American art history brims with gorgeous landscape paintings, but are they important art? To our modern aesthetic, these paintings can seem awfully pretty, even precious. But to dismiss them would be a grave mistake, says Princeton University art historian Rachael DeLue, one of the leading authorities on the American landscape. She argues that the work of artist George Inness (1825--1894), for example, is full of innovation, not just on painterly grounds but in its engagement of optics, psychology, physiology, and even mathematics. Let DeLue be your guide to seeing the American landscape in an altogether new light.
Rachael Z. DeLue is associate professor in the Art & Archaeology Department at Princeton University. She is also affiliated faculty in Princeton's Center for African American Studies and the American Studies Program. Her area of specialization is the history of American art and visual culture, with particular focus on intersections between art and science and the history of African American art.
This lecture is one of three 2012 programs generously sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art. The Terra Foundation is dedicated to fostering the exploration, understanding, and enjoyment of the visual arts in the United States for national and international audiences.

Thank you for this! She has a lecture on landscapes coming up in DC that I am going to have to miss, so I was excited to find this.

She claims he didn't go out and sketch from nature which is a direct contradiction of his own son, George Inness Jr.'s claim that he in fact spent hours upon hours walking outside with a sketch book and doing small sketches and oil sketches. In fact we have plenty of these small outdoor sketches to view. So this idea that he just created all this stuff out of his imagination and memory couldn't be further from the truth.

This woman makes many statements that are simply chatty conjectures and generally not supported by the vast knowledge we do have about Innes, his times in Perth Amoy, the whole mid-tone approach, etc. I'd expect a more serious effort on this important artist.

good information but, I see to much of her lips moving and not enough of the pictures as she talks about them. That's why I would give the video a B.

Another delusional lecture...worse than Ruskin speaking of Turner...you can tell she never picked up a brush.
