8:40 fun fact! when seatbelts were first mandated, people DID complain about it! same with DRIVING WHILE DRINKING. people were in uproar and angry at the time for their “god given right to drive without seatbelt/with a drink”. Nowadays that’s pretty much gone but yeah… we DID have people like that. History repeats.

THANK YOU for the pro-library rant! I've worked at one for over 20 years and it's crazy what we loan out these days. We have a metal detector, a paper shredder, novelty cake pans, a sewing machine, a food canning kit, a wood burning art kit, yard games, wi-fi hotspots, knitting kits, gaming systems and games, bike locks, umbrellas, colorblind glasses, LP records and a record player, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, CDs, books in Braille, framed art prints to hang on your wall, and, y'know, regular books. We have internet computers, color and black-and-white printing, a 3-D printer, a Braille printer, a die cut machine, an art gallery, a makerspace, and more. That's not even getting into the electronic/digital resources we offer. Anyone who thinks libraries are outdated, a waste of money, or only have books needs to get out from beneath a rock.

libraries have always been a safe space for me, no one talks to you, you have the choice between millions of different books and stories, they always smell nice, sometimes it smells like maple. they provide you comfy seats and tables to rest your books on, and that's just the basic stuff. I remember going to the library for movies before redbox or netflix or disney+, i would go on a deep dive into some mythology using the computers to keep it all organized. Libraries are the best

I love our local library. It's in a nice park-like setting in town, and is just fantastic. It was a lifesaver when my son was a toddler, as I'd go to their twice a week 'Storytimes" sessions where one of the librarians would read books to the children. And I was always getting books out as I read to my son every night, and books out for me too of course, and we'd be able to hire DVD's for the week for just $1, and that was where my son first got to play video games because we didn't have that stuff at home, and there is a small art gallery attached to our library. It's a wonderful place! I think too a library is a bit of an equalizer as it gives kids who don't come from much money the chance to do the same stuff as kids that do.

I did actually have an issue once with what was in the children’s section of the library. It opens with the protagonist drunk in a bar after having saved a virgin from being sacrificed to a dark cult and “ensuring the cults wouldn’t be interested in her again” and after switching bodies with a princess he is nearly r4ped and directly refers to his attackers as would be r4pists. So I tried to talk to a librarians who was like, no it’s a kids book it was in the kid’s section and I just went it has r4pe in it. She just gave me a little oh… and I left after that cause what more was there to say besides, I am ordering the rest in through from the other branches cause it’s a very good book, just not a kid’s book.

@alexismyers6053
@alexismyers6053 10 ай бұрын
I read the Warriors book series. The books are basically about murder cat cults. It has GRAPHIC depictions of violence and sometimes depictions of birth (nothing anatomical just kittens “sliding out from under their mother’s tail” in a little membrane sack that the medicine cats have to rip open, tho one mother did die in birth in the first arch and it was bloody). It is NOT meant for young kids, so it’s in the Young Adult section of most book stories. There are idiot parents who buy it for their young kids because “the cover has cute pictures of cats, there can’t be anything bad about it,” especially with the new art cover style. The old style would depict a scene from the book, which would sometimes be battles. The new style just features 2 or 3 key characters starting intensely. But imagine giving your child a book thinking it’s for kids and it mentally scars them because they are two small to understand what’s going on is fiction.
@alexismyers6053
@alexismyers6053 10 ай бұрын
@@Nostripe361 when I got into Camp Camp- a show with VERY adult language and sometimes graphic/gross depictions- I was telling my aunt about and said something likes “yeah the animation is cute and all, but it is DEFINITELY not for kids, not with how often Max drops the F bomb.” She was SHOCKED because “I thought all cartoons were for kids!” I asked her who she thought Family Guys target audience was. Her response? “I don’t know, I never watched it, but so many kids do that I thought it was for them.” No, Tara, Family Guy is NOT for kids. Any adult who lets any child watch that show is either too lazy to care or thinks like you that cartoons are on,y for kids, so the cutesy cartoon that shuts their kids up for like 20 minutes don’t need to be vetted first.

