Watched your video when I was learning to fly back in 2013 and thought I'd never be able to to do the basic orientations at the time. Your flying skills seemed impossible to me when I could'nt even hover. The learning phase was pretty brutal but I pushed thru and can now fly big air sport. Thanks for the inspiration !

The drift to the left, if already trimmed correctly, is caused by tail rotor induced roll. Because the tail rotor is above CG, it imparts a roll motion opposite to whichever way the tail rotor pushes. If you look closely, even when trimmed properly, even in a stable hover, your bird's fuselage tilts slightly to the right, BUT, it's not drifting, even with the tilt. The prototypes do the same thing if you'll notice, for the exact same reason, that being the tail rotor induced roll. You can't really trim out the tilt, nor should you try. Best thing, trim for the drift and forget the tilt. If it doesn't drift, even tilted, you're fine. Since the prototypes do the same thing, if you're ever inclined to fly scale, it even makes it more of a scale flight. I'm guessing possibly the more modern and sophisticated prototypes may have something that automatically compensates, I don't know. Best thing, when you first pick up, blip the collective slightly to whichever side is appropriate, then center it back, and forget the tilt, correct for the drift. When climbing up out of ground effect, it kind of corrects itself somewhat, more so in forward flight, especially if you have some sort of vertical stabilizer type fin.on the tail, because as forward speed increases, the stab will start to work more and more like the stab on a fixed wing acft, So don't feel bad or worry about the tilt, because the prototypes do the same thing. Watch a bunch of prototype videos here on KZfaq, you'll see what I mean. The old Bell 47s do this quite a bit sometimes. When you're used to this, correcting it will become second nature, like all the other phases of RC heli flight, and you'll be able to compensate without thinking about it. Of coarse, seeing as how you seem to be a very accomplished RC Heli pilot, you probably already know this, so you probably wasn't to,smack me and go "Duh, no shot Sherlock !!" : ) This video shows you visually, and in the beggining he explains this. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8x8gNVi19TGh4U.html

About 10 years ago I had a T-Rex 450 and could not get passed a tail in hover, out of ground effect. Like, I’d lose it as soon as the tail was no longer pointed at me, I’d panic and set it down hard. I ended up selling it because I didn’t have the time or patience to learn.
@Thedaveyht3
@Thedaveyht3 4 жыл бұрын
You were most likely in gyro mode with not enough tail gain to hold. If you had been in heading lock mode with enough gain yoy would have had a much different outcome. Sorry to hear you quit. Never too late to get back in the game plenty of fb grouos to help new folks. Its a wonderful hobby.

Great vid. Its a long road ahead for me, complete novice on the sticks. Is it better to start off with a trainer heli with no training aids or would you recommend something like the eachine e119 which I hear basically flies like a drone in the 6g mode?

I would start with a simulator like real flight. As far as the heli goes I'd get a 500 size something like SAB so you can get parts easily and affordably remember larger the heli the more stable it will be which will make learning easier.

The basics cannot be emphasized enough. Unfortunately, everybody is too eager to "sport" fly like a wannabe airplane. Main thing is one thing at a time. One battery one position. Over/over again. That's how i did it. It's ambitious to do learn all 4x orientations on the same flight. Good job.

@Thedaveyht3
@Thedaveyht3 5 жыл бұрын
That's a big step! With today's flybarless units you will find hoovering very similar if not easier then the SIM. The big difference is when the heli is in front of you and you actully have the presents of those big blades spoiling up and are about to fly essentially a flying lawn mower capable of death. Not to mention the actual cost that your possibly going to lose if you crash and the work of the rebuild. My advice. Get at least a 500 size bigger is more stable. Take baby steps keep the tail facing you easy orientation. And try to find someone local to help you set it up and perform a flight to make sure it flys correctly. It's a huge step when going from the sim to the real thing but the reward is something special. Please feel free to message me for any questions. And remember there are facebook groups that are very helpful out there my favorite is CP helis. Look them up and ask to be added. Then you will have unlimited help. Good luck any questions feel free to look me up!

Your helicopter is drifting to the left because of something called translating tendency. The tail rotor is producing thrust to the left. Some helicopters compensate for it by having the main rotor offset slightly. Here's a video explaining it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNiPp5x7rNK0das.html

***** hello. I am new to flying heli's and l would really like to be able fly one day. My I know you are supposed to start off with mastering the hover however that is where my problems begin. Whenever I try to lift off the hdmi would either sway left or right and it really frustrates me. I have tried to use the cyclic stick to correct this problem while lift off but I would have to do a full input on the stick before the heli would start swaying the opposite way. However, after lift off it would bank way to much to that opposite direction. Is there any wrong with my heli? Also do you think it's a good idea for me to get training gears for my heli when I am learning to fly? Thanks.
@trexinvert
@trexinvert 10 жыл бұрын
Billy DaBaus Forget about mastering the hover. This sport is HARD. You need to master "building" and "programming" correctly. Especially, with FBL and DFC for a first timer. Two alternatives. 1.) Start with an FB(flybarred) helicopter that has a single/rudder gyro. 2.) Start with an RTF nano or minicopter(blade nano, blade 130, align 150). It's fully RTF and programmed. At least, you don't wonder if the setup is wrong or you built it wrong.

How do you do that, when you have300+ dollars invested, PANIC is the only thing to do when heli does the unexpected, or is for me, it cost more money to repair heli and that just made that 300+ jump to 400+ quickly, So HOW do you NOT PANIC ??
@Thedaveyht3
@Thedaveyht3 9 жыл бұрын
+jbrunson1949 How not to panic. Sim a lot. always stay calm on the stcks, set-up you're heli as best you can so there are no un-expected surprises or UN-nessecary inputs you are making and oh yeah sim a lot!! also remember the more you fly the more comfortable you will become. thanks for watching.

@Thedaveyht3
@Thedaveyht3 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I believe the ease of flying drones really did take its toll on helis. Helis take skill to build fly and maintain set up of electronics can also be a turn off to helis. We still have a strong community just not what e were approaching in 2009 to 2012 before drones became a household name.

Most pilots will often land in idle-up mode and flip the throttle hold switch (often the left switch) which cuts power to the motor while blades still have enough moment for a good landing with the proper use of collective pitch. Serves a second purpose as well, this will help bring the blades to a stop much faster and you'll already be in safe mode to get your heli off the flying field.
@Thedaveyht3
@Thedaveyht3 8 жыл бұрын
+669Banshee The battery was not dead I hit throttle hold and auto-ed the heli down. I always do this it is a good practice as it bleeds speed and inertia off the disk so if you happen to do a blade scrap you are not under power.
