The Race Swapping of comic book characters from being depicted as White into a POC (person of color) in live action TV or movie projects is a very touchy and sensitive subject that gets emotions high and makes it hard to discuss this subject without it devolving into an argument almost instantly.
In this video I tackle this subject with the nuance I am known for and explain my position in detail. Please watch the full video in full, and then post your opinion and please be respectful to others and let us talk like adults. is that too much to ask for?

I'm black but I don't agree with race swapping. I've been a fan of Batman and I don't need him to be black to enjoy his stories. Its lazy to just lash on to characters who were already developed over decades. Its lazy to abandon creating a new character out of fear of how they will be received when the established characters they're race swapping also went through hard times like how Batman was unpopular at one time in his long history. And who said non white people wanted race swapping? I bet over 90% will tell you the don't need Spider-Man, Superman or Batman to look like them

Thanks for speaking up. I too Am African American and my position was simply that this subject has been overblown. between the MCU and its loose connections like the defenders on netflix and everything it ever touched. I could name 150 superheroes that they published for live action and maybe 5 of them were race swapped. So basically 99.97 of the characters they presented where as originally intended. the swaps were mostly obscure characters that no one had ever heard of in the first place. In saying that, Marvel created new original Black characters like Miles Morales, Riri Williams, and Moon Girl etc. in the 2010s. These characters are being developed into live action and animation and other things so marvel no longer has to do any swaps for diversity because they have more of them now.

@jayxtacee5695 Yes, exactly, but it isn't a swap, it is a replacement. A swap would be an exchange, it would be one character being traded for another. It would be taking a nonwhite characters and making them white while taking a white character and making them nonwhite, that would be a swap. Since nothing is being swapped, it is just a replacement. Uh I kinda agree with you the raceswaps are a bit overblown, I still believe raceswaps are lazy boring & much less impactful than original characters. You bring up demographics but a more diverse demographic should me more original diverse characters should be used not changing a pre established character. Some people want diversity & will just except anything as long as it ain’t offensive. That in my opinion will result in mediocrity.Why couldn’t domino be misty knight, would not changing heimdall be devastating for the black community. Disney really doesn’t need to “create” black characters because the marvel universe has hundreds just use them. If we just except race swap characters then there is less incentive to use original black characters because they require harder work. People defend Disney & claim it’s for diversity but most recent diverse characters people name to me are either raceswaps or mantles which is a little better but still. Billons of dollars & 3 original black characters used yaaay 🎉 this is kinda why I just read indie to get interesting black characters instead of waiting for marvel or dc to hand out scraps.

On the DvD for the Doctor Who story "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" there is an extra video on racism in the BBC. It was included on this one as it points out how the main villain for most of the story is supposed to be Chinese, but is played by a British actor doing the usual stereotypes. Meanwhile they have actual Chinese actors in non-speaking rolls as servants in the episodes. Having white actors play minority characters was certainly not limited to this, as I'm sure people can come up with many examples. So I have no problem with POC playing lesser known characters who were usually depicted as white, but their ethnicity is not a major part of the character.

I don't think thw issue is necessarily that they're replacing some characters with black people, but why they're doing it. It's just to pander to minorities and it's so transparent. Also people that are huge fans of the comics want to see the characters they read about in the comics. For example I was irritated when they made Louis Lane a red head. She's a brunette and I want to see the character I've been seeing in the comic books for years. I didn't like seeing Marisa Tomei as Spidermans aunt May. She's not supposed to be young and beautiful. She's an old lady. I know this isn't comic book related, but seeing Snow White being played by a Columbian woman is ridiculous and I'm Latina. It literally says in the fairy tale that her skin was white as snow. When I was growing up reading comic books and watching Disney movies I never felt like I needed a Latina character to feel "represented". Also when the actor they choose is a terrible actor it also ruins the experience. Tessa Thompson is so one dimensional and just a terrible actor and in the Little Mermaid Halle Bailey is just so awful to watch. She can sing, but her acting skills are horrendous. She has no depth and no personality, but When Nicholas Cage was played by Samuel Jackson no one complained because he's an amazing actor. It's a shame to see how they're portraying him in Secret Invasion as weak and emotional. For me it goes deeper than simply just race swapping. It's staying true to the original source material and representing the character the way the fans want to see them.
@TheBattleforArcadia

