Slane Castle, the original home of the summer rock festival in Ireland gets ready for REM.
Slane Castle owner Lord Henry Mountcharles says he had some anxious moments leading up to the concert when two members of REM were hit by serious illness. At one point it looked like the event would not take place. The group cancelled six of their scheduled shows, however Slane went ahead.
Since 1981 Slane Castle has played host to artists such as Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. RTÉ 2fm DJ Dave Fanning considers the REM concert at Slane to be,
"Not as legendary say as The Rolling Stones,
Not as legendary say as Bob Dylan,
but...it’s as significant as all the other ones."
Chief Superintendent John O’Brien outlines the Garda security measures in operation for the concert.
70,000 fans are expected to attend the REM concert supported by Oasis, Sharon Shannon, Belly, Spearhead and Luka Bloom.
