Is the West eccentric? For our ninth Ramsay Lecture for 2023, esteemed French philosopher and best-selling author Professor Rémi Brague explains why he believes the West IS eccentric, in conversation with Centre CEO Professor Simon Haines.
Brague argues that the West is an outlier civilisation that uniquely acknowledges superiority of some elements of foreign culture, in particular Classical culture. He traces this ability back to the essential role of Rome, claiming that it was the sense of inferiority that the ancient Romans felt towards the Greeks (culturally not militarily) that saw them develop an indispensable ability to draw together and assimilate cultural traditions.
This psychology of “secondarité” or inferiority never left the West, Professor Brague claims, and consequently the West with roots in Athens and Jerusalem drew heavily from both and continues to be uniquely open to other cultures and influences. The West is also more accepting than other civilisations of transmitting other influences in their whole form into its own, he argues.
Rémi Brague is Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Religious Philosophy at the University of Paris, the Sorbonne, and the Romano Guardini Chair at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He is a member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques and has had visiting professorships with Penn State, Boston University, Boston College, Trinity College (Dublin), Universidad de Navarra, and Università San Raffaele (Milan).
His published books in English include Eccentric Culture, The Wisdom of the World, The Law of God, The Kingdom of Man, The Legend of the Middle Ages, On the God of the Christians, Anchors in the Heavens, Moderately Modern, The Legitimacy of the Human, Curing Mad Truths.

There is no such thing as collective guilt and hence, collective atonement. I disagree with his claim that we should seek forgiveness: forgiveness from whom? Whatever historical sins were committed, were done so by individuals, and the sins of the Father shall not be visited upon the son. The West was and is the best because it never lost that spark of freedom, first kindled in Athens, while all around it were despotisms of every stripe. The crisis of confidence in the West today is precisely because we have become too deferential to these other cultures of which he cites - who ironically, all want to immigrate to the West!

Freedom is a very modern concept and very few people in the west believe in it , they may want it for themselves but not for others ! The west deliberately distance itself from the rest of world while trying to show fake unity among its components , Arrogance is a fatal mistake and the decadence is real just look at Gaza when most western medias and elites failed to demonstrate even basic decency ?? I mean the NYT fakes a whole story of rape and get away with it ?!
