Just as he came in, Dembélé will be leaving Barcelona in a cloud of confusion. Where previously it was over the price, this time… well it’s over the price again. A “private clause” or “transfer obligation clause” in Dembele’s contract meant that he could be sold to anyone who bid €50 million for the French attacker. PSG are the buy, as they were with the man Dembele replaced: Neymar. So how did this happen? Making sense of the Dembele transfer is difficult, but possible!

They should have payed 200 million in depth and used the rest towards the next summer. They already had a great team and could have taken advantage of young talents. Teams always feel this need to overspend because others do the same.

Not really. Dembele treated BVB really badly by disappearing. Nobody knew where he was when he had already flown to Barcelona without permission. Then he tried to bully BVB into letting him go by refusing to return and play for them again. The stance from Dortmund was then communicated really clearly. There were only 2 options: - Barca pay us all the moneys - We make an example and ban him from the first team for the remainder of his contract So there was no way Barca would've had him any cheaper after that. Imo that is when Barca should've backed out of the deal. Dembele had already shown his personality at that point, spending all the money on a known rotten apple is what got them in this whole saga.

Honestly what I miss in the video is the horrendous way he left BVB. When he treated the club like that, BVB took the stance of '140 million or he'll go to our reserve team to kill his career'. That took away all of Barca's negotiating room, as it became a matter of principle for BVB. After that whole debacle, imo Barca should've backed out. I mean he already showed his terrible personality before joining them, everything after is then completely on them. They knew and got him anyways.

As a Barça fan, the worst part isn't that we're only getting 25M, or that for the past 6 years he's done little to nothing, is that when he was starting to play good, to get on well with the squad and he got a coach that would die for him in Xavi he decides to cash out to PSG. It's honestly baffling. I hope Raphinha improves upon his good first season or that Abde, Fati or Ferrán Torres step up big time

Bartolomeu sank this club, 20+players bought, salaries like no other, 1 billion in debt, a sporting project very lame by Barcelona's standards and then covid struck. This was recipe for disaster and this only because Rosell was unfairly charged by Madrid courts as in 5 out of 6 charges(and 1.5 years in prison) he has been found not guilty by now. Barcelona have had just won Champions League with Bartolomeu having just taking over from Rosell(who built a great team) who resigned and then election were to happen and nobody in the club could vote against a president who just won Champions League albeit he had been president for only 6 months. Then he sank the club, im so sorry for that, absolutely abyssal performance as a club president from Bartolomeu.

He wasn't really "playing the board like a fiddle". The board didn't even want him to renew in the first place - Alemany was public about this before his contract expired and said he had little desire to continue mingling with Dembele's representatives. The only reason he did stick around (besides the fact that no one was offering him what he asked), is because Xavi had become so enamored with him that he begged the board/Alemany to sit down and negotiate. In the end, they basically gave whatever demand he asked for because they knew Xavi wasn't going to stop pressuring them to. Even after renewing, the board were in favour of straight up benching him so they could not only basically tell him to fck off but also so they could try to get a sale out of him by next January, but Xavi ignored it and made him a permanent starter. The only reason the Dembele saga continued for another year is solely because of Xavi. It ultimately works as a net positive for the club - He leaves for free in 2022 or you get one last (half) season out of him plus 50m in the books. It is best for everyone involved that they move on, as this move should've never happened in the first place.

I suppose Dembele was paid less than 25M in salary in this second contract, so Barcelona got a year of Dembele playing for free AND earned some money on him. Good job by Xavi. It does not repair the damage done by the first contract, but you cannot undo history.

I feel for Xavi. He was the only one last year who truly wanted to keep him (Dembele was getting whistled by the home fans in winter 2021-spring 2022). He always trusted him and gave him his full support and said many times publically how he thinks he is one of the best in the world. He’s still relatively new as a manager so this is a learning experience but I still feel for him a bit

As a Barca fan I'm a bit gutted, as Xavi fought for him from the moment he came in and even had Dembele in the best form of his entire Barca career tbh.. most assists in La Liga in 21/22 and he was crucial for us last season despite injuries. It shows also the influence agents have on their players' decision making. I always thought Dembele was one of the most electric and talented wingers I've ever seen... I think if he improved his decision making he'd have had world class stats. Hopefully the 16yo Yamal can take the reigns because I have little faith in Raphinha

Raphinha is a decent player but he's so one footed that if he could he'll probably walk on one foot. But he's very hard worker, great presser and sacrifices defensively for the team. Lamine will be a better player than Dembele if everything goes according to PLAN, which is rarely the case. His technical abilities and game understanding is beyond his age. For all the crazy talent Dembele has, until recently his brain was slower than his body.

What Barca doesn’t get: if you convince a player to backstab his club, turn into a traitor and join them, then they are still buying a traitor that is capable of backstabbing them for the next club. Fully agreed with the first part but your second part is totally biased. Way Barca forced BVB to sell Dembele was shameful to say the least but Barca is NOT the only club who has done this Sterling (Liverpool to city), Kane (failed moved from Spurs), Carlos Teves and finally Neydamar (Barca to PiSsG) they all have forced their transferred in the similar, shameful, manner. Btw Felix's transfer has nothing to do with Barca it all Mendes and his stupidity thinking Barca would spent big amount.

