This is a common concern for new rabbit breeders. They have a first time mom that has a little of rabbits but they never see her taking care of them and assume that she is abandoning her litter. In this video I discuss why that is probably not the case, how you can tell for sure, and a few things you can do if it is the case.

I had that exact concern. First time mama. My very first rabbits. Never saw her go in her nest for more than 5 seconds. It's been 48 hours. They're all squirming but I don't want to touch them or disturb them too much.

Hi! So my i was surprised with 5 kits yesterday morning, i didn’t realize my bunny was pregnant. She had them on my bed squeezed in between my pillows. So once the babies were clean, i moved them over to a diy nest box (i used a storage container, cut out a hole, and placed hay with a soft t shirt and her fur pullings). I left them there over night and today they’re still alive and moving. my only concern is, she keeps pulling her fur and taking it to my bed. Im not sure if she thinks her kits are there, but i placed the nest box in her general area and i don’t think she’s going in there. she only fed them once they were on the bed and placed all the fur she had stored in her mouth over the babies. And when i checked the babies, 3/5 had round bellies and 2 of them looked kinda small.

But what if you have a rabbit that is not a first time mother that has babies that she did not feed and have no fat bellies and die of starvation? It’s been very hot here and I’m wondering if the heat could have an impact on her care of this litter.

My New Zealand just gave birth three days ago and she’s made a beautiful nest. She only had three and the one born on the wire was gone by the time I noticed. They had a fat belly last time I checked, but today I just went out and they were wrinkly and dehydrated looking. I held momma on my lap and let the babies nurse until they were plumped up. I hope she nurses them because that’s stressful.

Hi Chris -Thank you for posting this! My question for you is I have 3 day old kits (mom is a mini holland lop) and they are warm and wiggly, but I wouldn't say their bellies look super distended or full. The mom (from what I saw) didn't feed her first litter (back in APril) so I'm fearful she may do this again. However, we're optimistic it was 'first time mom' syndrome. From your experience, should I attempt to supplement or potentially let them die again if they start to go that direction? Thank you for any thoughts!

Hi, my doe gave birth to 6 babies a week ago today and I am little concerned that 4 of them don't seem to be very big. 2 of them have nice full bellies and the others are rather small. A couple of the kits found their way out of the nest and luckily I found them and put them back. Would they have wandered because they are hungry. Should I intervene and feed them with KMR or goats milk or should I just leave it?

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 3 жыл бұрын
you can touch them and not worry at all about mother abandoning them. As far as warmth. As long as they are in the nest box and have plenty of straw to snuggle into, and mother pulled fur to cover them up with, they should be fine. If you are overly concerned, you can bring the nest box in for the night and return it to the cage the next morning. I hope that helps.

Well, you see now its 5th of August and I bought my bunny at 1st April and the female one just a after my birthday ( she was bought on 11th of April ) Well we were surprised today cause we knew that she was gonna have babies but you see the 7 newborn babies were not given birth into the next box they were all around the hutch. I quickly called my mother and my grandpa and they helped me make them a nest which was quite very big. Normally I gave both the parents over food needed but when she was pregnant and especially when she got her kits I was like opening a health diet shop . Well actually she is eating like a dinosaur she eats indian spinach much more than usual , she's eating tons of cabbages , guavas and like everything. But I was never offended on them cause my mother says that I am a pure animal lover well animal + insects lover . Well but whenever I saw he she was full and I thought she feeded them but the were all hungry from the birth so our neighbours who had rabbits once said us to hold the female rabbit on her back and take her babies one by one to her chest. Well I did as the said and I got different scratches and some that bleed but I am happy the babies are all full and yes there are 7 babies . But I am not still offended of the mother cause it's her first time . ☺

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
I am sorry for the slow response. Bottle feeding doesn't usually work that well (like you said). It is very rare for a mother not to feed her young so I would suggest just letting her take care of them. 14 is a big litter so it is possible that you will lose one or two. That is just part of raising rabbits unfortunately.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 3 жыл бұрын
It is probably best to just leave them with the mother. The odds of them over eating is very unlikely. You shouldn't have to help them out at all. The one rabbit that you described sounds like it may have bloat. Unfortunately, that is very difficult to treat in young rabbits. In older rabbits you can try to treat it with infant gas drops but young rabbits are much more sensitive and I am afraid there might not be much you can do. I wish I had a better solution for you.
@hayaalkaabi8969

