Because the story of Eren and his friends is ultimately that: a tragedy. A tragedy of an idealist who had to watch his friends and himself stain his hands with blood. A tale of utterly devoted love, with such intensity and fire... only to forever have it unrequited until it's too late to matter. And a tale of a garden-variety idiot, who watched his home be destroyed, and somehow got his hands on god-like power and decided to become a menace to the world with that power. And it is a warning of the horrors of war, and of the danger of human nature and how we seek conflict.
