Really most pedals are the same. The subtle differences are mostly in EQ and amount of gain available, which you can just adjust many other ways with your setup if you need to. Bottom line is, spending a fortune on pedals is purely for the idea and image of what you're actually getting. If you're really a great guitar player and creative, you could use any old pedal and make it sound perfectly amazing. Simple as that. This is exactly what almost every lauded guitarist throughout history has always done, just used whatever they had or was available to them at the time and made it sound iconic with their creativity.

This video really shows you how crucial getting a great basic tone from the amp is. Higher quality amps make a lot of things sound so much better, you can really get away with using less expensive OD's to push things. I wasted a lot of money on amazing pedals and paired them up with less than stellar amp platforms and they didn't perform well. The amp is the most important part of your tone!

I beg to differ. Most amps sound pretty good, but the speaker is the weak link. Stock speakers have tons of reinforcement on them. That is necessary to prevent teens from blowing speakers and the consequent warranty returns. Those speakers sound terrible. Don't blame the amp itself. I have bought stellar amps that sounded crappy out of the box and they did not sound better after breaking in the speaker.

He’s naturally gifted, no question about it. I’ve probably got 20,000 more hours of playing and practicing time in than he does, (I’m 25 years older than him, so, it stands to reason) yet he is 10 times the player I am. He just has a natural gift for rhythm and melody that can’t be taught or practiced. It’s IN him. Lucky guy. I love his playing.

@@zenlandzipline Having taught sax and flute myself for many decades, there are two vital ingredients for being really good: Talent and Hard Work. And I would say that hard work is slightly more important.
@zenlandzipline
@zenlandzipline 9 ай бұрын
@@alanhaynes418 agree, but I will add this: “hard work” is a subjective concept. What may be “hard” to somebody with average or below average musical ability, might actually be easy to someone who is naturally gifted. Putting in 8 hours a day of practice and learning isn’t really that hard to do, if the practice and learning come easy to someone. Ask a virtuoso guitar player if their first 10 years of practice and learning were “hard”, and they will most likely say “well, I put in many hours of practice, but it really didn’t seem that hard. It didn’t seem like hard work. It was just just what I did. I enjoyed playing and practicing my instrument”. There are of course people with average musical ability who worked extra hard, put in more hours, and became very proficient on their instrument. But there is a difference between being proficient, and being someone who just sounds melodic and musical every time they pick up their instrument, and making it look natural and easy as they play. Rabea would sound musical on just about any instrument you hand to him, right off the bat, and would become proficient at it in half the time as somebody with average musical ability.

@@zenlandziplineyeah I agree with you I played for 25 years yet I can't improvise nearly as good as Rabea, I have developed better speed over the years, but varying phrasing and timing like Rabea does is extremely hard if not impossible to learn, I end up doing similar scale runs over and over, I think you need to have something in your brain that just gets it like an instinct, he's like channeling something and just letting it flow while I feel I need to try so much harder to play anything original or even musical. Yet I keep playing as some sort of therapy I guess, I realized a long time ago my talent is very limited yet I cant seem to put the damn thing down for good

Show me who your guitar idols are and I’ll tell you exactly how good of a player you are. There are exceptions but with a guy like rabea I guarantee it’s because he’s learned from the best and in many different genres. Learn a few Django songs to perfection and your playing will drastically improve. Same with vai, van halen, rush, holdsworth, messhugah. And improv comes easier once you’ve done your homework and dissected the greats. Every time i find a player I truly love and I hear about their influences it always makes perfect sense.This is my hot take but I believe it wholeheartedly.

I must thank you for this: I had a Blues Driver back in the 90s, didn’t like it much, lost it after a gig (bag on roof of car forgotten before we drove off) and I was honestly happy about it! But this video has made me revisit my Blues Driver aversion and I am now the proud owner of a Keeley Super Phat Mod and I’m loving it. Thank you Pete and Lee!

The Waza has an attack character that NONE but the Tumnus even has and the Tumnus gets a bit muddier on the neck than the Waza...and that Horsemeat was freaking great. Warm Drive is a beast and the last Marshall Pedal is far more of a Preamp than an overdrive. I would say for price, board real estate, and total feel is the Tumnus for me but the Waza and the Warm drive aren't getting kicked out of bed if I wake up next to em

Great shootout! The Blues Driver defenitely won the show. That was my first time hearing the Blues Driver and it was awesome. The Tumnus was a very close second and also was awesome. I love the SD-1 as i use it in my modeler, and was thinking about adding it to my hoard. But now i will have to shoot it out against the Blues Driver, as it was the clear winner tor me. Great job guys. One if the best shootouts in a long time.❤

I think the Tumnus got a bit of an advantage with the gain turned up. The shootout might have gone quite differently if Lee and Bea decided to match gain by turning the Tumnus down instead of all the others up. But it put Bea in the "barky" mood lol. But that's just me talking, I love using overdrives and even distortions at low gain.