@@alexismyers6053 fair, but as a kid who grew up on warriors: kids dont usually get “scarred” by fiction books, at least at the age in which they can read books of that length. Kids understand what fiction is. In fact, this stuff, to me, was completely ok and i just accepted it. Silverstream dies while giving birth? Oh well, that can happen. Cats dying in gruesome ways? Oooooooh thats fun! I do agree that parents need to be aware of what content their kids are reading (mine were), but you shouldn’t take away this from them. If anything, it’s better for the kids to have this sort of thing as a safe space to know and learn that stuff like this happens before it hits them in real life, and it gives kids variety in media! If the kid doesn’t like violence in their books, then they would stop reading those books and find something they do like (they would probably realize it isnt for them before the more intense things happened). Plus, if not for me discovering and reading Warriors, I would not have realized how fun books can be, and my life would be much more sad. (and the new covers suck lol thanks for another reason why)

Libraries are also important because 'home tutoring', unless in the case of something severe like an injury/surgery recovery that makes it impossible to leave the house (a friend of mine had back surgery in high school), has to take place in a public setting. When I was in school, that was where this tutoring was done The town had actually completely pulled funding for it, and there was real risk of it going under until there was a vote to put school taxes towards it, and it won by a LANDSLIDE This was maybe six or seven years ago, and it's still going strong to this day

So women - a womb, being emotionally healthy (in the extent she is implying), & being a "future bestie" is honestly not something to strive for when it's a toxic environment. It's not worth jumping through the barbed wire hoops that will leave with with more and more scars every time to keep chasing a goalpost that will keep moving. Being emotionally healthy, even if you are mentally ill and need help means you are doing awesome. Being happy on your own terms is what is important. Please know that. We even have wi-fi hotspots available for people to rent and they are one of our most popular items. So popular, I can’t remember the last time I saw one on the shelf. So to the OP at 17:05 and anyone else who agrees with them, I hope all your socks are soaked and both sides of your pillow are hot.

The quiet room has been turned into an arts and crafts room. The worst part is, if libraries keep - not just discarding books, you _have_ to do some of that in a library - but _reducing their collection size_ to provide more non-informational services, bookstores and the internet are going to be our only options... and curated, vetted, confirmed, and preserved information will become yet another privilege of the wealthy. I'm afraid that someday, if you go into a library to find the answer to a question, or to help defend yourself against your landlord or a corporation, a bureaucrat will hand you a card that's good for 15 minutes on an Internet kiosk, and that will be all the public information that you can get for free.

Robin, I grew up riding around in cars from the 70's. Getting in an accident in one of those was preferable to a modern car, as long as you wear seat belts. We got slammed from behind by a Jeep. Dude had scratches from our bumper on his hood because of how fast he was going when he hit us while we were stopped at a stop sign. We had a few tiny scratches. That's it. He'd laid rubber as he slammed the brakes half way down the hill. Everyone was fine. Another time we were parked in our parking lot, a woman pulls in to turn around, she makes a wide circle and rammed our car. Same car btw. She crumpled her front fender. We had some white paint on our trunk where she hit the car. That was it. She tried to say we hit her. The car hadn't even been turned on that day. I'll take an accident in that hunk of Plymouth steel over anything. I miss that old car though. It gave out around the turn of the Millennium.

I learned to drive in a '83 caprice - smaller than yours most likely, but that puppy was *solid* (and kind of terrifying tbh, at idle it would hit 10mph and for a newbie who didn't want to learn, an autonomous tank was scary af). I accidentally hit a dip (like a culvert but in the road for storm runoff) so hard it busted the plastic behind the (metal) bumper and a control arm, but naught else. My modern car in an under 30mph collision - full front end replacement 🤦

@@treepotato9273 what I'm saying is that car took the force of the collision and we barely noticed it, and it came out with a few scratches at most. I was in a crash in a modern vehicle, it didn't fare well and my arm wound up massively messed up. So yes, I'll take the old Plymouth.

@@It-is-me...Melsie true, they have done a lot of work to make cars safer. And I really appreciate things like airbags and seatbelts. I also appreciate good drivers. A lot of the accidents I have been a part of have been because someone wasn't paying attention or was simply driving well over the speed limit. Since there are too often more than one car involved it takes more than one good driver to prevent accidents.

I think I know the context on the book with the pigeon. It was titled John Lennon Imagine, so I'm guessing it's a book version of John Lennon's song of the same name. And the lyrics in the song includes: "Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us, only sky" So I'm guessing the parent in the post is a conservative christian who thinks that this is part of satanist/athiest propaganda and is mad that it's being "forced onto" children.

Technically in the past there used to be giant trees out there. With the smallest being as big as our largest trees in the world. Now such theory could be also a possibility considering that a really long time ago animals also used to be huge. Like dinosaurs for example. Due to the concentration of oxygen in the air being higher. Sure that image below looks like an incredibly huge place and it's most likely not a tree. But oversized trees did actually exist.
@MisterIncog

Higher concentration of oxygen actually helped only insects be huge, their breathing mechanism is the only one that can take advantage of more oxygen without crushing under its own weight, literally and figuratively speaking. The bigger you are - the more energy you need. Higher oxygen levels helped flying reptiles being big but still able to fly though, that’s cool!
