How to grow and care for the Rabbit's foot fern. In this video i'm showing the Humata tyermanii which is the White Rabbit's Foot Fern. These ferns make excellent houseplants as they can dry out a little more than a lot of ferns sold to be grown indoors. #FernFridays is all about having a good plant chat! Get involved and comment below with your experiences growing the Rabbit's foot fern. :)

I love my rabbits foot fern! It's a real toughy relative to other ferns. I take cuttings of the rhizome and lay them across the top of the soil, maybe with a small stone to push them gently into the soil and keep them in place, kept moist with spraying, never had a cutting fail.

I've had my rabbit's foot fern for over 3 years and it has been one of the easiest plants I've ever kept. I 've in Colorado and I summer it on a shady balcony. I bring it indoors before the first of October. Never let the sun hit it, mist occasionally and kept it on the moist side. I'd keep it near an indoor fountain.

I was inspired to try and take better care of my rabbits foot recently. I couldnt understand why new growth was dying. your video about it getting dry described mine to a T, but I water it all the time? I checked the soil and realized my baby was bone dry. The soil was such low quality full of coconut fiber, the soil was acting hydrophobic. long story short after watching your video i went to repot and dropped my fern on its head!!!! shes looking ok and im hoping the better soil will help. after 1 day it's already standing up better and not as yellow. the new unfurled bits that were healthy yesterday have died off on the top, but i already see new ones springing up and hope to see them finally successfully unfurl.

When I was a teenager back in the 1970's I grew a few ferns on a (groovy) formica coffee table by my bedroom window with moderate success. I never tried growing this one though. Our climate is just so dry, I think I will give this one a go in our bathroom as at least there is a teeny bit of humidity there. Great to see ferns in general are making a comeback.

Love my rabbits foot fern as well. I am in a 7 to 8 zone and mine loves living on the back porch where it gets direct sun first thing in the morning for a short time then indirect sun the rest of the day. It flourishes there during all the warm months and then I bring it inside for the months where there is a threat of frost. It definitely prefers outside life and thins out during the dormant months. I just repotted it after it got HORRIBLY overgrown and root bound. I went way too long. I’m going to try rooting some rhizomes so we shall see how that goes as I’ve never done it before.

Walmart had a bunch of plants shoved to the side to make room for Christmas decorations. Rows upon rows upon rows of dead and dying plants. Sad English ivies, unidentifiable crispy leafy plants, a droopy philodendron of some sort simply labeled as "houseplant". The only 3 plants that looked like they were not only still alive, but still vibrant (though with some dying fronds), were 3 rabbit foot ferns. Generally speaking, in my experience, plants that grow from ribosomes or bulbs tend to be hardier than standard leaf/stem/roots sort of plants. So much energy can be stored in those ribosomes for emergency situations. Like stressed-out employees forgetting about them as they prepare for the busy season, lol. I felt so bad for the little guys I purchased one, but as soon as I got home I thought "drats, I should have grabbed the other two, too." lol. If they're still there next time I probably will. If they're still there, I see a #fernball in my future, lol. Thanks for the video. :)

The rabbit's foot started dying within a few months as did the staghorn. The staghorn I managed to save and it's growing nicely again while the rabbit's foot was dead a few weeks later. The maiden hair, meanwhile, is thriving the whole time..

I picked up the pot and they had it marked as a lemon fern, but then my finger touched one of the furry parts and I nearly screamed when I looked because I literally thought it was a tarantula coming out of the soil. I gave it a goog and realized it was a rabbit foot fern, not a lemon. I bought him.

I've had mine about a week now and I fret and fuss over it but don't really physically mess with it aside from misting it a few times a day, lol. I love ferns so much but oof do they trigger some plant mom anxiety in me.

I can relate to being triggered and feeling the plant anxiety! Hopefully this one will do well for you and be an easy houseplant. :)

I love my rabbits feet.. they seem to just be happy no matter what I do to them. One of my cats hates one of then specifically and is constantly knocking it off surfaces and out of the pot, but as long as I mist it every morning, we’re fine. I wouldn’t even be able to tell if the pots weren’t different colors. I was wondering if you’re supposed to thin them out somehow? They’ve grown so thick so quickly and I’m very new to plants.

