Rabbi David Wolpe on "The Portal", Episode

  Рет қаралды 108,375

Күн бұрын

Leading Conservative Rabbi David Wolpe drops by The Portal to chat with Eric to discuss what everyone might be getting wrong about the divide between religion and rationality by focusing on the existence or non-existence of god(s). Eric starts off with a gambit by asking the Rabbi what the question of god's existence might be crowding out and the conversation goes from there to unusual places (e.g. "Was Seinfeld secretly a course in Talmudic law with a laugh track?"). Subscribe to this channel and click the bell to make sure you are updated when the next episode of "The Portal" drops on KZfaq. And thanks for watching The Portal!

I am an atheist and this is the best discussion of faith, values, religion, belief, skepticism, and every related topic that I have ever listened to. Compare the wisdom and insight expressed by these two men to the trite garbage spewed by EVERY TV evangelist and you will understand why I listened to this with intention and attention while every TV evangelist whom I have stumbled upon was revolting and disgusting within minutes and I could not tolerate for more than a few minutes. This is priceless. Thank you for posting this in this time of extreme intolerance and partisan bickering.

@eblman5218 It seems that religion has played a significant part in the evolution of human society, most likely due to the "community" effect which creates solidarity and common goals. This effect has seemed to be positive overall, in spite of the many negative impacts religious extremism has had upon society. While religion brings people together, it also divides them, often violently. It is a terrible contradiction with which I have struggled for a lifetime. I simply found myself unable to believe as I grew into adulthood. The foundational stories seemed so childish and improbable. The worst effect of religion, in my opinion, is that it trains people to believe in nonsense unsupported by evidence, and this credulity spills over into all aspects of life, leaving people easy victims of hucksters and charlatans, both secular and religious.

The rabbi is a very pleasant speaker to listen to as well. Eric, a conversation that would be fascinating to hear would be one between you and Christopher Langan, with his Cognitive Theoretic Model of the Universe and how it may tie into the nature of reality in a more mathematical/physical way.

I lived with my friend and his family, who was very Greek, for a few years. While I was living with them, I was taught I should sing and play my guitar at all family functions. They said it was because I wasn't any good at cooking. ;) Or in otherwords, everyone should bring what they are good at to the family table. Don't be afraid to share your skills with others everywhere you go. If we were all good at the same things we would have no need for community. All squirrels are good at finding nuts. People are not squirrels. Tradition is what we bring to the table. We don't want a homogenized society, no matter what people have been saying as of late. Keep spreading the truth.

I dont understand, do you see Religion AS God, or like, Im trying to wrap my head around Athiests definition of Religion, cause its a pretty loosely used word lol When you talk about "When religion does....", just exactly WHAT is doing the "does" in that statement? Because Religion can mean a LOT of different things, cuz ya know....there's a lot of different "Religions". And just for reference Religion to me is merely the resultant cultural, and personal expression that adopting a faith brings. But I assure you, most religious talks Ive had with Christians, we dont EVER say what "Religion" does, we talk about what God, or Christ, or Humankind, or even Angels and Demons DO. Like, im saying theres an actual ACTOR in many of my "religious" thoughts. So i just cant wrap my head around most Atheists usage of the word Religion.
@stop7556
@stop7556 5 жыл бұрын
@@Macheako, I will speak for myself as I know some will call those with belief as religious but as I would define non militant atheist like myself. I define religion is a belief structure with an institution. For example a small town with a church who reads the bible and identifies as a sect of Christian but does not report to a higher bureaucratic structure. Then I would not instantly label them as religious. I would just identify them as a group with like minded belief. I guess similar to native american shamanism structure often not. Although yes that can go down the slide of cultism but my point is more so I enjoy when someone who has influence in a large religious structure is bringing the topic back from money power and fear. Feel free to criticize or clarify. I am not 100% certain if I have properly described my stance or view.

