Transferring PhD programs is common but few people openly talk about changing PhD programs. There are several reasons why people change or transfer PhD programs:
1. PhD candidates learnt about what they like to do.
2. PhD students did not get a long with some aspect of their current program.
3. PhD students did not perform well with their current program, and switch to other programs.
The problem that you have when you switch PhD programs is to communicate that you are doing so to the outside world because of point one. Outside audiences might infer that you are some how difficult to get along with or that you are not good enough for their program.
The key is to come up with an excellent rationale to show others that you are interested in the new program. Read up on the program, and try to craft a paper that fits the interests of the new program. Your goal is to communicate that the new area fits what you are interested in.
Some other tips:
1. Switch to the new program sooner rather than later. If you do not like the material that you are learning, it does not get better.
2. Try to not communicate the switch is due to the difficultly of the program or due to your distaste for the material. All PhD programs are difficult. They are meant to be. Avoid switching because of the difficultly - it is not going to be easier in their other area.
3. Look at the long-run. Most roles change with time in any field. What are the people in your field doing 10 years from now? Is this something that you want to be doing?
4. Build your own PhD program. If the ideal program does not exist, build it yourself. Nothing stops you from exploring in graduate school, or doing visiting positions at other schools.
5. The current program is likely going to persuade you from leaving the program - they have invested in you and want to see that you are going to make their program look good.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

Hello Sir! First I just want to say thank you so much for this channel it has literally been a godsend. I too am a first generation college student and now graduate school student. I really appreciate how you have talked about the emotional aspects of academia for first-generation students as well as given program information. This particular video is right on time for me as I am considering this right now. I am considering switching masters programs Because I find that my heart is just not in to the field I am currently in and have found something that interests me more that I could see myself pursuing a PhD in. Again I can’t thank you enough for these wonderful videos. Thank you for your good heart and wanting to pay it forward!

Dear Prof Maslach. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. Even though you describe really well some personal aspects of deciding to switch PhD programmes, I think there are other reasons, external to students themselves, that are worth considering. For instance, lack of PhD funding (that happened to me in Germany) or undesired changes in your supervision arrangements. In my current case, after my first year my main supervisor has suddenly decided to retire and there is not another suitable mentor in the same programme. My University has decided that I must change from my PhD in Law to the PhD programme in Arts, Design and Architecture where my second supervisor is affiliated. Despite having an interdisciplinary project between law and arts, that change makes not sense for me, not only from an epistemological perspective but also in terms of my future academic career. Maybe this fear is baseless, as a person in my university said the important thing is to have a PhD degree no matter what the PhD is "in". I am still not convinced...

Hello! thank you for the video. I am in my 2nd year of Ph.D., and the PI lacks th eresearch aptitude and is not at all supportive for collaborative work. His agenda is to make me stay in the University for 5 years, and somehow complete the formality. two seniors in my lab have left already for the same reason. i will be receiving phd candidature certificate (course credits) in a month, I'd like to know if i should apply to other universities as a fresh candidate or transfer the credits. i really love my work and i m extremely passionate about it.

Any advice on applying to new programs if previous advisor left academia? Saw other videos of yours on the subject but ultimately I tried to switch projects with a different advisor for a year and I just don’t have the same passion I do for what I originally came here to do. Should I transfer or gut it out for 2-3 more years?

Hi, thank you for the video...I am a little more than 6 months into my PhD...I do not dislike the coursework but absolutely am failing miserably to like my current project...I am trying very hard to like it...and now that I think about it...maybe transferring is a good idea...I do not see this project aiding me much in the future...I have sought my PI's help multiple times to see the bigger picture but he has not been very convincing or forthcoming with providing me the necessary information...any advice other than what you have said in the video

In my case, I'm considering transferring bacause I'm taking useless coursework on education that I won't even use in linguistics.. I wanted to focus on my PhD and the projects I want to do... but the readings take up my time. They don't require you to get an A in coursework, but there's fucking discussions every time, projects that require you to comment on each other's thoughts. So what do you do? You read and prepare because you don't want to look stupid. I tried this week - and professors would check if I'm okay. so what do I do? I'm sorry I;m so frustrated, so pissed. I'm not getting things done because of coursework I don't even need in my project.. I'm so tired of this. I made a bad decision, a really bad decision... and it's hard to get out. It's been a month into the program and I'm searhing how to get out

Sir. I recently got email from a professor she's offering me a position ( i scored good in interview) and final. Merit list will be published soon. But she wants me to confirm that i will work on her project. Now I am. Confused since I also applied to other universities too. And i am waiting for thier results too. So what shud I do in this situation sir? Should I say yes to her. But If got selected in other university then it will be fine to say no after saying yes before? Or shud I leave this opportunity? Please guide

Is it a good reason to Transfer PhD because someone got chance to a "Better Ranked" University?
@m.k.h.2718
@m.k.h.2718 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your financial situation and your values. If going to a better ranked university also means more scholarship money and less debt, then by all means go for it. But if it will shackle you down in exorbitant debt whereas staying put where you already are avoids debt, then you should think about it carefully.
