Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is located in Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Lord Ranganatha is considered to be an incarnation of Vishnu.
According to historians, the kingdoms that ruled South India (mainly the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas and Nayaks) also renovated the temple from time to time and built the temple on the basis of Tamil architecture. The temple is made of granite stone but the idol of the main deity in the temple is made of stucco. A 1000 years old mummy of Guru Ramanujacharya, a philosopher of Vaishnava culture, is also kept in the temple. This temple is the only temple in the world, where a real dead body is kept inside a Hindu temple and worshiped for many years. An annual festival is celebrated every year in the temple. The idols of deities are also adorned with ornaments during the festival. The local people celebrate this festival with great pomp.
