As far as I know, there's no reference to that in the books, but it was a little "Easter egg" dropped in by the showrunners.

Jons parentage is one of the big mystery of the books there was lots of theories about who it was. So george ask them that to see if they had it figured out, cause if you do i guess you really understand the books and youre not someone just trying to cash in using his books.

In the books Catelyn looked very much like an older Sansa, really beautiful. Bran, Sansa, Robb and Rickon look like Cat. They have faint traits and have red hair. While Jon and Arya have dark hair like Ned and have more rough around the edge traits like him. BTW when you're gonna re-watch the show, you'll see some of the characters you hated at first like Jaime are gonna be funny now. Like when I saw Jaime when I re-watched it, when he was being a jerk, I was laughing at everything he did. lol

This is one thing that Game of Thrones did Perfectly. They outright screamed the truth in our face for the entire show and few of us saw it. There might have been a hunch but they made such a big deal about him being ned's bastard all the time. That was damn near part of the basic lore of the story ned has a bastard that his wife doesn't like. Okay I say this all the time but just think about it....... I think that Katlyn knew who John was all along and that is why she didn't want him around she was afraid of her family's safety she was not upset about ned cheating.

If you’re going to watch any post Game of Thrones video essay, I would recommend “The real Tyrion Lannister” by Alt Shift X. It’s not a theory video (though it does analyze the Tyrion theory I think you’re referring to) but it’s just an excellent character study of Tyrion in the show and the books. I think of it as Alt Shift X’s masterpiece. Would be great to see someone react to it and discuss it.

OMG if you guys are doing more fan theories, can you do one on the Three Eyed Raven? His identity is super fascinating and it's semi-confirmed who he is in the books. I think the show did him and Bran's overall storyline so dirty without exploring more on those two characters. I think you guys would find the fan theory on the Three Eyed Raven interesting and it brings more depth to his character. Another theory about Jon's parentage is that his mother could have been Ashara Dayne, Arthur Dayne's (Sword of the Morning knight) sister. It's a smaller fan theory that mainly comes from the books. In the Tourney of Harrenhal, it wasn't just Rhaegar and Lyanna who had sparks flying, but Ned and Ashara as well. Many characters implied that they loved each since they had a dance together at the tourney and assume Ned's bastard must have been with her. Catelyn even questioned Ned about Ashara and his reaction was telling, he very intensly forbidden her and the household guards from ever mentioning Ashara and it was the only time Ned had ever scared her. It's unlikely this theory is true, might even be a misdirection from R+L=J, but it's interesting to see how it colors the characters perceptions of Ned and Jon.

Alot of people have said why didn't Ned tell Catelyn the truth about jon ... To me in my opinion .. and again in my eyes ... It was a secret that Ned promised leana his sister and not others also just in season 1 we see how cat does what she likes without consent example capturing Tyrion Lannister just because little finger said so maybe ned knew cat was quick to judge and i believe cat wouldn't be able to keep it a secret either ... Even the telly house words honour isn't first ... Thats my theory anyways i could be wrong ... And only a show around Robert's Rebellion and Rhaegar Targaryen ... Would confirm it

Nobody caught it at first viewing but it's crazy when you look back and see this. It's a great easter eggs by the makers of the show. In the first book, GRRM keeps repeating the scene of Ned seeing Lyanna for the last time. The two main takeaways are Lyanna is on a bloody bed and she keeps telling him to promise her something. Furthermore, everyone keeps saying how Ned was noble and not the kind of man who would ever betray his marriage vows. Put it together with King Robb being a drunk asshole and Daenarys thinking that Rhaegar and Lyanna was a love story and it's not too hard to figure that Jon is Lyanna's son. The show does tell you in the second episode since Ned won't talk about Jon's mother to anyone including Robb and Robb has a hate boner for killing Targaryan children. Also when Robb is asked about Lyanna he doesn't talk about Lyanna. He talks about how she was taken away from him. He centers himself in that story. "They took her away from me" he whines like a petulant child.

Both videos make the same points but just go about them differently. It might be a different story if you two didnt already know what it all meant when the scene in the tower happened. Also it always strikes me how much the show downplayed the deaths of Rhaegars children & Elia Martell because its makes Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters look bad for what they did to them. Jons parentage unless youre asking yourself why the secrecy about who his mother is/was it would never occur to you to question Neds story.
