Rabbit Hutch Upgrade | DIY | winter farm project

Woo 2 new rabbit hutches for our Holland Lop does! Their previous hutches were perfectly serviceable and we’ll keep them for future separation of litters. Our ladies just deserved some more room, we had the materials on hand, and some cold and rainy winter weather that made for perfect project undertaking in our garage.
These are definitely the trickiest project I’ve ever taken on, but so rewarding. It took 1 week to build both, cost about $100 in hardware, we had the lumber on site already.
2 very happy buns!

They look nice. My only redflag I see is the chicken wire bottom. If you're planning to move these which you will have to do to get them off their poop, consider putting 1x2 slats on the bottom. Space them around 3" apart and it will slide much better and give them a better access to grass and dig a little bit but not enough to leave. But you need to move them every day to avoid cocci. They're cool little hutches for sure. Wish I had the ability to sit and draw it out first. Might save me a few hrs of doing and redoing.

Great video! We have chickens for eggs. I've harvested some roosters and do not like the process. I grew up hunting whitetail deer and swamp rabbits. I'm thinking I'll greatly prefer raising and harvesting rabbits for meat over chickens.

Hey! Id really recommend putting a piece of wood where the wire bottom part of the hutch is, its really bad for there feet as they can get a condition called “hooks foot” and its extremely painful. No hate just trying to help :)

@@nicoleellis6560 Hey yeah, the top section, its overtime can cause harm to thier feet and could become very painful.

Curious, how do you move them off their poop? Apparently they are heavy, maybe putting them on either wheels or on stilts. You’d have to change out the bottom wire as per predators. They look nice

I have been meaning to add wheels to the bottom of the hutch end, that way I can roll it. Right now I just lift and move but you’re right they’re heavy!

I did 6’x4’x4.5’ the run section is 2’ tall which is plenty for the rabbits, and the hutch part you can make as tall or short as you want depending on your height - you need you be able to reach in to change bedding etc so it should be below your armpits x

Some like rabbits, i dont. I prefer chicken s. Wabbits looks like rats. But i love yer builds though. You are a versatile young gal. Good luck, missy, again i caint eat rabbits.

I love chickens too! These rabbits are pets, not for eating, if I was going to eat them I’d prefer to hunt them to help manage the population and to learn a new skill set 👍🏼

Everything is good accept one crucial mistake. Your rabbits are gonna get sick or possibly die because of that stain. Stain is very toxic and rabbits are known to chew and eat wood which meant eating cancerous toxic stain. Shoulda thought that through too.

I don’t understand why people raise rabbits. Not a lot of meat on them and they don’t provide anything else. Why waste the time and money on them? Please help.

For the low fat in the meat and the poop for your garden

They might not have a lot of meat on one, but they give anywhere from 5-16 kits a litter, and their poop is probably one of the best fertilizers there is. They also provide fur and companionship. You can sell the kits as breeders, meat, or pets for extra money, and they don’t cost much to raise. Plus, their meat is one of the healthiest and most nutritious. And I think it’s pretty obvious that home grown meat is better than store bought commercial. I bit into a piece of glass imbedded in my chicken once…
