Happy to put you fears to rest, these are RFID tags like you have in your credit card. They aren't actively transmitting anything unless a reader with the correct frequency is in close enough proximity to activate it. It's also not recording anything, it has a pre-determined serial number stored on it and that's it.

But if you go to a lake that people are surveying for fish stocks, your ingested serial tag may pop up and give the scientists an aneurysm trying to figure out where the fuck this oceanic salmon's pit tag came from when the only fish in the lake are bass and you're 10,000 km from the nearest ocean

01:40 When matches were new people would keep them in fancy boxes like this, take a look at google and you'll find hundreds of pictures of them made of precious metals. They were quite a bit longer than modern matches as they could be unpredictable when ignited, so you'd want your hand to be well away from the hot end. They were sometimes called 'Lucifers' due to the strong sulphur smell they'd give off.

13:20 yes, that lat/long is _very_ specific. 14 decimal places of latitude and 16 decimal places of longitude is enough to pinpoint a location to within an area that's about a nanometre north/south and 6 picometres east/west (that is, a billionth of a metre by 6 trillionths of a metre). That's pretty precise. For comparison, that's approximately 3 times the area of a single hydrogen atom.
@sourestcake
@sourestcake Жыл бұрын
Most of that is probably just error, though. Computers sometimes print values with way more numbers than necessary, either because the binary number can be read back losslessly from the decimal representation, or just in case someone needs it.

What's worse: A Mushroom taking over the home or Termites? Depends on your Priorities...A Mushroom isn't likely to damage the house supports enough to cause it to fall down the way Termites can (and, if not stopped, WILL), however, Termites aren't likely to release spores and toxins that can make you extremely sick or even dead that way a Fungus can... Personally, I believe the Fungus is worse... Termites are relatively easy to get rid of, expensive when you have to rip a wall apart and replace the joists and studs, but easy... A Fungus however is MUCH harder to get rid of due to the microscopic spores it releases that cause new infestations if the remediation company you hire isn't thorough enough when they clean the home...and molds are Fungi...
@justalittleturtle5600
@justalittleturtle5600 Жыл бұрын
As someone who had termites in their house, I can confirm they are NOT always easy to remove. Sometimes they’re not always in the house, and are in trees nearby. So even if you manage to get them all out of your house, if you’re unaware of the other termites in the trees, they can move back in. Which is what happened to us. A little buggers even caused a massive oak tree to fall down inches from our house. They were destroying one whole side of our house before we finally got rid of them through multiple sessions with an exterminator. AND THEY CAME BACK, THE TREE TERMITES! Yeah, it was like a two-year problem, and they were really annoying. Not deadly though. I will be way more afraid of having toxic fungus in the house. Not all fungus is toxic (enough to cause serious health effects, at least) but black mold, that stuff’s scary.

10:50 im a farmkid, and we have what is called a bank barn, its a barn built partway into the side of a hill, it gives easy access both floors and helps with temperatures, our barn is around 100 years old and bank barns have been built at least since the 1660s, the livestock usually live in the 1st floor, and the 2nd and 3rd floors are for storage of food bedding, and other things it does help with temperature, the ground often is colder or warmer than the temperature of the air, in winter the ground is warmer, and in summer the ground is cooler when going inside our barn's 1st floor you can instantly feel the temperature difference, and the further you walk inside towards the part of the barn that is in the ground the most, the more it gets to be colder/warmer, id say at least 10-20 degrees warmer or colder often in old barns there are cracks between the boards sometimes enough to even fit a finger in them, and those boards are pretty thin too, so having the walls be partially made out of the ground traps heat better in the winter, and it can get much warmer than the outside when the livestock is in the barn adding additional heat from their bodies

Ya those old outlets actually can be. I work in construction and we were doing demolition on an old lake view cabin that had the same exact outlets. We had the electrician there that day and he was about to turn off the power when all of a sudden we hear an audible pop coming from the second floor where we found that the outlet had combusted causing part of the insulation to ignite which we promptly tore out of the wall and stomped out. Never trust old and outdated items that run on electricity.

11:06 yes, it actually does a really good job. Soil acts as an impressive insulator, and what is in the soil can affect its effectiveness. It also helps prolong the lifespan of the home and makes it more resilient to earthquakes, though likely those 2 factors were not as considered during construction. If you want some cool looking bonus examples, there's a style of Nordic infrastructure where stuff is built into the terrain and it's absolutely beautiful.

I think my favourite part of these is guessing what it is! Edit: 5:49 I actually knew this one!!! I took a wildland firefighting class, they will also huck fire grenades that create small fires at my department! We watched one do it's thing in a controlled demonstration!! And I totally agree about not being paid enough. In my state at least, the town budget is not big enough to handle fire grenades. Ours is from the county over. Edit 2: 10:38 To answer the question, I think it might be effective? I know to change the temperature of air take (generally) a lot more effort than the ground. I personally find the air temperature to be more consistent than the ground, since the ground can transfer heat faster than air.

Yes the sunken houses do save on energy, especially when done with a green (growing) roof. The main problem with them, besides fire hazards, is there can be gases (Radon) underground that are leaking into the house. Toxic, cancerous, and just plain deadly (radioactive). If you have one of these houses you have to have a gas detection system similar to smoke detectors.

I gotta say, learning about cruise ships is hilarious if you've never been on one and terrifying if you have. You expect all of this weird machinery to be important for navigation or ventilation or whatever, but it is literally a thing that they put pointless nonsense like that tube on cruise ships to make it look like there is more machinery and functionality than there is. Even going back to the big liners like the Titanic they'd add decorative smokestacks that didn't do anything and weren't connected to the engines because people look at a ship and think "wow, this ship has all sorts of technology on it that I don't understand! The company must be going above and beyond and making sure they've got all the newest technology to make sure I'm safe and taken care of!" When the thing is actually a below-the-bare-minimum skeleton of decades old parts from decommissioned ships that's only allowed on the ocean because they paid off the despot of the tax haven they registered it in.

The underground house is in my town. There are many of those here. Usually built in the 1940s. Refered to as "Hope Houses". The owner would build the basement and live in it until they are able to afford (or hope) to build the main floor of the house.

This is one of my favourite subreddits since it's always a fun little boost of random knowledge. Will I ever use this knowledge? Unlikely. But... It's neat. :3

There’s quite a few houses built into hills where I live. They’re really good at conserving heat or cool air. I know someone who owns one and they even have solar panels and the energy company sends her a 25$ check every month

People on that Subreddit be like: >Hey I have this shoe print, can someone identify it? >>Yeah sure, Here is the exact shoe and shoe size, also the print looks clean, so the shoes must be new, so here is a list of everyone who bought that shoe in the 12 months. Actually I also just hacked the Police Database in your town (don't ask how I located you) and found that "this criminal" owns the exact shoe and was arrested 3 months ago for another similar theft, he is on parole btw.