@CharleneOrtizTraining Жыл бұрын
@@TheBattleforArcadia what do you mean when I do it? The Little Mermaid is a Danish tale and Snow White is a German tale so yes choosing a white girl is staying true to the source material. Also, that's not the point. People grew up with Disney's rendition of the story and the origins of a lot of these fairy tales is very dark and wouldn't make a good children's movie. So when you say when I do it that makes zero sense. Disney did not race swap the races from the original stories with their animated movies.

This sounds like you have more of an issue with who was chosen then about the fact that they are African American (at least I hope). But if you are going to make this argument which is fine. then you must have a problem with Tilda Swinton being the ancient one. The ancient one in the comics was an Asian man. Namor was an Atlantean and not an Aztec or Mayan, another example of not following the source material. So hopefully you have a problem with these as well. If not then your standard is not a standard which should go across the board. Now maybe you have an issue with the changes I just mentioned, but you did not say that in your initial statement. Just because you are Latina doesn't mean you cant have certain biases or prejudices (not saying you do) but it seems counterproductive. lastly Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury and not Nicholas Cage.

I have a question: Why is it European mythologies that have to be more diverse when other mythologies don't have to be? There wouldn't have been anything wrong with casting Heimdall and Valkriye with European actors because the characters are based on Norse mythology. It's tied to a specific culture that that has hundreds of years of history and tradition behind it. So it really didn't make sense for actors like Idris Elba and Tessa Thompson to play any Norse characters, let alone gods and warriors, since they don't fit the culture those characters are based on. It's like if James McAvoy played Anasi in American Gods. It wouldn't make sense.

@ComicPower On the point of Gender swapping in conjunction with deities, changing their racial identities does actually make your statement disingenuous and also mispresents the main central premise that you have presented earlier in the video, especially with Disney. What's the point of race-swapping white deities when you know full well that when it comes to other cultures, you wouldn't be as accepting of the race swap. I won't be interested or consider watching an adaptation of a full white cast of the Yoruba pantheon because I'm well aware that those gods have African identities. just like I won't be interested or actually genuinely engaged when they make Chinese gods look like white people or any other racial identities. Just because they aren't real (to you that is) Doesn't mean they don't matter to the cultures from which they originate. Most of those deities are highly intrapersonal considering the gods are highly involved within the environment. The god of air, the wind, the god of lightning and so forth. Also, most polytheistic religions were and are still highly ethnocentric religious practices. Yes, I agree that overrepresentation is definitely an issue but the solution to the problem at hand is not alienation and underrepresentation of pre-established white characters. A better solution since the insistence is on copying and pasting rather than creating original authentic characters, would be pastiching. Instead of a Latino Black Panther, why not just make a white tiger movie, instead of a black Superman why not make a Blue Marvel movie. Presenting the argument of a "clean slate" is arguably a poor argument and a very bad faith argument because the same could be said about pre-establish black characters. @@ComicPower I never presented the bad faith argument of presenting black washing because the argument doesn't work on both accounts. I never disagreed with the false equivalence. What I presented is essentially the double standards of how it's okay if white characters can be changed to white while the same can't apply to black characters, especially when it comes to pre-established white characters. This kind of rhetoric applies to both ends of the poltical spectrum because when few of the left will be okay with blackwashing, they won't be okay when the same is applied to pre-established black characters. Second, I was never against adding new POC characters in fact quite the opposite, what I stated was essentially there is no need to change pre-establish white characters no matter how less popular they're and instead introduce the actual POC characters that are less popular or not known within the mainstream. Hence, I presented the argument of pastiching, which you have clearly skipped over. Like for example a lot of people didn't know Ironman until the movie came in, the same thing can apply to black panther and more interesting characters. Also, you have the impression I'm conservative and I'm not and let's not pretend that the left care about facts or fairness, both the right and left don't care about facts or fairness.

