You need to do more of these... for two reasons: 1. They're funny af. 2. SIM racers often have the opinion that because they're either a. faster or b. a few inches along side the car in front, that somehow that car needs to move or make allowances for them... I'm not sure if the in-built spotter in iRacing contributes to this or not because it will say as soon as a car is a touch alongside, but in any event people think that just because they manage to get alongside in the braking and turn in zone, that somehow the corner is now theirs, which it obviously isn't. People equally moan about dive bombs, but I also think these are ok (if you don't crash)... but in any event, more of these types of incidents with your expert, real world view would be cool to watch and maybe even help educate some SIM racers!
@jenscee7679
@jenscee7679 4 жыл бұрын
Lee Rigby agree with almost everything there except dive bombs are the bane of iracing. If I’m miles clear of a car and braking at the normal braking marker, I have the right to turn in. Dive bombs just cause accidents and it is always the overtaking car’s fault. We could all just dive in every corner but none of us would get past 2 laps.

If you are alongside (eye level) anywhere before or on the apex you have earned the right to room and it doesn't matter if it's a lunge. That doesn't mean it's your corner and you can then drift out wide in the exit but it does mean the other car shouldn't turn in and hit you. I think that's the problem. Most people either think it's their corner or the other person's when in a lot of instances it's neither person's corner. It's these that lead to the "racing incident" accidents which are no one's fault really as it's difficult going side by side around a corner. Some championships unofficially make the rule alongside before braking but that's really to just stop people lunging.

I don't know how many times in F1 2019 I miss a call from the engineer because I was too focused on my braking point. It even happens when I'm listening for a call. It's easy to not hear what you're being told when you've got a racing engine screaming in your ear
@operator0
@operator0 4 жыл бұрын
It makes no difference if the spotter tells you a car is along side in I racing because if the car is only along side by a couple of inches, he has no right to that corner and should back off. if a driver in real racing tries to claim they had a corner after wrecking someone out because their front tow hook was an inch in front of another guys rear bumper, he's likely to get a punch in the face in the paddock. I've seen a guy banned from BMWCCA racing for doing that shit more than once, and he was a big time money sponsor. A real life racing series wont survive for long if they allow that because all the clean racers will start racing in another sanctioned event and leave just the two or three dipshits to wreck each other out every race.

I think a lot of mistakes in overtaking happens, because of wanting to overtake too soon. But I also think that is maybe the part of racecraft which is one of the more difficult things to learn. Recognizing opportunities and building up to a proper and solid overtake. But even if you are very skilled, you can screw it up sometimes. Look no further than F1 drivers for example.

I blame Senna. He glamorized the if you don't go for a gap you aren't a racing driver mentality and in simracing where there is no physical risk a lot of people just drive like they are racing against AI and should be rewarded for aggressive driving with cars moving out of the way. It especially sucks for older people who have less time.

@@John-ok8ts Don't blame Senna. He knew how to spot an actual gap. A lot of people use his quote as an excuse for making moves when there isn't enough of a gap to fit a moped, but Senna knew how to properly overtake. In the case of the incident that prompted that quote, he wasn't even trying to overtake Prost. It was something that wasn't unheard of back then. Prost did it to Senna just the year before, but Senna knew how to overtake cleanly.

I’ll start by saying that I agree with what you’ve said. Race craft really is an art. With the clip of the Repsol mx5, both cars were sidebyside, Repsol got in front and on the outside, turned in and made contact and was at fault. Repsol had to make the assumption that the other car was STILL there. With the AMG’s at CotA, they were only just sidebyside, the car in front and on the outside turned in and made contact but was not at fault. (Despite the fact that the KrakenAMG was never going to stay on track, even if he ghosted) There’s two pretty similar situations that are very hard to govern with a solid set of rules. I would hate to be a steward and can see how there would be a lot of “racing incidents” where both sides weren’t really at fault but also could’ve done more to avoid the issue.

