower began.
But, despite being in a neglected state, the monument resonates with the glory and grandeur of the bygone era.
