Our dept. still uses tappers. We have 3 firehouses and they all have them. They have been working for 100 years and never fail. Just have to wind it every so often and change the paper rolls.

Before they can search for victims firefighters first have to face the fire. I'm sure Boston truckies does primary as soon as they arrive on scene while engine company attacks the fire. life always comes before fire.

Wait, did I just hear narrator say the fire recruits here circa 1997 at the Boston fire academy range in age here from 22-59 years old?!?#@ I thought the maximum age for civil service was way way lower than 59.

I think this was way before they made the cutoff for most towns and cities 32 years old

Most civil service towns and cities have an upper age limit nowadays

If their 'gear' is only 40lb then it's lightweight stuff. A fully rigged BA set in the UK at that time was 48lbs on its own.

You cannot make a firefighter out of someone who isn't born to do it. Yes they can 'qualify' someone but those who aren't born to it rarely make good firefighters and there are some 'not so good' firefighters who choose a different career path than operational duties. Sadly, many acquire very senior rank. A 59 year old recruit????? Crikey in the UK at that time we could retire at 50 if we have completed 25 years and at 55 retirement is a given unless yearly extensions are granted but even then it's for non-operational duties.