While I wiah they stoped wirh swapping, some actually worked and people still liked. Daredevil movie's Fisk was Michale Clarke Duncan and people love his role. Nick Fury got away with it cause he was from another universe, the Ultimates, and even surpassed thr white version of Fury. 90% of the time you should be original. To flesh out your world and to show creativity. I would always make a non white hero and go from there. As for Valkyrie, she's my favorite Thor movie character right now. I wished Marvel added Blue Marvel (black dude), Luke Cage (black dude), White Tiger (Latino girl), Red Locust (Latina girl), Firebird (Mexican gal). That could have been a cool team by themselves. I don't know why movie makers donr use Comic Vine to help them find original, non white characters that people would have liked.

Very interesting video. I think it's a complicated matter because it really depends on the character: I think that some characters are necessarely linked to a certain "race" or color, for example: Tchalla is an african king and he can't be anything but a white man. On the other hand Thor is a character which is clearly inspired by the Norse god of thunder. The natives of Scandinavia speaking germanic languages whose pantheon included deities such as Odin, Thor, Tyr, Frey were/are light skinned and therefore white. Now ancient populations represented their deities(or at least most of them) as being physically similar to them(greeks is another example). That's why Thor and Odin being white makes sense. Not only white but northern european looking as well. Other characters have become so iconic that it is hard to see them of another color, but when it comes to minor characters I agree with the things you said.

@@grinko1222 I think you are over simplifying a complex subject. Look at it from this perspective. If you named DC comics top 100 most famous characters only 3 of them would be Black in Cyborg, John Stewart and Black Lightning. A couple of things about the video 1. While Zendaya's character isn't explicitly named Mary Jane Watson, she's still has the same initials, and her last name is still Watson. Even if we're to consider her a homage to Mary Jane, it's very unlikely the original MJ will appear in the story because Zendaya's MJ was so well-received. So she's essentially still a race-swapped character. 2. These films should absolutely promote more diverse superheroes from the comics. There are a lot of non-white characters that can be brought into these cinematic universes, where they don't have to race-swap to have diversity. That being said, when it comes to characters whose race doesn't play a huge part in their stories, like with MCU's Heimdall, I think it matters more if they're performed well. It's not something that NEEDS to happen, but I'm not the kind of person who would be mad if it did.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do have to correct something. Zendayas character is Michelle Jones. she has the initials MJ that pay homage to the Mary jane Watson character but she is her own character. I wouldnt call this a race swap. All 3 actors that have played Spidey in live action have all had a different love interest in each installment. marvelcinematicuniverse.fandom.com/wiki/Michelle_Jones As for race swapping over all. My position is it should be retired. I think Marvel and DC have enough POC characters that they have created or old ones (like Nubia at DC) they are now better developing. Stop race switching. Race switched the scooby-do gang. STOP INSULTING peoples races by switching races of original characters. That makes that Company Racist. Stop pitting people agents each other for your company making money from racism. If you want to put a different race in to make a movie then STOP Swapping and use one that already is there or create a new character. It is so dang simple ..If a character started out as white it should stay that way, same thing applies to black characters, how are people supposed to care if theirs characters can't stay consistent, what happens to the actual black characters, do we just forget about them? If they want diversity so badly, just make good stories around pre existing black characters, I mean why race swap when you could just make a new character the way you want. I totally agree with you on this, race swapping is just the laziest way to deal with the problem of non-white roles in film and tv.