@@Slightlyrednecked I've brought them to the vet and I've figured it out it was actually bloat as you said. Sadly most the litter died of the cause. But I managed to save 2 by putting them near a heater and it surprisingly worked and they haven't got bloat but don't think they will survive but I hope they will thrive and wont pass away hopefully they wont get the same cause as their fellow siblings. Do you think I should let them drink normally and nothing will happen ?Or I should just feed them a bit each day? Thank you for the reply ill see what I can do with the rest. Thank you

I have a mother rabbit who is very aggressive towards her babies. She has thrown 4 of them out of the cage and one of those died already. It has only been about 1 and a half days since they were born. I saw her digging in the nest box right on top of them and was wondering if that was how they are falling out of the cage? Also, she didn’t pull very much fur so I substituted with some from another doe, was that the reason she’s rejecting them? They are also never covered in fur anytime I go out there even though I always cover them up again with as much fur as I can find. I ended up taking them out and they are inside the house now. Was that what I should have done or should I put them back in with her?

Hi, We had a first time mom that did a great jobb nesting and delivered the babies in there. But after 3 days one baby died, day after two more and day after the last two. they looked as she didn't feed them... looked very skinny, never a round belly. We hadn't had bunnies before, this is a first time for us as well. we tried putting the babies on her so they latched... but it seemed that she had no milk. The last two we tried "bottle feeding them" but I think it was too late. Is this normal? could it be that she had no milk?

First time mom and everything looked good for the first week - 7 kits born in nest box, lots of fur, round bellies. But mama was not happy and growled at me when I occasionally checked on them. At a week old they were leaving the nest box in search of mom. I wondered if they were hungry as this had never happened with week-old kits leaving the box. Still growling when I checked. At two weeks all kits died but one. I took him inside and am hand feeding him. He was very bony and scrawny but strong when I rescued him. Five days later he’s begun to plump up and appears to be doing fine. Why would the mom stop feeding the kits after a week? Was it because I had handled them briefly several times? And should I give her another chance as a mom? Thanks so much for any advice you can offer.
@Heather-xm9ul
@Heather-xm9ul 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not because you handled them. A breeder I recently bought from warned me about my doe. She's a good cooperative rabbit, but as she gets ready to kindle, she gets very cranky and defensive. Apparently she's outright hostile if she has a nest full of babies.

I've been breeding rabbits for 2 years now but i just encountered one of the does that doesn't feed her babies. I don't know why. It's her first babies and because the cage is not suitable i had to move her with her litter to a different cage. You think that might have caused her behavior?
@lovemybabygoat
@lovemybabygoat 3 жыл бұрын
Moving them could do it. Try putting her in the box with them. Make sure she is able to feel secure and is not disturbed by other animals. You probably moved her to a larger cage. A cage that is just big enough for the nest box, the feed box and water access, and enough space for mom to sit outside the nest box is large enough, until the babies start moving out of the nest box also. Rabbits are comfortable in small spaces.

It shouldn't. it may affect their overall health though. I think I would add some lights on a timer to make sure they get about 12 or so hours of "daylight" a day. Lack of light can lead to some depression in humans and I am sure it can do the same with animals. Don't worry about the kits though, she will take care of them just fine.

Hello I spoke with you the other day, was just wondering if you have any suggestions on rabbits and fleas? The male and female are separated due to her having kits. Yesterday I used coconut oil on the male, to help suffocate the fleas. I'm and now the female seems to have a couple on her and wondering if I should do the same, but also how do I treat the kits, as one of them had a flea transfer onto them while being fed by the mother. I don't want to hurt them with anything, but fleas can also do more damage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You!!

If they are meat rabbits I would avoid any kind of pesticide. I would try food grade (make sure it is food grade) diatomaceous earth. Just dust it on them and only use until the fleas are gone. Make sure that there isn't a bunch of straw or hay in the cage that the fleas can live and produce in. I hope that helps.

