No, in the wild rabbits build borrows down & then go up for their dens. Living in rain country I was very worried. Best is to build artificial hills.

Try building a greenhouse style to keep them warm enough in your winters. I'm from Australia, and it's our summers that can kill them because they overheat. We sometimes have to freeze bottles with water and give them that in the heat just to keep them cool enough to live. For you though they probably would literally freeze in your winter. So the added warmth of the greenhouse should help keep them a bit more comfortable good luck Iceman!!!

In the middle ages in the UK, we used to have farms with a rabbit colony on them. The farmer would build a big mound of earth and place the rabbits in the hill, Above the normal ground level and place small trees for a shade over the rabbit holes. Perhaps something for you to think of?

Hmmmm a fruit tree would be ideal like an apple tree. Rabbits LOVE apple branches so you would just leave any that falls and they can eat the fruit. If they start eating the trunk (I'm not sure if they would or not) just fence the tree off say an extra foot from the trunk? If you do fence it off, grow some mint on the inside of the mesh so that when it grows out, it gives the rabbits more food to graze on but they won't kill it because it still has a good amount that they can't get to. A sheet of 1 inch mesh bent around the tree should be enough, and then as it gets bigger you would then add an extra sheet to make it wider again as the trunk grows thicker

I don't think that will work with modern rabbit breeds they'll be easily spotted by predators

We have thought about building a rabbit colony for our rabbits. Maybe one day. We have a concrete slab on our property that we might build it on. We will see. Right now our mommas are having their babies. It’s been a busy spring for us. Baby goats, chicks, ducks etc,. Thanks for sharing. Sorry for your loses. It happens.

So I have a colony style with open hutches for them to get out of the flooding. You can see my bun pen on my channel. But yes build up the dirt to raise up the buckets the girls will learn where it's not safe to put their babies! You are in my prayers!

That’s a bummer that you lost them. We have rabbits but we don’t do the colony we chose to raise them off the ground, I hope you can get it worked out where that doesn’t happen again.

This past season has certainly been a wet one. But, like you said, learning from the worst and with that we can achieve the best. I never want to reach a point where I stop learning. Life is what it is and it shows a hardy character to continue on with everything that you are building even when things keep trying to knock you down. Two thumbs up Willow Creek, another day, another lesson.

We have rocky spoil they will get passed the gravel of thats the liner. My plan is to use air crete or something to make above ground "rabbit tunnels" so its above ground, I can peek in, and it still seems like its under ground to them? If that makes sense. My whole rabbit yard has wire alomg the ground to prevent digging out. Plugging only works so far when you have rabbits working as a team, my girls were working as a team they werent even preggo they just wanted an underground house lol.

Thought you didn't want to get gross... next shot you're flat on the ground shoulder-deep in a rabbit burrow. I say put the buckets on a wire platform over gravel and above the ground and then make a hill around them.

you should put false bottoms in your buckets. if you use something like a things you cool cookies on with a little extra room under them any water will not reach the babies and they will not fall through the holes

Build cages above ground for your pen.Add gravel to your pen and over it add dirt so the rabbits can't dig their own burrows so they have to use the cages for shelter!

we put some smaller gauge wire a few feet up the side of the fence and it lays on top of the ground for a few feet. We then covered it with dirt or other materials. MOST of the time rabbits will dig along the sides of things. We had a few times where the snuck a burrow and dug out. You just have to keep a watchful eye on these sneaky little buns LOL
