Ma’am This rendition of Bageshree is very special to me. Let me tell you why. In the olden days, an artiste could only get to earn the epithet ‘Ustad’ or ‘Pandit’ when conferred by his Guru. It was not an automatic fallout of a certain number of years of training and riyaaz. Nor was it an acknowledgement of his singing skills. It would only happen when his Guru felt that his singing had attained the quality of sublimity - an element of transcendence that had the power to elevate a listener emotionally and spiritually. Sadly, these recognitions happened only with male artistes, since singing as an art form wasn’t looked at very favourably for women of the time. This strange practice of conferring titles only to male artistes lives on even today. Had I the power to change things, I’d unhesitatingly confer you the title of ‘Ustad’ or ‘Pandit’ just basis this one short rendition, or as you say, ‘practice session’, of Bageshree.
