Rabbit colonies are a great way to raise rabbits in a naturally setting. Today, we are remodeling the rabbit colony and upgrading the inground bucket burrows. See how we make larger bucket burrows in our colony.

Using farm gate rollers.. I built cages the width of my raised beds.. 10 ft long.. my beds are 36 inches high on level line.. some measure 40 plus inches tall on same level line.. thus the spring loaded gate wheels. I hang rabbit cages in top of cage and chickens dn low.. my xtra roos. They hang out over raised beds a few days then on to the next one.. I have 5 rows of beds.. some have 6 beds some have 4 one is 16 ft long. I will cover with mulch to over winter..when I'm done it will be freezer camp day for the roos.. rabbits go back to their respective collection

Now just to figure out how to keep your old girl the white 🐇 from digging it back out. Maybe once it's packed down and not so fresh she will leave it alone. I'm hoping this works out this time around and you get to use your colony longer next spring.

More fencing. We buried fence all the way under the colony.

how do you deal with urine, eating the grass bald and pests.. ticks, fleas etc.
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 4 ай бұрын
No grass grows in here, we bring grass in for them. Urine soaks into the ground and we use a deep litter method to cover it up. We treat fleas, ticks, and mites with sulfur powder. It works great! We just dust the rabbits in it when they show symptoms. Our farm cats keep snakes and rats away. Never had an issue with them. Cats are amazing! We have 5.

So the top is ok to be clear on the totes? Will it not feel like they are in the open?

Great question. This is the first time we have ever tried the clear ones. I like being able to see into them, but I'm not sure how the rabbits will do. Our kids are due Sunday. If she doesn't seem comfortable in it, I will black it the top

Dumb question but i thought they needed to be in the ground more for the cooling
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 11 ай бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. In the ground would provide the most temperature regulation for the burrows and allow them to stay much cooler, but then we couldn't access the nest boxes to clean them and check on the babies. The solution we have used in the past is the partially bury method and its worked fairly well. If we were going to do in ground burrows, we would just allow the rabbits to dig their own.

I would love to figure out how to do something like this setup without having major snow issues (I'm in Manitoba). This would be great for the cold but snow and the melt cause some big seasonal problems 🙃
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 11 ай бұрын
Maybe do it in an enclosed area with walls to protect from the snow and wind.

I wonder if you could insulate/drain better above groundish with vermiculite, hay and perilite and bunny safe compost?

Watched a video where they used blue insulated coolers for bins.. great for temp regulation. They built on a slope too so water drained away

Wouldnt clear act like a greenhouse? Thought they would like it dark aswell
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 4 ай бұрын
This area never gets sun. It's always in the shade. If it had sun on it, it would. During the summer the exposed side of the rabbit gets shade cloth as well to keep the rabbits cool. If it was in the sun, it would act as a greenhouse.

Hi Megan! What do you mean by “breeding season is about to start”? Does that mean you only breed rabbits in fall?
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 11 ай бұрын
We can't breed in the summer because it's too hot. We have to wait for the temperatures to cool down. We breed fall, winter, and spring. As long as temperatures are below 85 during the day and 70s at night, we can breed. When temperatures are above that, it's hard on does to be pregnant and you can loose them to heat stress. Some bucks will go heat sterile at temperatures above that. It's nature's way of protecting the does.

Were does the buck stay? This is a colony setup?
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 6 ай бұрын
This is a colony. I move my bucks around. Currently he is in the colony for breeding, but when I want to control breeding he either goes in a rabbit tractor or cage depending on season of the year. During our rainy/hurricane season I prefer my rabbits in a cage to keep them up out of any possible flooding.

@LivingtheHightLife thank you very much. I'm retiring to my offgrid ranch. And live off land hunting deer,bear, squirrels, etc but want meat rabbits enough to feed me and family to start and maybe to sell to neighbors in future. I love rabbit hunting, but it's alot of work for little reward. I was thinking 1or2 buckes and 3 does. But don't if I make a colony burrow system if worth i, or just do cages. Thx for help. Please keep videos. MAX
@LivingtheHightLife
@LivingtheHightLife 6 ай бұрын
@@mad151maxx4 we breed our does 6 times a year, and they average 7 kits a litter. So with 3 does you would be looking at around 130 rabbits born each year. It adds up quickly!