As a Barca fan, all the power to Demebele. It’s not his fault that he had to have a pay cut because the club was run so poorly. So inserting a clause in his contract that would ensure 25 million in the bank is smart. I don’t think selling him was that bad, as although he was great, he was far too injury prone and inconsistent.

Of course there was still good players namely one Leo Messi, but Barcelona were way too trigger happy to get the new Neymar to fill the whole he had left. I think if anything they should’ve really just spent it on young players or never spend that Neymar money. And I really think Barcelona should’ve been way more specific on who to get or buy. They probably could’ve got way more value by tryna buy players from Italy or on expiring contracts.

14:19 Idk if I would say 230k p/w for Dembele was a great deal. When you consider that Saka is on 195k p/w, Martinelli is on 180k p/w, Lewis Diaz is on 55k p/w and Bernardo Silva is on 150k p/w. That new contract Barca were going to offer Dembele would have been severely over paying for someone who always delivers a mixed bag of performances on the foundation of guaranteed injury lay-offs. 15:14 To be clear, Dembele and Sissoko (his agent) didn't play Barca, they played Xavi. It is well known fact that after the shenanigans of December 2021 (refusing to renew on reduced wages to allow Barca to register Ferran) and January 2022 (refusing to leave Barca and opting to run down his contract to leave as a free agent) Mateu Alemany and Joan Laporta wanted Dembele out of the club, it's the entire reason Barca signed Raphinha. He was signed to replace Dembele. However, when Dembele's expected move to PSG didn't materialise last summer due to a Mbappe U-Turn, he turned back to barca asking to reopen contract negotiation talks and Xavi made it clear to Laporta and Alemany that they should re-sign Dembele. Xavi put a lot of trust in Dembele, even though Laporta and Alemany disagreed with that approach. So really, Xavi is the one that has been played. Otherwise, a well put together video as usual Adrian. As a barca fan, I have shared my 100% completely unemotional take 😂on this Dembele transfer over on my channel. Dembele came, he tried, he failed and now someone is still crazy enough to offer him twice what he was on at Barca. Let the man get paid, we might miss him maybe, but he's no Messi or Neymar so I'm confident that he will be replaced eventually. Low-key, I'm glad we no longer have to deal with a guy whose agent starts agonising for a move everytime he has a rough patch of form or who starts demanding an astronomical pay rise everytime he has his 2 or 3 world class showings. I now hope that Xavi can invest the same kind of trust he put into Dembele, into players like Raphinha, Abde, Fati and kids like Lamine Yamal who really want to be at the club.

Seeing everything from the refusal to train with BVB until now, Barca really only have themselves to blame. I could understand why the club persisted with him cuz giving up on a 100 mil player so quickly wasn’t on the table and the club were never gonna get any decent offers with his injury record. Where I’m more annoyed is that Xavi went against the club and fans to fully support Dembele only for him to leave the first chance he got. During that whole drama last year, that should’ve been the time to cut the losses and fully close off the disastrous Bartomeu era.

The way Barcelona handled this was awful. It made them seem like a club run by amateurs. Barcelona and Xavi personally took a gamble with a player they already knew had problematic behaviour and they lost. They believed in him, he didn't believe in them. The contract negotiations were also handled incredibly stupid. Please STOP the nonsense. In Dortmund, Dembele scored 11 goals and had 21 assists in one season at 19. That's not "potential". That's world class PERFORMANCE. Dembele's transfer was wrong since the very beginning. They signed a RW to replace Neymar, a LW. I remember what happened when Dembele joined, Suarez was moved to the left, Messi played up front with Dembele on the right. This made no sense. And then he got injured and Barcelona had to get some other LW. I am very relieved that he is gone. I never saw anything special in him. He is good for highlights but can't win you games.

We were going to lose him for nothing and Dembele couldn’t find a club so he needed to buy time without compromising his future propositions…(so well done!) Xavi got some performances that led to major titles and Barca was glad to have him onboard for less salary when we needed the most. At the end Barca wanted to loyalty from Dembele and there is none. management get rid of players all the time and companies loses top performers and this is no different… as a fan Dembele showed no love and will receive none! Chapter closed!!!

PSG and Barcelona have a special relationship don't they. So, I've always been a football fan. But this is the first transfer window that i pay attention to all the drama and bad blood that can result. Its not something a casual fan (which i used to be) pays attention to. But these players are people. These sporting directors and managers and owners are people. People get angry. People lie. People cheat. And, even with the public statements individual clubs pull out to the masses its something to keep in mind. Its cynical to think like that and i don't normally think like that (Chelsea last year really beat my childish naivety) but...yeah 🤷‍♂️ As for Barca. I think they'll continue as they have this past season and a half. With a focus on getting rid of that poor performance against top league opposition in the Champions League you mentioned a short while ago. It won't be easy, but nothing worth it ever is
