I think 2 or 3 of your birds flew past your loft with the big batch then flew back home. Train your birds more of the last 12 miles so they know it like back of their hand. Ps Also as your birds get older they will want to mate so this means different conditions. you need a bigger loft so you can separate them. they will fly better and keep in more consistent condition . For a start try putting your cock birds in a basket say Monday and Tuesday so they get used to drinking and feeding in the basket. let them out Wednesday out of the basket for a little fly and check how quickly they come in to see their mate / loft. try again Thurs morning then let out Friday mid afternoon. Sat race day their brain should be more switch on. Always remember alot of this sport is like anything else. Health, food and quantity and when to feed / different types of food. Motivation. loft size / correct ventilation/ no cold drafts. it really is no different to human sport. You can be the run of the mill type of bloke and still perform well if you look after your self. Yes you do need something bit extra and yes some is down to breeding. I believe 70% of success is down to management. if things are not working out their is a reason. Font forget you and few more fanciers will always have the odd bad fly around home/ training chuck/ race. due poss birds of pray around home or on way home. Liberation point bad weather.or .storm on way home. when your birds are healthy tgey will show you just focus on them. If your birds after many training chucks still.fly high and circle the liberation site , They are not in the correct health and feed methods are wrong. They need few minutes at liberation site before release and check no other pigeons are around. Your birds need to come out if your basket and fly fairly low and make good speed./ progress home if they don't the race is lost. Good luck enjoy learning and your hobby/ sport

** Not a good time to liberate the race birds with that kind of weather. As you can see, the losses will be many. Here, in the USA we would have held them over til the next day to see if the weather breaks and then if conditions were better, they would be liberated.

Perhaps your birds got dragged. It could be the reason why they took so long. At least you got 2/3 of your team back. Don't get discouraged. 🙏