Hi, thanks for this really good video. I'd like to add something here, as an iRacing regular driver who trained some beginners to race Endurances. If you don't want to be involved in crashes, it's not enough to make sure you don't cause a crash. In the end it doesn't matter if it was your fault or not. In real life racing, or in top pro simracing, you expect good racing around you and the intense pressure justifies to go for it a 100%. But if you are just a regular driver, trying to score some decent points or earn iRating, you have to finish your races and that means actively avoid risky situations. In iRacing you have a big virtual mirror. I always suggest to beginners in case they see any move from the car behind in the braking zone to leave a space on the inside. Most of the time you'll keep the position anyway. Sometimes, you'll lose it. But you'll avoid 90% of those crashes presented in this video. And of course, when you are the car behind, as you said, don't make something that require that your opponent should actually be good, to avoid the crash. If the car in front was that good, probably you wouldn't be able to overtake him (at least at a low iR level). This is my personal opinion and advice. Thank you !

Hi, I'm an experienced sim racer (800+ starts) and also done some stewarding for a private league. It may be a bit different equiette/rule wise in real life racing but I disagree on the one @6:44 (Mazdas at Okayama T1). The outside driver should really know that the inside car has a decent chance of having some overlap at the apex, (had an overlap the entire straight) and for self-preservation reasons if nothing else, the outside driver should leave a car width on the inside in case this happens and 9/10 times he would get a better run on the exit anyway and stay ahead. In my opinion he is lucky to not be taken out and the inside car is allowed to make an attempt to overtake (but not claim the corner as their own - I hate when people say that).

You're spot on with your take on all the road racing incidents in this video. As someone who understands the differences in road racing and oval racing mentalities, let me note a few of the differences between the two when it comes to overtaking and fault in an accident. In road racing you need to be 1/2 way to 3/4ths alongside to consider the racing line yours for the corner. On an oval, if you've got a fender inside, it's your corner. You aren't required to back down, and if the opponent turns into you trying to throw a block and wrecks themselves out doing so that's their problem not yours. The drivers have spotters. There's no excuse to not know a competitor is to your inside. That being said, you do NOT have the right to dive bomb a competitor from 6 car lengths back at the last second into turn 3 at Martinsville Speedway and then blame the other guy because you didn't make it out of turn 4 in one piece. Oval racing is a contact sport. Casual contact is GOING to happen. Suck it up, move on and don't make it a demolition derby because you got a bump and got shoved up a groove. That's called the 'bump n' run" and that name exists for a reason. It's a legit tactic on short tracks and is NOT a reason to retaliate by turning your car into a wrecking ball...The only response for a bump n' run is to pay back in kind with another bump n' run if you catch that competitor again. NOT to escalate the issue and wreck them or both of you out of the race because you can't temper your emotion in a simulator.

@driver61 one thing is completely left out. by getting close, the drivers get informed that there is a car coming in like "car on the left" or "car on the inside", but that doesnt mean that you have to expect to be noticed and take care of not making contact while having a foot in the door. it's a risk/reward thing and to play it save the 3/4 side by side is a good call because going all in every time will raise the incident counter way quicker than taking your time and playing smart instead of holding on to the crowbar.

The first incident is a typical example of why you can't race quite as close online as you can in real life. For one, there's the inherent limitations of the experience in terms of what you can see/be aware of, as you touched upon. But, secondly, and this is very important, competitors don't share the same reality. Due to the client/server nature of the setup and the individual delays in moving information between participants, each racer experiences his own version of reality, which is ever so slightly different to what the next guy experiences or, even, what you might see in a server replay. Thus, a very slight "lean", which, in real life, would result in nothing but a scuff mark and, maybe, a tweaked rear view mirror, turns into "an incident" online. I know it's a killjoy, but one really has to be disciplined online and simply leave a margin. Many are incapable of this and that was a major reason for me to give up on it(*). (*): the other was, with age, I was no longer able to perform at the level I felt I should be capable of.

Please guys, let's talk about overtaking, a strong overtake is 99 percent done **BEFORE** the apex of the corner I have 2 questions, if it were last lap, final corner, is it worth taking both yourselves out of the race ? ***if it were lap 18 of 44 is it worth taking both yourselves out of the race ? Obvious answer or at least it should be. A strong overtake is not a tap on the ass and taking both cars out... Pace, when you have the pace you have pace to overtake or pace to lead the race, stay in the lead and pull away. When you have the pace to overtake, slipstream, pull alongside before the apex of the corner then move on to take the lead of the race or whatever the case may be. @1.59 @5.47 @7.08 owns the corner, not because of being on the inside or not but because he has the lead clearly by the length of his car if the rule of thumb is three quarters alongside then please add **before the apex three quarters MINIMUM** if you're not 75 percent alongside before apex then it's not a clean overtake, back out or at least no contact then live to fight another couple laps until its a clean move. We know it's a clean move when you're up by at least a second in a couple laps, this is pace. Sometimes two drivers are better at parts of a circuit than the other so you have constant overtaking until one loses concentration and makes a small error. 04jul2022.dellthecomputer