This is my 1st time raising rabbits. I have a nesting box the baby bunnies are in, when is the right time to turn the nesting box on it's side so the bunnies can "come & go" as they please? Also, most of the cage flooring, is 1/2 inch wire cloth, and sets off the ground about 3 feet. There is a concern, of rats chewing off bunny legs, when they slip thru the wire mesh. So, I will soon be adding a second partition of wire mesh. Chris, have you had an experience like this?

I have never had a problem but I don't have a huge rat problem either. As far as turning the nest box on its side, never had to do that either. The babies tend to start leaving the nest at about 10 days old. for the first few days I put them back in the nest box at night and then they can usually get in and out as they please from that point on. After they start spending more time out of it than in it, i just remove it. Hope that helps.

I have a SECOND time mom who abandoned her kits. First go-round she did great. 8 babies in the nest box, only 1 random death around 2 weeks but she cared for them. Now this second litter she had all the kits on the wire. 1 died. I placed them in the box (no fur pulled) and 2 days later she still hadn't pulled fur or apparently fed them. They were cold and 2 dead. I have no foster moms right now so I took them inside and I've been bottle feeding raw fresh goat milk and they've got a heating pad. I'll pull her fur and see if that helps keep them warm. We'll see. But what do you think about the regression of a SECOND time mom who did fine the first time? Silver fox.

Don't judge a farmer based on your city morals about pets. You have no room to talk unless you're a vegetarian: the animals you eat have likely not been raised this humanely. This guy obviously cares for his rabbits and no breeder want to loose a momma he's raised, but it's extremely hard to make a living doing this and you have to be practical. It's harder to have a long term farming career than it is to become a doctor. So grow up and take your jugement elsewhere.

First of all, I wouldn't worry about the snow, they should be able to handle that just fine. I would be concerned that she was dead too though. if that is the case I am afraid that there may not be much you can do. If she is still alive then she has to be coming out to eat and drink. If you have a game came you might set it up nearby to see if she is coming out at night. I am so sorry you are having this problem and I can't really help much.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
It is very unlikely that the mother will eat her babies. It does happen but is very rare. The nest box needs to go in a few days before the doe is going to give birth (30 days from being bred). You may not know when that is. You can take a handful of straw and throw it in the cage. When she starts gathering it up with it hanging out both sides of her mouth (it will be pretty obvious) put the nest box in. She is about to have them. I hope that helps.

I am sorry for the slow response. A distended belly might not be anything to worry about but it could be bloat. You can treat bloat with infant gas drops but it is very hard to treat in rabbits that young. I hope that it is doing fine by now but if it was bloat it probably didn't make it. As far as the mother only feeding one baby at a time, that is a little strange, but if they are all being fed I don't think it is a problem.

She did not pull fur and their bellies were not full and round like that. I woke up this morning and all 11 had perished. I tried to save one that was still moving a tiny bit by warming it up but it didn't make it. I'm assuming momma just didn't do her job. Scarlett wasn't even a year old. We got her Last summer. My question is if she has another litter will she more then likely do the same thing or do they mature and take care of them properly as they get older or as they have more litters? I HATE to see more babies pass.

I have an experienced doe who I bred about 5 weeks ago. Yesterday she finally nested, and had one massive kit. Poor girl, this baby was huge, had grown a little fur, and even had top teeth! Unfortunately, as it was alone, it got too cold, and I didn't find it early enough. No pooling in the nails until I had it warm. Sometimes kits just don't make it. Since that kit was so big, we're going to give this doe a little break before rebreeding.

Good luck and I hope it all goes well. I sure would love to visit New Zealand some day by the way.

Here’s a question that wasn’t answered in this informative video. First time mum, birthed 5, made a small nest and pulled a small amount of fur. We lost 1 & had to clean the entire cage out inc her fur - I assumed she’d pull more - she didn’t. She’s feeding her babies at least twice a day - except 1 that’s half the size, half the weight, weak & wobbly. We’ve been supplementing this one with rabbit replacement milk on a syringe and keeping her warm when she feels cold. Also putting her with our other doe for a feed. However, the mother didn’t lick clean her babies, they still had after birth and umbilical cords attached on day 3 & day 4 until I wiped them clean. I wiped them clean because I thought they were dying, they looked awful. They look better now. Is the mum not licking clean her babies really a concern or am I the only one that’s concerned about it?

