Italy were lucky to not concede many, many goals against a Spanish team that dominated them for almost the entirety of the match. Even when Italy came alive, Spain nearly scored a couple more goals.
England looked poor against Denmark as Southgate is yet to find a system that works for his players, with everyone looking like they haven’t met or they are playing out of position (some of them are, such as Foden). And where’s Cole Palmer?
That, plus all of the Euro 2024 highlights and analysis from throughout the day!

I was on the receiving end of that, and I was also impressed by the skills of the players, we know they're good but usually the skill is very similar, yesterday (and not just yesterday) we were inferior not just in gameplay but also in single player control and passing. Not on the same league 😢

Not to take away too much from Spain but spaletti has already noted the rest detrimental to Italy's downfall throughout the whole game. . Italy are better than that but you could clearly see the fatigue and tiredness from the 1.5 days rest manager put on the team , yes Spain are great but that wasn't Italy that's why they had a spell of attack and energy when subs that weren't in the original 11 were put on.. Italy will come back sharper.. 😉 Also Spain didn't score...

The kind of football that Spain does play has been invented by Dutch Ajax coach Michels in the '60s.. Cruijff refined this kind of total football at Barcelona, and Pep Guardiola has given it an even more modern look. It is great to see the spirit of Rinus Michels live on in modern day football. ... Although being it sad that the Dutch abandoned the kind of football that made them popular... It is great to see Spain playing this way. ❤

Italy was pathetic today, one of our worst performances ever. Zero shots on target, embarassing midfield and Di Lorenzo got dribbled like 15 times. Luckily we have donnarumma to save our ass from embarassement. I also don't understand Spaletti, he clearly selected players for a 3-5-2 formation, yet we keep playing a formation that wasn't tested until one week before the euros with players out of position. How quickly time changes, from Italy's strongest weapon in the Euros just three years ago being the midfield, as it was absolutely stacked, now its a shadow of its former self, with only 2 players left from that midfield still around (hopefully by the WC Locatelli and Tonali re-bounce so we can see them in that lineup to fix the midfield)

2021 Jorginho was a starter in a Chelsea team that won the CL, 2024 Jorginho is a benchwarmer in an Arsenal team that wins nothing, yet the coach loves him. He is one big part of the problem, once Cristante came on at least Italy were winning duels in midfield. Jorginho shouldn't even be in the squad. Barella has always struggled against Spanish opposition, whether it's Spain, Real, Atletico or Barcelona. And Verratti's contribution has not been replaced.
@marcelom9215

Only genuinely good midfielder in this squad is Barella. Jorginho isn’t the same player as he was 4 years ago and Verratti’s ability to deal with pressure is missing. @Alboravin
@Alboravin 6 күн бұрын
Yeah Donnarumma had to pull out a couple of world class saves today. Add the crossbar coming to the rescue on Nico Williams' long-range curler and Cucurella fizzing the cutback to Pedri with too much power and this game on another day could have been a repeat of the 2012 final. Sure, it's fine margins but I'm not overly worried (yet) about finishing with this Spain team considering they also scored 3 in their first game (albeit against an ageing Croatia on the decline). It's an anomaly more than anything else that the decider was an OG after such a dominant display but hey, today that goal meant that the 3 points went to the right team given the disparity in their performances.

A question I ask myself for quite a few years: Why do so many national teams have utter garbage coaches? Southgate, Koeman, Roberto Martinez, Santos for many years and so on. No Top 20 club in europe would give any of these guys a Chance. Their tactics have been diabolical to nonexistent for YEARS and still they’ve got the job. Is it a wage issue? Do quality coaches earn twice as much at a club as they would earn at national teams?

I'm starting to believe Spain took it easy on Italy, Nico Williams could have easily walked the ball in the way he was making light work of the Italian defense. If that's the best 11 Italy can assemble, then they might as well book their flights back home now & expect them to make it a hat trick of missing out on the World Cup. Italy should consider picking Italians from immigrant backgrounds who were born and raised in Italy over these Argentines & Brazilians who were never good enough to play for Argentina & Brazil, but they play for Italy because their great great great great great great great grandfather was born in Naples. Italy has younger, faster, skilled players, I see them in their youth teams, but they get overlooked at senior level for an Argentina or Brazil reject.
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia 6 күн бұрын
Correct, Spain is utilising its talent from immigrant backgrounds much better than Italy. I remain convinced however this was NOT the best XI nor the best formation. Cambiaso and even Fagioli deserve to start. Barella and Frattesi are too similar, Jorginho is a corpse who only gets selected "because Premier League premium". Spalletti favours Inter players but then he plays 4-3-3 when those Inter players only know 3-5-2. He picked the wrong squad for his preferred formation. Conte with an inferior squad beat Spain 2-0.