I have had mine for a few weeks now, he started to turn a bit yellow/brown - I think he just needs some more misting! Fingers crossed. And now I want to try and do a clipping and get another one going- it wont cause damage to the main plant if I cut one of his '"feet"?

Hi, great video. One question. This plant, it's very hard to know when to water because mine's soil never gets dried (always contains some moisture). Normally I've been told that I need to wait for the soil to get dried before the next watering. Is it ok to water this plant before the soil is dried? Thanks.

They should be called spider ferns, hihihi!! They kind of freak me out, even though I don't mind (small) spiders, I find them fascinating, really. I guess I'm not a fern person either, and yet I've just boiught two, hoping I can actually care for them. Thank you for the tips!!!!!

yes spider ferns would be a more accurate description! I'm glad they call them rabbit's foot fern though, much more cute! lol!

I love your videos! Always cheer me up and relaxing to watch ☺🙌 I have a question for anyone that can help, I just got a little maidenhair fern from lowes in this koko ball planter thing, they put it in a paper cup container in there with no holes and its water logged and it stinks a little bit so I'm panicking. I cant find any good info on how to help waterlogged and repotting it should I hide 3% hydrogen peroxide on its soil?? I hope somone can help! Thank you anyway

Well hello, Healing Indigo! Great name! If it is stinky then I would go ahead and just repot it. Get as much of the old and stinky soil out off the roots as possible and repot it with a potting mix that drains well. Using a standard all-purpose potting mix then adding some sand and orchid bark works well. I know saying "some" is rather vague. Maybe enough bark and sand so that it makes up for 1/4 to 1/3 of the soil blend. Peroxide works well for disinfection but since ferns have delicate roots I would be cautious if you decide to also spray the roots before repotting.

hey! i bought one of these from the clearance section. its rhizomes are so brown, but the tips are white. is there a way to fix this? i read they need more moisture, but i was wondering if these would turn back to being white or if i should look for new growth to determine if i’m doing a good job at reviving it sorry for the long question !

I love these ferns but they keep getting scale and it's so hard to get rid of them as the frans are so delicate. I have been using a mix of rubbing alcohol and water and wiping them off branch by branch. It takes forever, inevitably I miss some and they come back and spread to other plants! Makes me want to cry! Ugh, so frustrating. Do you have an easier way you get rid of scale and keep it gone? Thank you so much for your video!

Bought two of these today, small ones. Didn't think much of the hairy roots until you mentioned they look like tarantula legs. I am scared to death of spiders. Would it be alright to trim them so they won't be seen?

Lmaoo I got one like a year ago. It's pretty darn sad right now. Like its doing okay but definitely could be a lot better. Not as full as the ones in the video but a lot larger in size. I live in a location with extremely low humidity so I am going to find a dish to put rocks and water in (I mist it as well but poor b doin a sad)

It's winter here and my rabbits foot fern is suffering. It's near a wood stove. I've thinking of repotting into a terrarium for more humidity. Many of the fern fronds have dried up and I've removed. It's operation rehab my fern. Any suggestions?

I dont mind the foots look, what I mind is the mess the "foots" make. The plants are looking great, they are doing great at the place I put them, but they are standing on white furniture and the "foots" keep dropping some sort of dry mess that tend to break down when I try to wipe them off and I end up smearing them all over instead.

What are your thoughts on using a self-watering pot (pot within a pot style) for this fern or others?
@bitsnharry
@bitsnharry Жыл бұрын
Actually that’s the kind of arrangement I have for mine. They have the little string hanging down from the bottom of the pot and I have them in an outer pot so that the string hangs down into the water but the pot doesn’t. They’re going to town!

Do you think this could be grown as an emergent plant with the finer subterranean roots in an aquarium?
