Hidden behind a lush tree line, off a well-traveled road, lies a collection of cars that has flown under Tom Cotter’s radar for years. Among the stash is a pair of desirable K5 Chevy Blazers and an early-model De Tomaso Pantera. But the real gem is hidden inside a warehouse, buried in the corner, under a couple decades’ worth pile of dust and junk.

I completely restored a Pantera back in the 90s, and I mean all the metal that was rusted. What people dont realize is that these bodies were assembled and before paint and primer they were stored in the yard unprotected. Some cars new at the Ford dealers already had serious rust problems. So you have a triple sandwiched unibody (in places) and a serious pain to restore. I probably spent 600+ hours in metal work alone and had to hand fabricate a lot of parts. It was a learning experience - LOL. I should have restored an old Ferrari.

@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, they were complicated cars to restore, but a Ferrari from the same period can be far worse and the price of parts for them is just ridiculous. A lot of Pantera parts, because, mechanically, they were parts bin specials, are still available for sensible money. And, well, they're not a Ferrari. A thoroughly well-sorted Pantera is easily the car that Ferrari wished it could build back then...

@@b.c.gamingss Depends on condition. First start telling us what's wrong. I to am restoring a 69 Tbird. A lot of work ahead of you my friend. On my Tbird alone it took me 4 months of hard work to just get the car road worthy again. That's replacing all the suspension, brake system (including power booster and master cylinder and lines too), sanding and painting the underside. Also rebuilding the transmission and rear axle and new tires. Finally rebuilding the steering system. I haven't even started on the body. the trunk needs to be stripped and resealed and painted. Inside I need to pull the carpet out and check the condition of the floor pans. Doors need a little bit of work (no rot thankfully). My biggest problem is the rear quarters. Both sides have rot and need to be replaced as well as the dogleg behind the door. Now I don't know the extent of what you need to do, but looking at what I went through can give you an idea of what you are possibly getting yourself into. Good luck and don't give up on her!

For hoarder the actual value of an item is not what it is worth now. It is what it could be someday. That's why they can't sell anything or get rid of anything. They are so emotionally attached to this dream of "some day". I'm sure you have something like that too. For example a special watch your father gave you that you would not sell. With today's costs nothing is worth restoring if it is not numbers matching. That is if you use the term "restoring" as to what it actually means. 'Building' a non matching numbers car is a whole different ball of wax.
@xp8364
@xp8364 4 жыл бұрын
Also any '66 Impala with a factory installed matching numbers 427 is a COPO car since it was not an RPO yet. We had one and could not keep a starter in it, nor could we buy one for it either. We had to fabricate one utilizing half of the housing from a truck starter and that didn't even last long. That was in 1974 and was one of my favorite cars, out of hundreds, that we have had in my lifetime. 2 brothers bought the car from us and went racing with it at Suffolk Raceway. Like everyone else....if we had only known back then what we know now.

You just gave the main reason Nascar is on the decline... You CAN'T go to Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, purchase a car, do a few safety mods to it and go racing. It's gotten way to expensive and way to restrictive for the up and coming Richard Petty's of the world to be able to compete!!! Side note: My grandmother and aunt were on their way back to Charlotte from Columbia SC (visiting my gmom's sister) and her car broke down. A very nice young man and a couple of his friends stopped to see if they could help, my aunt being single and sort of a feminist b4 there were feminists said no but if he was going to Charlotte could he give my grandmother a ride... Of course he did, and when my aunt finally got home my grandmother was all grins and asked her if she knew who that man was who gave her a ride??? It was the King himself.. Mr Richard Petty and family on their way home from a race... She smiled for weeks after that ride, and my aunt, who didn't need a man, changed her tune cause he certainly would have noticed that the coil wire had popped off ;-) Really enjoy your show sir!!!

I have never been able to afford one, but if I could, I would treat it like it was one of my kids with tender loving care. It grinds me to see people fortunate enough to own one and just let it sit outside and rot away or park it in a shed and forget about it for 30 years. What a fricking waste.

Great video as always. And yes sad also. Wonder if Tom knows the folks in Rowan County that had hot rods and other cars where there was a fire that burned the garage where the cars were kept. Happened about a week ago. Apparently they got most of the cars (something like 15) out of the garage with just some water damage. It was sad about the fire but good news that most cars were saved. I think Tom will continue to find great barn finds in the Carolinas and all across the country.

I worked with a guy that had a 68 427 4sp convertible impala that was red with white interior and top. It got stolen but they found it years later in a police compound yard missing the drive train. His insurance company didn't want to pay (this was years ago) to have it fixed so he took them to court and won. He had a new drive train installed and started driving it again. He passed years ago but his son still owns the car. I loved the shark gills the fenders had.

Nothing wrong with the yellow Pantera body here since it was stored on concrete without salt or snow. Interior looks good and body panel fit is perfect. Original Campagnolo rims but needs tires to roll it out properly.

I have seen videos of the Ford plant in the 1960s using an electric (using charged particles for coating, very similar to how a laser printer works) rust prevention coating. The coating was on both the inside and the outside. They basically put a negative charge on the body and then submerged the body in a bath which is positively charged. Whatever they were using didn't work.

I love junkyards. Even as a little kid i loved them but never got into working on cars. My dad was a car guy but then family got in the way. In the late 70s/80s had a 67 corvette convertible with side pipes, forest green. he sold a '58 corvette to a Chevy dealer back in 1980 or so. He kept a 68 Camaro SS/RS in our garage until he got divorced in 1993. To this day i don't understand the guy. He stopped working on cars completely and never asked me to help. I suppose family got in the way and he had to focus on paying the bills and the Camaro was something to dream about. The interior still had a new car smell to it. It was red with white stripes and then the new owner painted it baby blue smh. My dad was furious!

We had to get our family car worked on in Kansas City at the Ford dealer, I was wandering around while waiting, and I was looking at a Pantera in the showroom, of course I was also looking at the new Cougars. Of course our car was a 69 Colony Park Mercury.

The Pantera left the factory, only three quarters finished. They were known for dodgy suspension and brakes and the chassis needed a stiffening kit.

.....and as the video progresses, I think I learned here who the guy was that took those parts off that OTHER R-Code , it was thie guy that owned " the other R-Code " sitting in the garage .Mystery solved, he only owned 1 R code and it was rusted beyond repair ......the other one he owned "Became" and r-code after he robbed the O.G. car out rusting in the lot .

Interesting collection of Fords and Chevys..!! I hope he sells lots of these that can be enjoyed and restored by someone else. I owned a 1967 427 Impala 4spd car in San Jose CA. Purchased from a local family for $1500. after the husband passed away. It was fun and FAST....!! Just the hood with the grills on top was worth $$$$

Thought it might be hiding under the floormat laying on the seat, but after looking at interior pictures of a 4wd 72 Blazer transfer case shifter, I think you are correct. The steering wheel looked to be off a Camaro as well.

My uncle had and sold a yellow pantera back in the early 90s the young couple that bought it had a 2.3 hr drive home where to where they lived. In the end the never made it home cause they wrecked it on the highway due to high speeds both were killed in the single car accident I believe they were in their mid 20s