Yes we got outclassed today. But not all hope is lost, Italy can use this as a lesson to improve and fix h things. I personally think spalletti should consider a 3-4-1-2 formation or something like that, go with more solid defence of 3, (could be Calafiori, Buongiorno and Bastoni), use wingbacks (di Marco, Cambiaso or Bellanova) and win the midfield battle, Jorginho with Barella and Frattesi slightly more advanced. Chiesa more as a second striker, and I would start Retegui the next game and bring on Scamacca as a super sub, with Raspadori able to sub on for Chiesa Italy does have decent young midfielders, such as Colpani, Fabbian, Casedei and Tonali needs to make a comeback. It is important all those players get regular playing time and improve in consistency in order to break into the Azzurri squad in the future.

As a german I noticed some parallels between this present english and the past german squad(s). Stacked team with lots of talented players, but wrong tactics. You have to get rid of Gareth Southgate. Better sooner than later. He's not the right coach. I suppose you know that. In Germany it went the same way. Jogi Löw surely did some some things right, but more at the beginning of his career (2008-2014). Here in Germany we say, we won the World Cup in 2014 despite..., not because of him. Afterwards he kind of wasted a "golden generation" with lots of ridicilous decisions throughout the following tournaments. So.. you english people, I feel you.

I geniually cant belive I am this sad about a draw I defo would have took a point before the match but obviosly in the manner of how they drew in the last minute probably means we are out it just sucks man. Same as tbe last time we played them in the Euros took a lead but then they drew just that back then we were 3-0 up and still choked and also what will be simmilar to the 2000 euro is that we had 2 draws and a loss vs a big team in this case england. But also FUCK them for not winnin vs Denmark so that they maybe rotate against us and we get a jammy win. Still loved what the team did every one doubted us and we made it though. At least we got a great volleyball team for the olympics which we can maybe win. Wow why am l still typin this tnx for readin my rant I guess

Spalletti should have used a 5-3-2 formation against Spain with christante starting instead of jorginho in midfield as jorginho is useless in moving the ball up front and he was just frustrating to watch. Also put barella up front with chiesa and put fagioli starting in the midfield and take pellegrini out.

England vs serbia already exposed that Englands midfield couldn't control a game... so what does Southgate do?... starts with the same 11... I thought he would have learnt the lesson. and bringing on Connor Gallagher didn't help at all... I think he was even worse... cos vs Denmark the problem was rice, he was bad. he's a great player, but yesterday he was poor out of possession and in possession. at times foden was in the right trying to find his sweet spot... with saka also in the right , just weird. Bellingham wasn't having his night. Bellingham and rice are world class, but if they having an off day... bring someone else on and find a different approach.

On your point about the Italian midfield, Fagioli did not play today. You have no idea whether he would have been a difference maker and if he was, i.e. scored or assisted a goal, you probably would not have made your point about Italy's midfield options. Italy lost today, so now there's a negative light placed on their squad. Human nature, I guess.

If you actually watched the game and not only the line-up, you would know that Foden wasn't playing left wing all game. The formation shows him there, yes, but he was roaming around, and yes, he was mostly central or in the half-spaces. Stop this narrative that he was played in the wrong position, because he hasn't been in England's last two games.

Italy tried to play like Spain too much, and Spain knew how to defend and counter that. I think the best way for Italy to play was to be like a true italian team etc. With a gladiator mentality like Conte, Mourinho, Ancelotti type football. Be more dangerous, play longer pass, send crosses in more often, and play more direct throughballs against Spain. Chiesa had tons of pace and would've smoked Cucurella if he had more chances. It would've completely disrupted the tiki taka football. Especially at the end when you could see italy actually look a bit more dangerous. Italy needed to take more shots and make more use of any opportunity. Long shots, free kicks, corners etc. There was no aggression, they were passive and played liked a bunch of boys not men.

The 1-0 score doesn't mean Spain cruised past Italy. It was an Own Goal. It also shows Spain were not as good in finishing the opportunities they created, and to be fair, Italy were relatively good in defense. Italy just didn't click in offense today, seeming a bit initimidated by Spain.