my issue with the green MX-5 was that he didn't seem sure about what he was going to do. He seemed to hesitate going into the braking zone, and didn't commit to the pass, but didn't back out and tuck back in line.

That Corvette one if you look at the second to last angle shown, it looks like net lag that spun the corvette. If there wasn’t it would’ve been Scott free.

3/4 of the way up the side of the car for the corner to be yours only applies in road racing. In Nascar, it’s your corner if you have a nose inside anywhere of the car in front of you. If that car turns down it’s his problem.

6:45 bit unfortunate, this one. I feel like he was far enough to be given space, but he was in the RB Mazda's blind spot up until the apex.

He came in too late unfortunately. You need to get the job done before hand by getting along side before the apex.

The Repsol car @2.01... I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Every series is going to have different rules, but in V8 supercars here in AUS, you need to be up to the A-pillar to be in the clear of something like that. Car behind should have backed out. He wasn't even close

In that last clip, those trioval front straights are in all fairness pretty difficult to get the hang of. That looked to me to be a classic example of too much throttle coming off the banking. Also his line being a little bit outside the groove driving where there's bound to be less built up rubber and more natural debris probably didn't help his case either. We would all be annoyed

It's simple, if your front bumper is behind the other car's B pillar you have to back off. If you are past the B pillar you have the right of way.

you should really try ACC in case you haven't done so yet. here's a quick beginners guide for your first races. don't bother with setting a qualifying time, the pole setters are way faster anyway. when the track goes green, wait 20 seconds and let the grid start the race ahead of you, pass 10-15 wrecked cars in the first turn (must be a game feature, idk, happens every time) and commence your lovely drive. congrats, easy P5.

I'd chalk the ford and Corvette incident as netcode. There was still space visibly but apparently game thought otherwise.

I'd hate to say this, but isnt the FIA ruling that your front tire must be to the rear tire of the car in front to be considered "alongside" and not that 3/4 rule you stated?

Regarding the corvett vs ford incident. The ford driver was not at fault, it was the corvetts back end stepping out that caused the collision

Hi Scott, your videos are fantastic, thank you! Please make one for multiclass racing. How to behave being fast or slow car, being of another class, blue flags, etc. that would be perfect because the sim racing community is very poor and lacking in this kind of racing and everyone ends up being selfish and not understanding how it should be.

After review I really think the orange truck made a bit of a last second weckless approach in the chicane by late breaking and knew he would not have the space needed for him and the #5 truck. In my opinion that wasn’t a fair play and I certainly would take my revenge on him later on or in another race

1. That was the fault of the white car, all in all it seemed like a racing incident. He just tried a bit too much to close the black car out. 2. At first I was gonna disagree and say this was the fault of the teal/orange car. But Repsol took a really shallow entry, which you can't do while the spotter is telling you there's a car beside you. 3. Definitely the Ford, although it might've just been netcode lol 4. The slide was definitely the fault of the white truck. Entering the bus stop though, I can't fault either driver, racing incident. Orange truck lunges in, but the black truck turns in early knowing he was there. Probably was just frustrated for losing positions. 5. White car should've taken some curb, or if nothing else realized he didn't quite have position and breathed the throttle to fall in behind the other car. 6. Green car should have backed off. As a racer, you want to take any gap you see, and it wasn't a horrible move, but without establishing position it's not your corner. 7. Lol. Just lol.

Alot of those incidents are probably because of the virtual mirror. If you are on single monitor the virtual mirror can be deceptive in making you think you're clear when you're not.

Nice video. People might even learn someting they should totally research on their own. Hundreds of written resources where you can check how to overtake they are perfectly clear about it too. If you are being honest with yourself you suld be able to judge...yeah i wasn't quite there yet i shouldn't have tried to pass him/her. Still, great video.
