श्रीलंका के मन्नार के किले का अपना एक खूनी इतिहास है। कोई आश्चर्य नहीं कि आज ये किला एक खण्डहर बन चुका है जहां अधिकतर आपको मलबा ही दिखेगा, दुर्गंध मारते पोखर और नालियों, टूटी दीवारें, छत विहीन एक किला। आपका स्वागत किले के बाहर और भीतर विचरण करते गधे करेंगे।
१५७५ में पुर्तगाली कैथोलिक आक्रमणकारियों ने मन्नार स्थित तिरुकेतीस्वरम मंदिर को ध्वंस कर दिया था और उस टूटे हुए मंदिर के पत्थरों और स्तंभों से १५८९ पुर्तगालियों ने इस मैनर फोर्ट, एक कैथोलिक चर्च और अन्य एक किला बनवाया था।
कुछ दशकों पश्चात ये किला डच आक्रमणकारियों के अधीन हुआ और उसके पश्चात ब्रिटिशों के।
न केवल तिरुकेतीस्वरम मंदिर को बल्कि श्रीलंका स्थित अनगिनत अन्य मन्दिरों को भी पुर्तगालियों और डच आक्रमणकारियों ने नष्ट किया था।
मन्नार नगर से ये किला लगभग डेढ़ दो किलोमीटर की दूरी पर है।
Mannar Fort of Sri Lanka has its own bloody history. No wonder today this place has become a ruin where mostly you will see only debris, foul smelling puddles and drains, broken walls, a fort without a roof. You will be welcomed by donkeys roaming outside and inside the fort.
In 1575, Portuguese Catholic invaders destroyed the
Thiruketeeswaram Temple in Mannar and from the stones and pillars of that broken temple, the Portuguese built this manor fort, a Catholic church and another fort in 1589.
After a few decades, this fort came under the control of the Dutch invaders and then the British.
Not only Thiruketeeswaram Temple but also countless other temples in Sri Lanka were destroyed by the Portuguese and Dutch invaders.
This fort is at a distance of about one and a half to two kilometers from Mannar city.