If you want to talk about anything you would want to talk about the eternals they kind of had to do a race and gender swap for the eternals movie because if you read the classic eternals comics it has a lot of undertones of racism in it I mean when Thanos is born the eternals get really racist the premise of it is all the eternals are white and our majority white men all the deviants they make look like Monsters and they're all different colors a lot of subliminal racism then when you tag good and evil into the mix the eternals are good and the deviants are bad then went thanos's born he's mixed race and they want to kill him as a baby if you read the eternals comic you'll understand the need for them to have to do a lot of race swapping and everyone should understand why sometimes it's needed to do ray swapping in superhero movies the first thing is the audience now white people we'll never see it from this perspective because they're always represent it but for people of color you want to see yourself represented as a hero on screen to connect yourself to that hero and second is the underlining problem is getting away from the white Messiah complex like for instance that's what Superman represents that's what Batman represents that's what the eternals represents

Forensic recreations of him is a person of color that looks a lot like Saddam Hussein. So did you have a problem with that swaping? And how can the little mermaid be considered a swap? Shes not even human? What right wing grievance website or reddit did you copy and paste that bullsh!t from because i know for 100% sure you didn't write it.

@ComicPower I never mentioned anything about Jesus' eye color, just that He is a white person. A white person is any of the original peoples of Europe, Middle East, and North Africa, so yes, Jesus was white. The Bible is also written in Greek and Aramaic in its original texts, two white languages, and the story of Jesus is literally set in the Roman Empire, which is white. There are no forensice recreations of Jesus because there is no proof that he ever existed outside of the Bible. The Little Mermaid is a white character created by white people in a white country (a white danish man named Hans Christian Anderson created her/her story in Denmark). She is half fish on one end and very obviously half white on the top end, based on the white myth of Atlantis. Part of The Little Mermaid's story is fitting in with the white society at one point where she is magically transformed into a normal white person, this would not work if she is some other race in a story set in racially homogeneous Denmark. Imagine if the races were reversed and a black guy from Sub-Saharan Africa created a story about a half black and half animal creature and a black village. Would you accept a race replacement there? Obviously not.

@@AsadAlam-xx8li wow. You fell asleep in history class. If you think middle eastern people are White you are delusional. Ok. What would happen if a dude named abdul Muhammad tried to join the KKK? @ComicPower The original Middle Eastern people are white, and many still are today. Look at the people of Iran, look at the beauty contestants and bodybuilder contestants and their leaders (the best of their people). They're all white. The US census definition of white is any of the original peoples of Europe, Middle East, and North Africa. The KKK used to have religious qualifiers, however, are you telling me that there are no white Muslims? Lol. The Arabs/Muslims were Allied with Nazi Germany in WW2. Hitler supported Palestina. Persia changed its name from Persia to "Iran" as in "aryan," dubbing itself "land of the aryans" and the name remains to this day. The Roman Empire is expansionist but only over white territories with other white people in them. They did not occupy sub saharan Africa and other nonwhite countries. Regardless, the story of Jesus takes place in the heart of the Roman Empire, in the middle east, where the original peoples are all white. You can look at statues of the jewish king Herod from the time and see that he is white. The disciples were also romans and looked the same per scripture. I will not tailor my comments to accommodate your tiny attention span, you are simply too dimwitted to educate if you sincerely believe that Jesus was black and not white.

I really dont see a problem with it. The thing I dont like is when they change who the character is fundamentally. A hero or villain for that matter in a comic is meant to represent an idea. The color, gender or whatever doesn't change the idea behind the character. Captain America is justice or Spiderman is responsibility etc. But when they swap they have been changing what they stand for. Nick Fury is still doing Nick Fury things. Others are not doing as much.

2:00 “in the 2021st century, that does not look like America” Many of the characters on that list are not American. Your whole argument of “representation” is flawed. According to your logic, we need 20% of the heroes to be gay and lesbian. 5%+ need to be transgender, and 5% need to be disabled, 30% need to be elderly, and 45% need to be overweight for a full representation of America. Ironically that’s actually happening and the films have done terribly because of it.

Should I avoid eating a black hamburger, or vanilla ice cream? Should I never wear black gloves or use white bandages? Should I never use American made products and only use products made in other countries? You know what it comes down to? The human race loves to hate.
