Michael Stipe's voice is wonderful and unique. I wish REM were still together
@davidlaymanpiano4 жыл бұрын
The title "Losing My Religion" refers to lead singer Michael Stipe's grandmother's term for losing her cool and saying things that she would not have typically said because of her faith. Notice all the religious symbolism throughout the video, including Doubting Thomas from the Bible, and Icarus from Greek mythology. The song and it's video are masterpieces.

Kurt Cobain grew up loving REM , and Michael Stipe ( rem's vocalist ) also was a fan of nirvana. Stipe had sent Kurt a request to work on a project together, Kurt agreed to, but had began isolating himself in a house he had that was out of town-kind of out in the sticks.He was not taking calls and not responding to anyone for the most part, except Courtney . Just before the very questionable " suicide" took place, Stipe had sent Kurt a plane ticket to get Kurt out of that house and to stay with him and work on music together. He even sent his driver to the house, who waited outside for 10 hours. After Kurt died, the note from Michael Stipe asking him to come work with him was found taped to his wall. I always liked REM, but after hearing this story, I loved them even more.

Rewatching this, I realized this is an edited version of the video. I didn't know there was one. During the "consider this" verse, a man is supposed to put his finger in the fallen angel's wound (symbolic of Thomas putting his finger through Jesus's wounds). I guess it made people uncomfortable. It was the version I had on VHS (which sadly got thrown away).

I always interpreted this song as a “love lost” or a song of a love unrequited. Either falling out of love or losing the interest/ affection of the one they admire. “...A distance in your eyes...” they can see that, the attention to them is waning... “...oh no, I’ve said too much, I haven’t said enough...” trying to bring up awkward conversations, trying to get your feelings off your chest, but then being too afraid to really air it all out... this song is so deep and can mean different things to different people, or even several things to the same person in different moods... I love this song so much, I still listen to it regularly. Now it’s time to check out some G-Mo Skee! I’m telling you there really aren’t any artist who are as creative as him at the moment...

REM "This one goes to the one I love" and "Low", much peace and blessings to you.
@paulagwhyte17204 жыл бұрын
Michael Stipe wrote it about loving someone who didn't love him back and about the difficulty of trying to hint or tell the person but being so afraid of rejection and having low self-esteem. But on the other hand, "Losing my religion" means I'm going to lose my temper or go off on someone, but losing your religion for real, as in becoming an atheist is a wonderful thing. I am one. And I can tell you that being a Humanist who cares about other humans instead of bowing before a god is so much better. REM is one of the best there is. He also admired Sinead O'Connor (as do I) and wanted to dance somewhat the way she did in her video "The Emperor's New Clothes," which IS more about losing your religion, really giving it up and I LOVE that video and song. It's about standing up for yourself no matter what other people say because if you become an atheist you will face a lot of opposition from people who fear you and dread losing their own belief in fairy tales. You should watch "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Sinead. Love it. She has the voice of an angel, even though I don't believe in them! Lol We are the angels and we have to do our jobs better.
