I love the cycle that this song is from & which is my favorite one from the cycle itself Crespin is the French soprano whose timbre & interpretive gifts affect me the most. The studio recording has a clearer sound but this excerpt here is most welcome & appreciated.

Only just found this. Wow! I've always loved her singing this but it's marvellous to watch her as well. For anyone studying singing it's an object lesson in how to achieve a resonant pianissimo with perfect diction that doesn't disturb the legato. The fact that it's also wonderfully musical and completely inside the music idiomatically is almost too much. What I found mesmeric was watching how she focuses the vowels bang in the middle of the mouth. You just have to be grateful that such wonders have been caught on film and recorded.

Well, maybe that's easier to use freely her face IF she is lip synchronizing her own recording. I'm nearly sure this is the case. II adore this disc, and would have really liked to see how she was producing these wonderful sounds. Anyway, what she brings here is of a highly inspirated artist.

So beautiful! I love her mezzo repertoire, and as I studied voice a long time ago, I was a chorus member of Boston Opera when she sang in Sarah Caldwell’s production of Bizet’s Les Troyes - she was mesmerizing!

Thanks for sending this to me - I adore Ms Crespin - I think she had one of the most luscious voices ever - like velvety dark chocolate, or a vat of honey! She was a treat in every way. The charachter of her voice was hard to pidgeon-hole - she was just a GREAT singer - on the forever barometer. And add to that her complete artistry - mon dieu - quelle tresor!

Crespin also recorded this with Ansermet for London-Decca in the early sixties.... all of the Nuit d'ete and Ravel's Scheherezade.... some of the most ravishing singing ever recorded. I remember seeing her on stage in recital ca. 1967 and in the incandescent Werther at the Met (with Corelli!) in 1970! This is a glory- thank you!

The orchestra is not visible...because she sings on her own recording with Ansermet (a perfect one). But it's a pity not to have done it with the great Christian Ivaldi who was present in this show and played La vie antérieure with Crespin. You don't see the real muscles working; it looks very poetic...but artificially soft.

Thank you for the kind information both astrasburgo and crespinforever5. I have her Wesendonck Lieder on EMI ASD White/Gold early stereo LP - it's exquisite!
