For my life long friend and Brother- In- Arms Gene Webb, 101st Airborne. I remember when the VA told you they had never seen anyone with as much Agent Orange in their body and still be alive. Two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and Presidential Citation. You've been gone almost five years but I think of you daily. Two tours in Nam. Damn I miss you. RIP Brother.

Your story has touched all of our hearts. RIP to your fallen comrade. And you find comfort for many years to come. RIP to all of our servicemen and women. And dear Lord, please watch over our current service men and women in Afghanistan, especially to my cousin, who is like a kid brother to me. Protect him, guide him and bring him home to us safely. Amen.

Agent orange (aka orange crush) was an herbicide used during veitnam and the maylayan emergency as a defoliant and crop killer to reduce the food and cover for guerilla fighters. The batches were contaminated however because of the high-heat method of making it, which resulted in a highly toxic chemical mixture which caused numerous defects in Vietnam vets and their children. The former us airbases are still contaminated nearly 3 times the lethal limit for exposure.

MAC s. Unintended consequences. Next time they use Agent Orange, it will be safer. It was quite a genius plan that could have worked great if not for the health defects. It worked in Malaya and brought victory to the British. " President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam asked the United States to conduct aerial herbicide spraying in his country" And it was approved by President Kennedy to be researched. It's not illegal to use Agent Orange, simply that it can be illegal in certain cases where it damages civilian life significantly.

This song is so good and people can relate to the meaning of the is song. My grandpa was in the Vietnam War back then and was surrounded by Agent Orange. Sadly, he had a reaction to it and got a severe heart attack. But the miraculous thing that happened is that he survived it. He passed away about 1 time in the ambulance, and 2 times at the hospital but got saved by the doctors. He is still here today and is better than ever. Thank you for the first responders and doctors who kept him alive, and RIP to the people who has passed away due to Agent Orange.

This song has a distinctive Aussie pub rock vibe of the 80s/ early 90s a la, Midnight Oil, INXS, Hunters & Collectors, Australian Crawl, etc.. daringly earnest and political, but not overbearingly preachy or the vacuous millennial political gesturing. It's unpretentious and truly authentic blue collar, working class realism.

I think part of the genius of Micheal Stipe is the way he puts words together in his songs..like Bob Dylan most of his lyrics are poetry set to music. Everyone is familiar with ' serve your country overseas'.....but "serve your conscience overseas' is similiar yet profoundly different enough to capture the imagination long after the song has ended. He has dozens of lines, maybe hundreds like that throughout his songwriting career.

Can’t listen to this without thinking of my uncle John. He died two years ago. I didn’t find out until months after his death that he was being treated for exposure to Agent Orange. At least he lived a long life until cancer caught up with him. Too many of our young men didn’t get that chance. RIP Uncle John. I didn’t know him well enough while he lived. He loved traveling to Italy and Shelter Island. Worked a long time for NBC in Manhattan. How can you grieve someone you hardly knew?
@richardlingo4055
@richardlingo4055 2 жыл бұрын
Of course you can but don't forget you're not grieving the man as he really was just your own construct ...an ideologue of him. Nobody is ever remembered as they really were. It's the nostalgia effect. The " good old times" were never as good as they seem looking back. Memories are always distorted so we recall only the best or the worst. Reality lies somewhere in between.

Agent Orange was the product of Monsanto. In the 1960s and 1970s, Monsanto was a producer of Agent Orange for United States Armed Forces operations in Vietnam. And they were sued later but still are in business. They make products like RoundUp, PCBs and Dicamba and were sued in 2020. Bayer (the company that now owns them) agreed to pay numerous settlements in lawsuits involving Monsanto products

Shits fucked up, my grandfather retired in the 70’s and worked next to the lake where they dumped the left over Agent Orange. His heart disintegrated at 65 years old, VA and EPA both deny the chemicals in the lake had anything to do with it. That shit now has seeped into the aquifer along with aircraft fuel from leaking tanks many get water from. EPA won’t touch the clean up.

+Alex L unfortunately, war is ugly. I won't go into the politics of whether or not certain wars are justified, as that's a whole other issue. not everyone fighting in Vietnam agreed with the war. my dad served during this time in the navy (never got near "Nam, fortunately). he felt we had no business being in Vietnam.

+JDStorm76 No, whether someone is a hero or not, is completely dependent on the morality of the war. If you do not think the war is just, you should refuse service to the last. To fight in a unjust war, like Vietnam, makes you no better than a murderer.
@jdstorm5729
@jdstorm5729 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex L based off your opinion, your morality is based purely off who you work for. if even one of your bosses has done something wrong in life, that makes you evil by default. sounds as idiotic as saying you can't be a hero because you disagree with the morality of a war. side note, I would've responded under my other account, but KZfaq wasn't letting me post.

I was a huge fan of REM before they became popular. When they were still college radio, they were geniuses. This song, along with "Green Grow the Rushes" and anything off Murmur (despite their kindred spirit band, XTC, sending them up with Mummer) were all genius. I have played in mostly crappy but well-intentioned bands for most of my life. If we had achieved, not the commercial success, but just the cultural resonance of one of REM's early, awesome songs, we would have felt like kings, even if we still had to live like starving, frightened peasants...like everyone else.

Ironically, I saw REM play at the Mad Hatter in Athens, Ga. in 1981...and it was horrible. they had no play list, so they had to huddle up after each song to decide what to play next. this was well before Michael Stipe saw any value in being understandable or intelligible. they have since improved.

As a kid in the 80s and 90s I knew REM was good, I liked REM, I didn’t understand the lyrics to a lot of their songs. I think that’s why some bands (not REM) waned in popularity as quickly as they rose to popularity. We were just kids listening to songs written by people older than us and had no clue the depth and breadth of the lyrics in the music. The older I get the more I love and miss that point in my life.