Anderton’s, I’m a Mancunian expat living in the States. While we haven’t any of your shops here (to my profound annoyance, as I love your relationship with TC pedals, which are my top favourite pedal manufacturer), you have THE BEST gear demo videos of any music shop ANYWHERE. If you told me when I were 16 that I’d be voluntarily SEARCHING FOR ADVERTS TO WATCH at 40, I’d have told ye to do one, cos a) I ain’t never gonna live to be 40, and 2) I loathe adverts with such a passion that I cut out all television at age 15 just to get them off mi back. This was in the NINETIES, before I had INTERNET. So at 15 I’d voluntarily cut miself off from most entertainment-save for music and my guitar.) Anyroad, you get the point, I think. Here I am: 40-a little less jaded,but just as mad-and this is what I now do for fun. Life is so very strange. Love to you lot, though: Cap’n, Rabea, Danish Pete, and (sometimes) Chappers… -Rip

For a long time now I have been maintaining that Boss with the Blues Driver Waza Craft made in Japan has created one of the best overdrives in the world. In standard mode, it is faithful to the stock bd-2 but slightly improved. In custom mode however, you have more body, more lowend, more mids & gain. Truly spectacular! I agree with the final result Boss Bd-2 Waza Craft made in Japan is the best ever! (and it's also my main/guardian overdrive on my pedalboard for many years..!)

Great shootout. Loved the JHS Morning Glory. Seems to be very versatile. 2 thoughts: would have loved to hear the SD-1 vs. the BD-2 at the end, and I think if the challenge had been boosting your lead tone instead of adding distortion to your crunch channel the verdicts would have been quite different...

It’s taken me years to come back around to the brilliance of Boss pedals. I’ll always remember the night my digital rig broke mid set. I had a back up cheapo tube amp and a Boss DS1. Thru a cranked tube amp the DS1 floored me. We did 80’s pop and metal, 90’s grunge, 70’s rock and disco. It sounded amazing! There’s a magic setting on that pedal I discovered that night. Will never forget it.

This is fun, it's great to see Rabea adjust his playing to the pedal, to me that's the magical part of going to a music shop and playing a new guitar through a new amp or pedal. One suggestion would be to maybe do a more of a bracket type elimination, and make the initial matchup similar sounding pedals. Otherwise, in a winner stays on like this, you end up eventually changing pedals just because your ears are ready for something new.

Thought the Blues Driver shone right through as it didn’t need to be messed around with to get a good sound in that it was fine at 12 o clock and could be crunchier when the gain was adjusted . i've sat it out! obviously the winner of the day is the drive pedal tout court; you just can't have enough of them, to stack or not. i make a guitar sound with three quite different amps, split circuits, and some pedals (partly) shared. but another guitar on another day just wants a whole different colour of drive. at the end of the day: if you can get people to stay tuned for over an hour of drive noodling, kudos to rabea, and cheers anderton's.

Great video! For me the Tumnus would have taken the prize (just slightly) over the BD-2w. As Rabea said earlier in the video it would cut through the band mix better. I also heard the BD getting a bit flubby on the low frequencies. I own the BD-2w and it's a one of those "never selling that one" pedals. Now I'm looking for a Tumnus 😁 Edit: I'd like to add that what Rabea said about the interaction between the pedal and the amp is important. I've had pedals that I felt never reached the potential I first saw in them no matter how I set them. But then I made a seemingly minor change to the amp setting and it was "Wow! Where did that come from?" sort of thing. This is what makes shopping for pedals so much fun and yet so frustrating.

So many thoughts. My main guitar right now is an S7 and it's magical at that price. Rabea is absolutely right about the neck... it's so smooth and comfortable! This is the second time Rabea has chosen the Blues Driver in an OD shootout, so I think it's time to call this settled. It was also in Classic mode, so you can get that sound with a regular BD-2, which is what I've used for several years. Lee was right about the stigma around Boss pedals. For a long time, I tried to find another OD that I liked enough to take the Blues Driver off my board. Now, it's just always going to be part of my sound. Seeing the first shootout, when Rabea heard the same things I did, helped me decide that the sound you love is the sound you love, regardless of brand or what tools you use to get it. Great video, guys!