I've never commented before on a video but I felt like I had to. Huge fan of Eric's, but I had to clarify the point about Islam and the interpretation of the Quran. While Eric was correct on the 4 schools, what he failed to realize was that these schools exist precisely because there are differing interpretations of the Quran. As David clarified, the Torah is not inherently self explanatory as is the case with the Quran. Great convo though!

Listening to this from Sydney and wanna thank Eric for getting into some of the tensions that I have grappled with myself at a very personal level. I wish he could keep Rabi a bit longer and delve a bit deeper, but Kudos to Rabi for his stamina. Such an honest and humble religious figure, deriving his opinions and understandings from an understanding of the text of his tradition. He was respectful of science and other philosophies and recognised his limitations as a human as he mentioned towards the end. I wonder how fascinating would it be, if Eric could find a similar figure from Islamic world who is able to talk openly and freely without a fear of the loudest mob.

Loved this. Unrelated, really hoping you’re planning on having Thomas Sowell on. I’d love to see him in this format!

One of the least viewed of the series but one of the 'best' conversations ever to have taken place

Beautiful conversation, gentlemen; thank you. I was going to comment about something early on, but wanted to hear the rest first so I just jotted down a few notes. ... that was a mistake because it became pages, might have to explore a few in videos later but some tl;dr bullet points: -big agree on necessary public dialogue regarding the rectification of extremes being vital mode of thinking -i try to never dismiss things out of hand; if i knew everything, i would have a better explanation to explore -absolute faith and absolute atheism both persevere as valid possibilities even with proof for one (or both) sides, like an agnosticism of religious inspiration and rigorous collaboration -love the point about Talmudic humor; envisions culture having pseudo-monolithic backbone, resonating by shared heritage -burden of shepherding birthright enables guidance of tradition in constructed wilderness, but without negating validity of the faith -longest timescale aggregates perspective in retrospective; think Book of Life by your eventual legacy. what remains/proves out to be good is absolute, atemporal morality. -apply same approach to all cultural structures in light of impending post-scarcity -pre-grammar/genetic predisposition for belief very possible. Complexity of genetics in transfer, reception, and reinforcement occurs within and by family stricture; want strong genes? have a strong cultural faith -^Yahweh's deal w Abraham, btw; yes, homosexuality is obviously abomination *to the goals of progeny proliferation* - incompatibility with moral structure is for specific purposes -self hating trope belies aimlessness with energy devoted to pursuing rigorous belief viewed as loss; culturally institutionalized depression -with transparency, age of nuance is no longer an issue of gatekeeping but tiered layers of meaning and decentralized inspiration -compromised institutions are drowning in the shallow end because it was deeper until the water level dropped. still labeled dangerous and the placebo effect is a harsh mistress -Holocaust reconciliation is a point of cultural psyche; good call -mathematic perfection enables pursuit of final few seals with rapidly self-perfecting technology and culture symbiosis, a post-scarcity institutional pursuit unraveling mysteries all the way, mapping the borders and shared spaces amongst faiths and sciences

I just wanted them to discuss one topic; "It's 2019, isn't it time we move past religious beliefs, dogma, doctrine and philosophies, after all, they have had centuries at-bat, still ... all speculation. Why not speak instead about 'proof' and how we can now, through resuscitation SCIENCE, answer the question: 'Does consciousness survive?" After over a decade of research, I find the answer is easily within our reach and yet...crickets.

@@cynthiaclayton4214 the *consensus* is crickets, partially because the question isn't quite valid in its terms - similar to "is water still wet after you split it into individual molecules?" Beginning that conversation depends heavily on the given definition of consciousness (and even life, though often this follows that)

@@rbradhill It's not a consensus of belief I'm waiting for...it's a commitment to turn to science, (as we now have the science!)... to do the research re: does consciousness survive after death?... as millions who have had near-death experiences, report it does through their patterned reports across time, cultures and in spite of various religious beliefs. If the sense of self continues, into what is called 'hyper-reality' after death, then consciousness (the energy of 'self) survives. This needs and now can be confirmed or not, and if it proves so, will be the paradigm shift we need to end the religious and philosophical guessing games.