Unfortunately I don't have anything on that. It is very hard to do. You can try to go to a farm supply store and get a kitten milk replacement or a goat milk replacement and a bottle with a very small nipple. I hope that it works out.

My uncles rabbit had kits yesterday and is refusing to have any contact with them, what do I do? Is it also okay to have her 5 week old kits in the same area?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
It is best to move the other babies off so the mother only has one set of mouths to feed. 5 weeks is a little early to ween the older babies but that is about all you can do. She will most likely take care of the new babies but you probably won't see it happen. Most mother rabbits don't really pay a lot of attention to their babies except to feed them once or twice a day.

She should probably have them around the 18th or 19th of this month. They generally give birth on day 30 or very close to it.

Please help my doe just gave up on her babies tonight. My doe just had a litter of eight kits they're all healthy and fine. I moved her out of her cage with the dad so she could be alone with her babies but a day after her being with her baby she wants nothing to do with them. What do I feed them and how much. I also have one kid that has a very swollen leg and ankle and he's just dragging it around I'm not sure what to do with them. His still eating fine.

I am sorry to hear about the injured kit. Unfortunately it sounds like it may have a broken leg. There probably isn't much you can do for it and you may want to consider culling it to put it out of it's misery. It is a tough decision to make. As for the mother not wanting anything to do with her babies, that is pretty normal. They really don't pay much attention to them at all until it is time to feed them (once or twice a day when no one is around). As long as they are not overly skinny they are fine and don't need anything else. If you do notice that they are overly skinny and feel you must feed them look for a kitten milk replacement or goat milk replacement from a farm supply store.

Hi! My doe had 10 babies all live! They are 3 days old today. I have 2x yesterday found a baby out of the nest box and across the other side of the cage, second time his poor little foot was stuck and he was crying. I think its tge same fat baby doing this, I think hes attached to does nipple and going out with her lol but its making my anxiety explode lol Is this normal? What can I do to stop this from happening?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
That isn't that abnormal. It happens from time to time with my rabbits too. usually it only happens once or twice but every once in a while you get an over aggressive feeder that likes to hold on tight. You can put a lip on the front of you nest box that faces to the inside. It doesn't need to be very big just a small ledge kind of that will act as a scraper to scrape them off when she jumps out of the nest. personally, I just check them a few times a day and put any that are out back in the nest box. By about 2 weeks old they are going to be able to get in and out on their own so it really isn't that much work for me to do.

My doe was fine with her first litter with me. But this time she turned very aggressive after a new litter and is still pretty nasty. Any tips ?

Ware gloves when you handle her. :) I really don't know that there is much you can do but wait. She will probably calm down as the litter grows. Sorry I don't have better advice.

My rabbit gave birth a few hours ago on the cage floor three died and two lived and she seems to have left them and is stepping on them I removed them from the cage and put them in a box to keep them warm I tried to bring her to them but she still isn’t acknowledging them and steps on them what do I do
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 3 жыл бұрын
I would bring them to her rather than taking her to them. Rabbits don't really pay much attention to their babies except to feed them just a few times a day and they usually do that when no one is around. If they are in a nest box and have plenty of bedding, I would put the nest box in with the doe and leave her alone to take care of them. It is rare that a mother rabbit will not care for her babies but there are some times (like first time moms) that they don't do a very good job. If she is a first time mother, she will most likely do better on her next litter.

Oh no, so sorry to hear about your problems. If they are not being fed you can try to force the mother to feed them. Basically, hold her on her back and place the babies on her to feed. It is difficult but can be done. I hope everything works out for you.

Hi. I have a question again. My bunny had a baby just one month ago. She escaped on us and was in contact with male 3 days after giving birth. She's now nesting again - started about 3 days ago. Yesterday she pulled a ting bit of fur. But no babies yet. Is it possible that she had the babies but ate them? Or is she just preparing it for the bunnies?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
It is possible but very unlikely. I would bet that she is preparing for another litter. I hope it goes well.

I dont see my rabbit Luna going ON to the nest and the babies are already 7 weeks and the mother always accidentally step ON some babies so 3 dies and 2 is left..
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry to hear that. You will very seldom ever see the mother feed or pay much attention to the babies. That is normal. Stepping on them and killing them isn't uncommon for first time moms. it isn't usually a problem with future litters though.
